Go Green with Organic Fruits & Vegetables Karen Wilder, RD

We are in the peak of summer already, and the farmer’s markets are brimming with delicious, fresh produce right now. Most people love good, home-grown or locally farmed fruits and veggies, but does it have to be organic? What does that label mean?

Organic fruit and vegetable production is regulated in the US by the USDA which certifies that produce was grown on soil that has had no prohibited substances applied for three years prior to harvest. These substances are typically synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, sewage sludge, or irradiation. Also, the soil quality has been managed by natural crop rotation and cover crops and no genetically modified plants are grown.

Organic farming is expensive and time consuming for farmers, hence the typically higher prices of organic produce, but there are many benefits. Organic farming is good for the environment and our bodies as it promotes better quality soil, cleaner water, fewer toxins leaching into the produce, and less carbon emissions into the air. Certification also requires that farmers use sustainable business practices and sets a higher standard for the treatment of their employees.

One myth about organic produce is that it is more nutritious than conventional produce. While it is probably healthier because it is free from things like synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, the actual nutrition content, meaning the amount of vitamins and minerals, is not significantly different. There is a lot of research being done to determine the health benefits of organic produce.

If you decide to make the switch, always look for this USDA label when you are shopping for organic foods. If you frequent the farmer’s market, ask your farmer what organic practices they use. The more we support organic farming, the more accessible it will become for everyone.
