BY COLIN THORSEN

The thought of receiving a beer from legendary event organiser Robin Judkins helped inspire Te Awamutu’s Mike Lamb to com- plete his maiden Coast to Coast endurance race. Finishing the gruelling two- day event was a feat in itself, but to place 59th overall out of 300 (well inside the top 25 per cent) was a truly remarkable accomplishment by the Puahue farmer. The 48-year-old, better known for his equestrian exploits, had not ridden a bike for over 20 years and had never kayaked prior to commencing his nine months training for the event. Lamb covered the 3km run, 55km ride, 33km mountain run, 15km ride, 67km paddle and 70km ride starting at Kumara Beach and finishing at Sumner Beach in 15 hours 30 minutes.
