This is a time of the year when we are particularly reminded to remember. At All Saints and All Souls at the beginning of the month of November we remember all the great heroes and heroines of the faith. Those whose names are well known and those who are less familiar. Also our loved ones who now rejoice in the presence of our Heavenly Father. On Remembrance Sunday we give thanks for all those who have laid down their lives in war in the cause of justice and freedom. And we also “remember, remember the 5th of November, gun-powder treason and plot.”

The Bible has lots to say about remembering, which is hardly surprising when we recall how forgetful we are. The word “remember” comes 166 times in the Bible and a further 75 times in various other forms.

For example, the preacher of the book of Ecclesiastes counsels us to:

“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them"” (12:1)

The Bible talks about God remembering and not remembering too:

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.” (Psalm 103:13-14)

3 We’re repeatedly told that God remembers his covenant, the agreement he has made with his people. God makes promises and he keeps them. He alone is utterly trustworthy and reliable.

Yet God also promises:

“I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more” (Hebrews 8:12)

Not, of course, that God is absent minded, as we so often are. Rather, God promises not to call to mind the sins of believers. Yes, he knows all about them, but he doesn’t relate to us on the basis of them. God forgives and “forgets”. He doesn’t hold our sins against us if we cast ourselves on his mercy. That’s worth remembering.

In November 1920, the body of an unknown soldier was returned to London and reburied at Westminster Abbey. The body had been selected anonymously from the main British battle areas on the Western Front.

4 ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH RENDHAM We are so pleased at the appointment of the Rev Martin Percival as Priest in Charge of our Benefice, after a vacancy of sixteen months. The Bishop of and the , with the Rural Dean, conducted his Service of Licensing, which took place at St Mary’s Church, Dennington on the evening of Tuesday 4 September. The large congregation, which included parish representatives, were impressed by the colourful procession of robed and mitred clergy and churchwardens with their staffs of office, and the elders of the benefice, who all took part in the ceremony. After the service we adjourned to Dennington Village Hall to celebrate, raise a toast to Martin’s health and enjoy the refreshments. We would like to thank Roger Wilson and Paul Mangan for all the work they have done in the churchyard, clearing away dead branches and fallen wood, as a result of which it looks a great deal tidier. Three riders from Rendham took part in the SHCT Bike Ride on 8 September and 39 were recorded at the church. Our riders managed to visit over 100 churches in all, and the weather was better than the forecast. Thanks to all those who took part and to those who gave up their time to record the event. Our Remembrance Day Service will be at 10.55 am on Sunday 11 November and will be led by an Elder. We will be holding our Christmas Market in Rendham Village Hall on Saturday 1st December from 10 am to 12.30 pm with coffee and homemade mince pies * Christmas cards, decorations * cakes, mince pies, preserves, presents, stocking fillers * Tombola, Raffle, Lucky Draw. All proceeds in aid of St Michael’s Church.

CRANSFORD NEWS

After 35 years of living in Cransford, Glenda Thirkell has left us to live nearer her daughter in Sussex. A difficult but wise decision in view of advancing years. During all the years we knew her, both she and David were stalwart supporters of St Peter's serving as Elder and Churchwarden respectively, and never missing a service. We all miss her, and wish her well in her new life. We were all much heartened by the Licensing Service of Martin our new Priest in Charge. Although of course he knows us from his serving the Benefice for the last eighteen months, we must all give him every support in his work in the years to come, not only in conducting services, but in pastoral care and looking after the spiritual life of the six parishes. With Linda at his side, the future for the Benefice looks rosy. On the 8th September the annual sponsored Bike Ride took place. The weather was kind, and many of us took to the lanes around our parishes which are well suited to cycling. It is too soon to say how we fared, but I will give information as it becomes available usually in December. Many thanks to all who rode or walked, manned the churches or sponsored so generously. Any of our parishes who are contemplating expenditure on repairs or maintenance should not hesitate to apply to the Trust for grants. Their support of Cransford's roof appeal last year was prompt and generous. The season of ploughing and drilling is upon us again, and soon the harvest hymns will be filling the naves. “Thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.” Patrick
