Curiosity, mixed with a little intelligence and bravery, is what gets our questions answered and it’s what makes us smarter and bolder in the end. It fuels our need for learning. A hunger for answers about a host of topics was also what fueled the revival of The Sri Chakra magazine. It started with Vijitha and I sitting around in the temple yajnashala on a Saturday night, throwing questions back and forth at each other that we were too embarrassed to bother Aiya with. These were not only questions about spirituality, but also how to reconcile our spirituality with the pressures and culture of living in the West. Just how damaging (if at all) are egg-mixed foods to one’s body? If gold is so important for Hindus, why is a state of detachment from material objects so valued? If social drinking is a no-no, what is the deal with the viseshargyam in Sri Chakra puja? (I hear Bagalamukhi puja requires a straight shot of brandy!) Maybe it was the late hour that contributed to the philosophical turn of the conversation, but we knew others in the temple would be just as curious as we were about the answers to these questions.

    Kollur Kollur is one of the seven Mukti Sthalams of Parasurama Kshetras situated in Karnataka. The other holy centres are Udupi, Subramanya, Kumbasi, Kodeshwara, Sankaranarayana and Gokarna. The sacred shrine of Devi Mookambika is at the foot of a hill known as Kudashatri. River Sowparnika, originating in the hill, flows by the side of the temple. Yogis and rishis have performed penance on this holy soil. Skanda Purana speaks about the glory of this Maha Aranyapuram, where a sage by name Kola did penance. Devi Adi Shakti, who vanquished demon Mookasura, was extolled by the Devas as Mookambika. Devi Shakti appeared before Sri Adi Sankara too in this Kudashatri hills. The Swayambu Lingam with a golden rekha in the middle is worshipped as Siva-Shakti Swaroopa. The devout believe that all the three Shaktis - Mahakali, Mahasaraswathi and Mahalakshmi - are enshrined in this sacred idol of Mookambika. The Panchaloha idol of the Devi was installed by Sri Adi Sankara himself. He prescribed the various rituals and puja rites for worship and installed Sri Chakra before the Goddess. The Devi is in Padmasana posture holding Shanku and Chakra, and is showing Abhaya Varada Mudra. The images of Kali and Saraswathi are enshrined near Mookambika. 1 / 5 Kollur The Sankara Simhasanam, a stone peetam in the shrine, is revered highly by devotees. Sri Adi Sankara used this place for meditation. Devotees meditate here and seek the Guru's blessings. An Anjaneya idol installed by Sri Vadi Raja, Lord Veerabhadra, Naga and Subramanya have separate shrines. A marble idol of Vinayaka with ten hands is enshrined on the southern prakara.

[email protected] Abstract After a brief glimpse into the „mysteries‟ and legends associated with the deity of Tirumala, this article focuses on Venkateshwara, the Lord of this sacred site, understanding Him to be the Kali Yuga Varada, or the source of solace and salvation in the present era of Kali. Looking further, one finds within the deity, aspects of the six major deities of the Shanmata tradition, as well as the Guru. This is visualized through the concept of Spiritual Altitude, depicted as the „spiritual hill‟ of Govindaadri. This leads to the Lord being called as “Eka-Moorthy”, containing all divinity within Himself. As an extension to that thought, the article then discusses on the 108 sacred sites of Shanmata, called the Kshetra-Ashtottara, and how one can, merely contemplating upon Venkateshwara, perform a virtual „Kshetraadanam‟ to these sites. This visualization is termed “Eka Kshetra-Ashtottara Moorthy” (EKAM). Reconciling this concept with Govindaadri using the Panchaayatana concept leads to yet another visualization, termed “Pancha-EKAM”. In summary, this article elaborates upon a series of inquiries, thoughts and revelations to the author, regarding the nature of the Lord Venkateshwara, in various levels of Spiritual Altitudes, which are essentially measures of Spiritual Inclusivity. The most important observation and value- add from these discussions is that Tirumala of Venkateshwara is indeed the most sacred Kshetra of Baalaa Tripurasundari, who is the very special form of the Universal Mother Ambika, manifest with the core intention of “Kali Yuga Varadha”.

    Ernakulam The Saivite shrine of Ernakulathappan is popular. The Lingam is said to have been worshipped by Arjuna. Ayyappankavu, Devi, Krishna and Subramanya shrines are other important temples around. Aluva, formerly Alwaye (21 km from Ernakulam): Sivaratri is celebrated on the banks of river Periyar for the Lingam on the sandbed. Sri Poornathrayeesa temple, Tripunithura: Lord Krishna, seated on Adi Sesha, is said to have been installed by Arjuna. A strange feature is that the panchaloha idol does not appear to touch the ground. Offering of gingelly oil to the lamp is considered important. Chottanikkara Rajarajeshwari temple (8 km from Tripunithura and 20 km from Ernakulam): The Goddess is worshipped as Saraswathi in the morning, clothed in white, as Bhadrakali at noon with crimson red cloth and as Durga in the evening in bright blue vastra. The Devi is worshipped along with Lord Vishnu. Together They are known as Lakshminarayana. The constant chantings of Amme Narayana, Devi Narayana and Lakshmi Narayana rent the air around the shrine. The mentally ill and those possessed by evil spirits are brought here and they get cured. Noon prayers are very popular, particularly on Tuesdays and Fridays. The place was orginally a cowshed, where the Devi appeared in the form of a cow to a tribal hunter. Later, the idols of Vishnu and Devi were discovered end consecrated in a temple. 1 / 3 Ernakulam Kizhakavu is another shrine of Bhadrakali opposite to the main shrine. The possessed are brought here after some rituals and nails are driven into a jackfruit tree. Kuruthi, a lime and turmeric-mixed water, is offered to the deity to ward off evil spirits.
