Quality research is a priority to our College and the University. In addition to research efforts of individuals and groups, the College has research entities that connect the efforts of several groups of various disciplines. Cooperation and joint work in scientific research is an important factor in improving the quality of scientific research and its consequential benefits. In comparison with publication results of previous years, number & percentage of ISI publications by our faculty members in quality journals has gone up this year. I am very optimistic that it will further accelerate in days to come and I do hope more members of the college will get involved in high quality works whose cutting edge research and innovation will be relevant to the needs of industry & society. It is a great honor to congratulate the College faculty & staff members for their achievements of publishing research works in ISI journals of high repute, and obtaining National and International patents for their innovatiove work. Prof. Waleed M. Zahid Dean, College of Engineering 1 1- Summary Details mentioned in this booklet reflects the contribution of faculty members and research entities of the College of Engineering (CoE) towards publication of high quality ISI research papers in peer reviewed journals and acquired international patents for their innovative research works in the year of 2019. It also provides comparison of the college research performance with international benchmarks. Five hundred and fifteen (515) research papers were published in 2019 by the faculty members of CoE in peer-reviewed ISI journals of high reputation. The average ISI research paper published per faculty member in the college departments was in the range from 0.98 to 4.5. Twenty three percent (23%) of the college ISI papers were published by faculty members of the Chemical Engineering department. Members of the Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, Civil Engineering and Petroleum Engineering departments published 21%, 16%, 13%, 11% and 2% of the total, respectively. The college research entities contributed about 14% of the total ISI publications. Achievements of faculty members of the Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department are higher than the US benchmark by 108%, 139%, 39% and 316%, respectively. A total of 23 Patents were granted to faculty members of the CoE in 2019. Out of these 23 patents, 11 US patents were granted to faculty members of the Electrical, 8 Patents were granted to Civil Engineering department (4 US & 4 Local), and 2 US patents were granted to faculty members of Mechanical Engineering. One US patent was granted to faculty members from Industrial Engineering, and another one to Chemical Engineering faulty members. 2 2- ISI Publication 2-1 ISI Publication for the Year 2019 515 ISI-papers were published by the college of engineering in 2019. Figure-1 below shows the percent contribution of various academic departments and research entities in the publication of ISI journals. 23% of papers were published by faculty members of the Chemical Engineering department. Members of the Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical and Civil Engineering departments published 21%, 16%, 13% and 11% of the total, respectively, and that of the Petroleum Engineering was 2%. The College research entities contributed about 14% of the total publication. Publications per facuty for each department is presented in Figure-2. It can be seen that for some of our Engineering departments, the achievements of faculty members are more than the US Benchmark of publication in ISI journals in respective disciplines. In comparison to the US Benchmark, achievements by faculty members of the Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department are higher by 108%, 139%, 39% and 316% respectively. However, achievements of Civil & Petroleum Engineering departments are behind the US Benchmark. Figure-3, Figure-4 and Figure-5, depict the previous results pictorially, and Figure 6-presents the quality of ISI papers published in 2019 as per JCR quartile rankings (JCR: Journal Citation Report). 4 Table 1: ISI-Papers per Faculty Member of CoE-KSU Versus US Benchmark for the Year 2019 CoE-KSU U.S. BM * Comparison with U.S. BM Difference Number Number ISI paper ISI paper Engineering KSU/US with of ISI of /Faculty- /Faculty- Department Benchmark US Papers Faculty year year Benchmark Chemical 117 26 4.50 2.16 2.08 108% Electrical 111 43 2.58 1.08 2.39 139% Mechanical 67 37 1.81 1.3 1.39 39% Civil 55 56 0.98 1 0.98 -2% Industrial 82 27 3.04 0.73 4.16 316% Petroleum 12 10 1.20 2.16 0.56 -44% *U.S. Benchmark: Average for top 30 US Universities Figure 3: Number of ISI-Papers Published by Faculty Members of every Department for the Year 2019 5 Figure 4: Ratio of “CoE ISI-Papers per Faculty Member” to “US Benchmark ISI Papers per Faculty Member” for the Year 2019 Figure 5: ISI-Papers per Faculty Member of CoE-KSU Versus US Benchmark for the Year 2019 6 Figure 6: Quality of ISI-Papers (Q-percentage) of various CoE Departments in 2019 2-3 CoE-ISI Publication for the Years 2014-2019 Table-2 given below shows the numbers of ISI research papers published by faculty members of various departments and research entities of CoE in the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Five hundred and fifteen papers were published in 2019. It is clear that there is a continuous improvement in the number of ISI papers per faculty member in the last four years lead by the Chemical Engineering department and followed by the Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Industrial and Petroleum Engineering department. Figure-7 below depicts these results. 7 Table 2 Summary of Published ISI-Papers of CoE Departments and Research Entities during the Years 2014-2019 Number of Published ISI Research Papers 2019 to 2018 percentage change (%) Department 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 Chemical Engineering 98 100 125 90 79 117 48 Electrical Engineering 73 75 62 64 86 111 29 Mechanical Engineering 55 73 70 38 53 67 26 Civil Engineering 47 48 63 40 35 55 57 Industrial Engineering 15 29 38 31 52 82 58 Petroleum & Nat.
