Lay CREATE BAG: pattern on WRONG side of fabric 1. Cut 4 - 10” pieces of bias tape. 2. Read “Applying Bias Tape” on page 8. Starting at top corner, encase raw edge of each B1 and B2 panels in fold of bias tape. Topstitch open edge of bias closed using a 1/8” seam allowance or stitch in the ditch. 3. Layer B1 RIGHT side up on RIGHT side of A. Align left bottom corners and left side edges. Sew, overlapping seam on bias tape from step #2. 4. Layer B2 RIGHT side up on RIGHT side of A. Align right bottom corners and right side edges. Sew, overlapping seam on bias tape from step #2. 5. Repeat with steps #3 and #4 with the second set of B1, B2 & A. 6. Lay zipper face down on RIGHT side of A. Align long, top edges. Sew top edge 1/8” from zipper teeth using a zipper foot. PREPARE ZIPPER: 7. Lay C RIGHT side down on RIGHT side 1. Measure in and mark ½” from zipper stop of A; sandwiching zipper between A & C. Align on both ends of zipper tape. Trim off long, top edges. Sew using a ¼” seam allowance. excess tape; so overall measurement is C 10”. 2. Sew loose ends of zipper tape together on each end. 8. Align side and bottom edges of A & C with RIGHT sides together; pin. Repeat steps #6 and #7 with second A & C and free side of zipper. Unpin first A & C pieces. 2 How to Make Bias Tape Width of Tape Size of Square Width of Lines Amt Needed 9. Open to expose zipper. Panel should look like the Cosmetic Bag Double fold 9” 2” 40” following: 1. Cut appropriate size square for your project and width of bias tape using chart above. SQUARE CORNERS 2. Place pin on 2 opposite sides of fabric. Cut fabric diagonally from one corner to another. 10. Open zipper ¾ of the way. Align bottom and side edges of A panels with RIGHT sides together. Sew side and bottom edges. 3. With RIGHT sides together, align fabric so pins are on same edge. Ensure that triangles at corners are equal; trim triangles. Sew pinned edge using a ¼” seam allowance. Press seam allowance open. 11. Flatten one bottom corner of A so that the bottom 4. Place fabric RIGHT side down. Use ruler to and side seam lines are in the center (look inside mark lines across fabric which are parallel to the long bag; match up side and bottom seams). Open seam edge (refer to chart to determine width of lines). Draw a allowances; pin. star in the very bottom right corner. Draw another star on top of the first line drawn on right side of panel. 12. Measure down from point ¼”. Draw a horizontal line. Sew across line. 5. RIGHT sides together, align ends to make a tube. Match star in corner with the star on the first line so that the tube is offset by one width. Sew using a ¼” seam allowance; press seam open. 13. Trim off point ¼” from seam line. Repeat steps #10-13 on second corner. 6. Start at line with star and cut along lines all the way around tube to create one long bias strip. For Single Fold: Measure and cut amount needed (refer to chart). Fold side edges in to meet at center. Press new folds. Option: feed strip through 14. Align bottom and side edges of C. Bring one side in to meet center fold and press. Fold second side in 1/8” 15. Repeat steps #10-13 with C panels. from center fold and press. Fold at center line and press. One side of tape will be slightly shorter than the other. Option: feed strip 16. Turn bag RIGHT side out through opening in C. Slip-stitch or topstitch opening in C. Arrange C inside of bag; press. 3 How to Apply Bias Tape Single fold: Lay bias tape WRONG side down on RIGHT side of fabric and sew Check out our other patterns! each long edge using a 1/8”-1/4” seam allowance. www.cozynestdesign.com Double fold: 1. Double fold bias tape usually has a longer and shorter side. Unfold center fold and then shorter side fold (you can keep opposite, longer side folded). Lay bias tape WRONG side up on RIGHT side of fabric. Align edges. Sew following side fold, (approx. ¼” seam allowance). Open seam and press. 2. Turn panel over. Fold bias tape to WRONG side to encase raw edge. 3. 4. Pin bias tape in place on RIGHT side of fabric. Sew RIGHT side up overlapping the seam where bias tape and fabric are joined in step #1 (“stitch in the ditch”). Note: If you have bias tape where both sides are equal; follow steps #1 & 2, then sew back side of bias tape in place using a 1/8” seam allowance. Tip: If you have a difficult time applying your bias tape smoothly around curves, try ironing it into the shape before sewing. Simply “trace” the arc of the curve with the bias tape and press.
