My name is Dave Ziemer, newly elected as President of CGSNA. I want to begin by sincerely thanking Rich for his years of faithful service as our President. I know I have some big shoes to fill, but with people like Rich Gunn, Charlie Kehm, Chuck Franz, Alise Erickson, Jerred Gunn and Anne Gunn as part of the team, I hope to serve you well. 2016 was an interesting year, filled with many wonderful things. We saw Iain Gunn take his place as our Chief. There were many well attended festivals & games across North America where Gunns could share our history, and bring some wandering Gunns back into the fold. We had a great AGM where 45 of our members feasted, toasted and enjoyed the all that the Chicago games had to offer. However, there were many challenges as well. Last year saw a continuation of the of the decline of new memberships, as well as renewals. This is not peculiar to Clan Gunn; all the clans are suffering with the same lack of interest. We are all competing with a multitude of competitors for the attention of people with Scottish heritage. The average age of members involved in their clans’ societies is getting older every year. Young people of Scottish lineage don’t seem interested any more. I know it seems like I’m being a little negative right out of the box, but there is always a great deal of hope! For instance, now that you can renew or apply for Gunn membership on our website, it’s easier than ever to join and more people are doing so! We can all work to reverse this trend if we put our heads together. I think we must show people who take the time to visit us that we are more than just a cultural organization, we are a FAMILY! I am not saying that we think we are the former, but from the comments I hear from visitors to our display, that impression surely exists. One of the things I’ve noticed is that some clans sit & socialize with themselves as visitors walk by their booths without being acknowledged. If they would only get up and talk with the folks, they might kindle some interest in our collective cause. Engagement is key! I want to hear from all our members. Everybody has talents & Ideas that need to be shared. I’d love to see pictures, & hear stories from all the great things we do. And, most of all if any of you have ideas that will help attract and keep members, let us know. No idea is unimportant, we all share in this responsibility! Clan Gunn is going to bigger than ever with all the great members of our family doing all the awesome things that we do. I am so glad to be a part of future of Gunn! Slàinte mhòr agad! Investiture attendees Page 5 The Gunn Salute Christian G Malcolm Kehm, USMC Memorial Scholarship This time of the year always touches our souls & hearts as we pen the 8th Annual Christian G Malcolm Kehm, USMC Memorial Scholarship article for the GUNN SALUTE. As we approach this year of presenting piping and drumming Scholarships at the famed North American Academy of Piping and Drumming in the North Carolina Highlands, the Scholarship Committee wants to thank all those donating including Rich Gunn, Past President of North American Commissioner of Clan Gunn Society of North America & the Clan McCallum - Malcolm Society of North America along with many other members of both societies and other clans. As a result of this generosity the Scholarship Committee awarded full week piping scholarships to: Sgt. Chris Jones Jacksonville Police Department and USMC an a Clan McCallum-Malcolm member & Sgt. Tim Nazzaro Orange County Sheriffs Department and a Clan Gunn Member & Christopher Hyppolite a 15 year old Palm Beach Pipes & Drums student piper & Scotland Boland a 17 year old First Coast Highlanders beginning piper & Steve Attwood a Rosie O'Grady's Highlanders student piper, a Senior Teacher at Winter Park, a former US Navy Quartermaster and a member of Clan MacLeod. This year the scholarship committee is working hard to increase the number of winners and WE NEED YOUR HELP AND DONATIONS. Please consider donating and helping our brothers and sisters attend the North American Academy of Piping and Drumming to experience some of the very best instructors in the world insuring that "Glorious Music" we all love so much. As our son Chris often said "the Academy is truly a magical place". These items can be ordered through our web site using PayPal or by mail. This activity does not involve a lot of time. You would be responsible for checking for electronic orders forwarded by the Treasurer or sent by US Mail, preparing an invoice and forwarding the invoice that to Rich Gunn, who handles the storage and shipment of merchandise. Normal orders would be less than a few per week, on average. Further information regarding the Store can be had by contacting Rich Gunn at [email protected]. Anyone interested should contact President Dave Ziemer at [email protected]. President Ziemer is also interested in hearing from any member interested in volunteering in any capacity for the Society. When my father was alive, he and my mother enjoyed going to the Scottish Games in Savannah, GA. One year they went to Scotland and, while there, ordered kilts made of ancient Gunn, which were sent home to them when ready.

We just concluded another AWSOME AGM in Florida at the Central Highland Games. It was a wee bit cold, but we hearty Scots & our Viking constitution (along with a dram or two) hardly noticed! The tent was always busy, with lots of visitors, family & those who were there to become a part of our wonderful Clan. We signed 18 new or renewing Gunns. We also raised $1755.00 in the raffle for the Clan Gunn & Clan MacCallum - Malcolm Society Piping Scholarship! A great job by all! I would especially like to thank Howard H. Curran, Charlie & Alexie Kehm, Chuck & Jän Franz and Steve & Sandy Wilson. Also, thanks are in order to James Edward Smith. He not only was he helping host the tent, James represented Gunn in the heavy athletics as a competitor! We were also thankful to have our Clan’s Chaplain, Becky Robbins-Penniman at the Games. She gave the invocation for the Games, a very special honor for her & Clan Gunn, and blessed our meeting as well.

Kildonan - named after St. Donan who established his monastery at Suisgill; in the middle of the glen was the home of the McHamish Gunns from the 15th century up to the Clearances in 1819. The original church of Kildonan probably dated from about 1100 and contained the mortuary chapel of the Gunn chiefs at its western end. This was replaced by the present church built in 1788. Down the river from the church is Killearnan the seat of the McHamish Gunns for over 200 years until it was destroyed bv fire in 1690. Nothing remains of the original house. Kinbrace - at the top of Kildonan is said to have been named after the Crowner’s brooch.

    Who Fought On What Side At Culloden Most people will tell you The Battle of Culloden was fought by the Scottish clans on the side of Prince Charlie and the British army with the Duke of Cumberland on the other side, Scot’s against the English. This is not quite right. You had clans on both sides, and you had clans that did not come out for either side. Some clans such as Clan Gordon and Clan Grant were represented on both sides. In the case of Clan Gordon, the chief of Clan Gordon took the side of the English but his brother Lord Lewis Gordon with many from Clan Gordon joined the Jacobite side. Clan Grant of Glenmorriston came out to fight on the Jacobite side, while Clan Grant of Freuchie opposed them on the English side. Clan Rose tried to remain neutral, on 14 April 1746 Hugh Rose of Kilravock, chief of Clan Rose entertained Bonnie Price Charlie. On 15 April Hugh Rose entertained the Duke of Cumberland. Can’t get more diplomatic than that. The chief of Clan MacQuarrie took no side but did not stop his clansmen from doing so. This also happened with a lot of small clan groups. So the question is what clan was on what side? The following list is compiled from present day sources. Some clans may not be listed, if your clan is not listed, take the time and find out which side they may have been on. Clan Gunn Society of New Zealand Inc Commander Iain Gunn of Banniskirk On the 25th September 2015 Lord Lyon Morrow issued the following interlocutor in the Petition of Iain Alexander Gunn of Banniskirk Chief of the Clan Gunn of date 24 July 2015: “Edinburgh, 25 September 2015. The Lord Lyon King of Arms, having considered the foregoing petition, Recognizes the Petitioner as Representer of the House and Family of Gunn, Chief of the Clan Gunn, and that he is entitled to the additaments of Chief to his Ensigns Armorial, the form of such Ensigns Armorial to be determined by His Lordship at a later date.” This historic ruling therefore establishes a fully recognized Chief of Clan Gunn for the first time since 1785 – a truly historic event.     Clan Gunn Origins (and why we are the Viking Scots) Taken from Clan Gunn Society of North America, website: Clan Gunn claims descent from the Norse Jarls or Earls of Orkney and from the ancient Celtic Pictish Mormaers of Caithness through Ragnhild, daughter of Moddan in Dale, son of Moddan, Mormaer (High Steward) of Caithness, who was killed in 1040, and granddaughter of Saint Rognvald, Jarl of Orkney, who married Gunni, the reputed name-father of the Clan. Gunni was himself a grandson of Sweyn Asleif's-son, (thereby Sweyn Asleifsson) the 'Ultimate Viking' and hero of the Orkneyinga Saga. Sweyn Asleif's-son had his long hall on the island of Gairsay, off the east coast of the Mainland of Orkney and lands in Caithness at Freswick, a few miles south of Duncansbay. The principal Gunn lands were, however, acquired through Ragnhild, who inherited great estates in Caithness and Sutherland on the death of her brother, Harold Ungi, Jarl in Orkney and Earl of Caithness in 1198. These were inherited by Snaekoll (White head) Gunni's-son the second chief of the Clan. His rights to the Norse Earldom were, however, forfeited as he had murdered John, the then Jarl in Orkney, over a land claim dispute arising from their mutual descent from the ancient Jarls of Orkney. Thus from the middle of the 13th century the Gunns were essentially a Caithness family. At this time Clan Gunn were at the height of their power. They appeared to possess virtually the whole of Caithness, which was then passing from the influence of the Norse Earldom to that of the King of Scots.

The surname appears to have originated independently in many different areas, and thus not all Wilsons today are related to each other. Five of the principal family lines bearing the name of Wilson in Britain today stem from (1) the ancient Irish, (2) Wolf of Denmark via clan Inness, (3) William of clan Gunn, (4) William de Waldershelf, and (5) an unknown Norman invader named Wilson. Spelling variants include Wilson, Willson, Willsonne, Wilsone, Wulson, Wilsoun, Wolsoun, Wolfson, Wilfson, Wylsone and others, some versions being older than others but the differences often meaning relatively little, since one man might spell his own name in more than one way at different times in his life. Our Wilson line stems from the ancient Irish clans, as proven by DNA analysis (see below). However, before we get to the Irish Wilsons, let’s review all of what is currently known about the various other independent and mutually unrelated Wilson families in Great Britain: The Norse Willsons of Scotland Many of the English Wilsons are of Norman ancestry whereas some of the Scottish Willson's are mostly of Irish or Picto-Norse descent and represent either a branch (“sept”) of the clan Gunn in Caithness or the much older House of Inness in Banffshire. The clan Gunn Willson's are descended from George Gunn “the Crowner,” through his son William—hence “Will's son”—who lived in the late 1400’s.
