Kobo Aura One Kobo Aura One Step 1: Set up an OverDrive account Open the browser on your computer, and go to https://www.overdrive.com/account/sign-up At the section that says “Enter Your Details”, type in your name and your email address, and create a password in the “Set a Password” field Click on “Sign Up” You will see a notification at the top of the page that your account must be validated. An email will be sent to the address you used to sign up, containing a link for you to click on to validate your account. Once you have clicked on the link in your email, you will see a message at the top of the page that says “Congratulations, your account has been verified”. If you have favourite genres, you may select them using the check boxes Click on Save. You will see a message at the top of the page saying “Your account settings have been updated” Step 2: Install Adobe Digital Editions on your PC Go to http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions.html Choose your country and language Click “Download” Under “Adobe Digital Editions 4.5.2 Installers”, choose the download that matches the operating system on your computer, and click on the link You will see a message “You have chosen to open ADE_4.5.2_Installer.exe… Would you like to save this file?” Click on “Save File” Once the file has finished downloading, run it to install the software If you are prompted instead to “Run” or “Save” the file, choose “Run”. After the download completes, and the installer starts, click on the check box: “I agree to accept the terms in the Licence Agreement” and click “Next” Choose the options you want from the next screen and click “Next” again. On the Destination Folder dialogue box, choose a location and click on “Install” When you first run Adobe Digital Editions, you’ll be asked to authorize your computer Choose “Authorize Computer”. In the drop down menu next to “Ebook Vendor”, scroll down and select “OverDrive”. Next to “Vendor Login ID”, enter the email address you used to create your OverDrive account, then enter your password in the field next to “Vendor Password”. Once the installation is finished, Adobe Digital Editions will open in the “Library View” You can now download e-books to your computer and transfer them to your Kobo Step 3: Log in to Download Library by OverDrive Open the browser on your computer, and go to http://www.kpl.org Click “Books and More”, then select “e-Books and e-Audiobooks” Scroll down the page to “Search for e-Books” and click on that link to go to the Download Library site On the Download Library site, click on the “Sign In” link in the top right-hand corner of the screen Choose your library from the list, enter your library card number and click on “Sign in” Step 4: Find books Click on the Search icon Do a basic search by entering keywords in the search field, or click on Advanced search In the Advanced search, you can: Choose a subject; limit to only e-books under the Formats menu; select titles that are available now under the Availability menu Click on Subjects to select a subject to browse Putting holds on e-books E-books might already be signed out o If they are signed out, the bar on the top of the cover image will say “Wait List” o You can put a hold on e-books that are already signed out by clicking on “Place a Hold” o Enter your email address and you will receive a message when the e-book is available Step 5: Checking out e-books E-books that are available to borrow will have a green bar above the book cover that says “Available” When you have found a title you want to check out, click on “Borrow” o The e-book will be signed out automatically o There are never any late fees o The e-book is returned to the library automatically Step 6: Downloading e-books to your computer Once you have checked an e-book out, you will download it to your computer and then transfer it to your Kobo Go to your Account in Download Library and select “Loans” to see e-books you’ve checked out Click on the Download button You may see a Device Compatibility Notice, depending on what operating system you are using; ensure that you have the appropriate software installed, then click on “Confirm” You may see a message that prompts you to open the file with Adobe Digital Editions Select “Open” If this is the first time you have downloaded a book to the Adobe Digital Editions software, you will be prompted to authorize the software as outlined in Step 2 above The title will automatically open in the Adobe Digital Editions software Sometimes, you might need to tell your computer to open OverDrive e-book files (.acsm files) in Adobe Digital Editions Go to: http://bit.ly/1F6BkqC if you need to do this If you are using the Chrome browser: The Chrome browser handles downloaded files differently from other browsers Once you choose to download the e-book, the link to the downloaded file will appear at the bottom left corner of your screen Click on the small drop-down arrow next to the box where your downloaded file appears Choose “Open” from the list of options The file will open in the Adobe Digital Editions software Step 7: Transfer e-books to your Kobo using Adobe Digital Editions The ADE software assumes you want to read your book once you download it, so the view that you see at first is the “Reading view”. Click on “Library” in the upper left hand corner of the ADE software to see the “Library view” Titles you have downloaded are displayed on the right-hand side of the screen If you have a lot of titles, and you want to find only things you have checked out from the library, you can click on the “Borrowed Items” bookshelf on the left-hand side of the screen to see just your library books With the Adobe Digital Editions software open, connect your Kobo to your computer with the USB cable A message will appear on your Kobo, saying that a computer has been detected Touch “Connect” on the Kobo display screen Your Kobo will display the message “Connected and Charging” It may take a moment for Adobe Digital Editions to recognize your Kobo Once it is recognized, a section called “Devices” will appear on the left-hand side of the screen Your Kobo will be listed there as a device If you are using a PC, the e-reader should appear if Adobe Digital Editions is already open Depending on your e-reader, you may need to close Adobe Digital Editions, plug in your e-reader, and then re-open Adobe Digital Editions You may need to restart your computer in order for the e-reader to be recognized by your computer On a Mac, close Adobe Digital Editions before plugging in your Kobo Plug in your Kobo, then open Adobe Digital Editions The e-reader should be recognized by your computer In Adobe Digital Editions, right-click on the book jacket of the title you want to transfer to your e-reader Click on “Copy to Computer/Device” and choose your Kobo from the device list The book will be transferred to the Kobo Safely Remove Hardware before you unplug the Kobo On a PC, click the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon on the lower right-hand side of your screen Choose “Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device” The computer may recognize your device, and the message may read: “Remove Kobo e-Reader” When you see the message “Safe to Remove Hardware”, unplug your e-reader The e-reader will then display a message that it is “Processing new content” On a Mac, unmount/eject the e-reader using the Finder before unplugging Detach the e-reader from your computer. When your e-books expire When the book reaches the due date, it expires To delete expired books from your Kobo, press the Library button Select “Books” to see a list of books on your Kobo Touch the menu icon – 4 horizontal lines on the right Touch “Delete” and the book will be deleted from your Kobo If a title has expired, you will need to delete it from your Kobo and from the ADE software to prevent it from taking up space Returning an e-book early In the Adobe Digital Editions software on your computer, click on Library Right-click on the book cover, and click on “Return Borrowed Item” This will return the book to the library and delete it from your computer Using the Kobo Aura’s Built-in Wireless Search From the home screen, touch the “More” icon at the top of the screen – this looks like 3 dots Touch WiFi – it may be listed as disabled. If it is, touch the button next to WiFi to enable The Aura will scan for available WiFi networks and will list them If you are using a KPL location, choose the KPL WiFi network listed by touching it. The Aura will connect to the network To search for library e-books, touch the “More” icon, then touch “Settings”, then touch “OverDrive” Touch “Get Started” The Aura will let you know that you need a WiFi connection, an OverDrive account, and a library card If you don’t have an OverDrive account, touch “Create Account” and follow the prompts If you have an OverDrive account, touch “Sign in to OverDrive” Search for Kitchener Public Library and select Kitchener Public Library (downloadLibrary) You can sign in using your library card, your OverDrive account, or Facebook If you sign in with an OverDrive account, you may be prompted to “Add a library card” Once you’re logged in, the Kobo + OverDrive screen will appear where you can search for library e- books Touch “Browse” or “Search”.

Step 1: If you are using your Kobo for the first time, follow the setup instructions that came with your Kobo and create your Kobo account. Step 2: Download Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to your computer and authorize with an Adobe ID. To download Adobe Digital Editions, visit https://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital- editions/download.html and click on the link that matches your operating system. After Adobe Digital Editions installs, click on Help and select Authorize Computer. Enter either an existing Adobe ID or follow the instructions to create a new one. Step 3: Connect your Kobo to your computer and turn it on. It should appear under Devices in Adobe Digital Editions. Click the gear icon above it and select Authorize Device.
