Please find below some of the answers to the questions outlined in the email notice I received from fellow neighbors. 1. Name Adnan Jalil 2. Address (permanent and/or local property address) Full time resident at 4204 West Southridge Road, Nags Head 3. Occupation Federal Lobbyist – Owner of Alpha Strategies, LLC (www.alphagrpdc.com) 4. Educational Background Bachelors of Science - Political Science – Northern Michigan University (NMU) 5. Knowledge and/or experiences with the estuarine system and shoreline including but not limited to kayaking, fishing, kiteboarding, boating, or adjacent landowner. Strong interest in outdoor activities including sea kayaking, paddle boarding, and motor boating. Started sea kayaking on the shores of Lake Superior over 25 years ago. 6. Your interest in the project and why you believe you would be an asset to the Advisory Committee and project (300 word max) As a full time resident with access to the ocean and sound side, I’d like to ensure we preserve the shoreline by ensuring a pristine environment and water quality. More importantly, I’d like to make sure we attract future full time residents and investors that also appreciate a clean environment. Most importantly, we need to find a balance that prioritizes renters and full time residents first and limit the ability for the larger general public to take over any given shoreline area for recreational purposes in our neighborhoods. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss further. Best, Adnan Adnan Jalil 4204 West Southridge Road Nags Head, NC 27959 [email protected] Cell: 202.294.9191 Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: awunderly2 To: Holly White Subject: Town"s Estuarine Shoreline Management Plan Volunteer Date: Friday, July 30, 2021 8:56:00 AM Hi Holly, I hope you’ve been doing well and are making it through the summer ok! We need to catch up! I am submitting the required information to apply as a volunteer for the Town’s Advisory Committee on the Estuarine Shoreline Management Plan. 1. Ann Daisey 2. 334 W. Villa Dunes Dr. 3. Stormwater Technician – County of Currituck 4. B.S. Natural Resource Recreation M.S. Geoscience-Meteorology 5. Professional: Knowledge of weather-related shoreline changes and an understanding of the natural processes of barrier islands. As former seasonal park staff and as a Park Ranger at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, I watched the sound shoreline erode over time and saw a loss of wetland plant species (in addition to invasive plant colonization). I also had the opportunity to see an increase in recreational use over time at the sound access of the park and witness damage to the natural resources. In addition, I worked closely with partners at the NC Coastal Federation, Nature Conservancy, and others to restore the northwest sound shoreline of the park. After the restoration, I witnessed the effects of Hurricane Irene on the established restored marsh and the protection it provided against shoreline erosion. In addition, project partners learned what methods of sill installation worked (or didn’t) in this environment and how to adapt these lessons to other shorelines. As the former Community Conservationist with Dare Soil and Water Conservation District I worked with public and private landowners to apply for cost share funds through the Division of Soil & Water to install marsh sills along their property. As part of the District partnership, I worked closely with the NCCF on multiple sill projects throughout Dare County. Funding from the District supported the marsh sill project installed along Moor Shore Rd. in Kitty Hawk. Not only did I participate in the projects, but I also provided outreach and education to the community and professionals about the benefits of these shoreline protection methods and how they can improve flood resiliency, reduce shoreline erosion and improve water quality. I attended the Restore America’s Estuaries Living Shorelines Tech Transfer Workshop (2019) highlighting project methods, research, and funding regarding shoreline stabilization projects. This workshop highlighted not only methods implemented on the North Carolina coast, but other coastal areas of the eastern U.S. This was valuable in providing information on retrofit projects and opportunities to work with existing shorelines and provided a better understanding that not all marsh sills can be installed on pristine unprotected shorelines. Recreational: As a long-time resident of Nags Head, I enjoy the sound for kayaking, swimming (if not near an outfall) and nature viewing. When doing any of the above, I also pick up any trash that I find. 6. I am interested in this project 1. Because of my personal professional experience on shoreline stabilization – I would provide the Town with hands-on experience of marsh sill installation, provide realistic science-based recommendations and unique stabilization options as presented during the Tech Transfer Workshop 2. I care about the place I call home and support practical science-based approaches to managing a shoreline for longevity in a highly dynamic environment. 3. I look forward to the opportunity to interject thoughtful discussion regarding a developed barrier island that can no longer support some of its natural processes and how this will play a part in the shoreline stabilization decision making process. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you, Ann From: Cola Vaughan <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 3, 2021 11:06 AM To: Holly White; Kate Jones Subject: Estuarine Shoreline Management Advisory Group Attachments: Estuarine Advisory Committee Application.pdf Follow Up Flag: Follow up Flag Status: Flagged Good Morning Holly and Kate, Please find the information you requested below. Your interest in the project and why you believe you would be an asset to the Advisory Committee and project (300 word max) Please see attached document 5.) I’ve been a permanent resident of Nags Head for over 40 years and have always lived on or near the sound shoreline; beginning on Danube Street and Roanoke Way in Old Nags Head Cove. I built my permanent residence at 324 W Soundside Road in 1986. I’ve kayaked, walked, boated and sailed the entire shoreline (yes even the shoreline in long stretches of marsh) and am familiar with the shoreline in many conditions, seasons, wind and weather. I’ve also witnessed more permanent changes, development and the impact from many major storms; Gloria, The Halloween Storm, Storm of the Century and Hurricane Irene just to name a few of the more memorable events. I’ve even kayaked Soundside Road on some of those occasions. 6.) In the course of my professional career I’ve assisted clients in buying or selling dozens of soundfront properties from Duck through Nags Head. This required working with contractors, and engineers as well as permitting and regulatory authorities. I’ve also worked with property owners and their guests for 40+ years in vacation rental management. I’ve participated in a variety of shoreline construction projects in these communities including piers, docks, bulkheads, revetments, terracing, sills and similar wave calming structures. In the mid-eighties I was fortunate to work with Spencer Rogers of the North Carolina Sea Grant Program on some of the earliest marsh enhancement structures or sheetpile sills placed along the Roanoke Sound Shoreline in Nags Head and have monitored the progress of those structures over the past 35 years. Naturally enough I’ve observed a lot of changes. Interest in the natural processes has led me to read the work of Orrin Pilkey, Stan Riggs and Bob Dolan. The fluid and dynamic beauty of the sound shoreline of the Outer Banks is frankly fascinating. I’ve been fortunate to spend so much time exploring it. I recognize the need for inclusion and the goal of comity among the various stakeholders of our sound shoreline in the Nags Head community. A project of this scope is going to be quite a challenge and I believe my experience and willingness to patiently and thoroughly consider the issues will be helpful to this advisory committee. Heart rate response and energy cost of stand up paddleboarding. MS in Clinical Exercise Physiology, December 2016, 31 pp. (J. Porcari) Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) began in Hawaii as a way to view island scenery and as a way for photographers to get better picture angles of st11fers. The purpose of this study was to determine the heart rate (HR) response and energy expenditure of SUP. Sixteen recreational paddleboarders completed a total of three trials at Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) levels of II, 13, and 15. It was found that HR was between 67% and 89% of age-predicted maximal HR and energy expenditure was between 9.00 and 13.9 kcal per minute, depending on the RPE level of the paddleboarder. The results indicate that SUP meets American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for positively affecting body composition and improving cardiorespiratory endurance.
