  • Relationship Between Transmigration, Urbanization and Poverty Alleviation in Indonesia
25 Tjiptoherijanto I. INTRODUCTION Population growth in Indonesia still remains high for the past thirty years. The development process has increased people's awareness to limit their families size. However, at the same time successful development also brought an improvement in the health of the majority of families which will reduce the death rate. Among the consequences of population growth in Indonesia is the increase differentials in density of population among regions and urban- rural areas. This affects the quality of life in the respected regions. In addition, this condition is also increasing the social problems such as availability of clean environment and other social services, especially in urban areas. Therefore, the problems of urbanization as well as adaptation of migrants in the new socio-economic environment, and may be political aspea, become more serious in the last two decades.

Volume 16 Number 2 ISSN 2314-1234 (Print) Page October 2020 ISSN 2620-5882 (Online) 123—142 Indonesian Authors in Geneeskundige Tijdschrift voor Nederlands Indie as Constructors of Medical Science WAHYU SURI YANI Alumny History Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada Email: [email protected] or [email protected] Abstract Access to the publication Geneeskundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch-Indië (GTNI), Keywords: a Dutch Indies medical journal, was limited to European doctors. Although Stovia Bahder Djohan; (School ter Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen) was established to produce indigenous Constructor; (Bumiputra) doctors, its students and graduates were not given access to GTNI. In GTNI; response, educators at Stovia founded the Tijdschrift Voor Inlandsche Geneeskundigen Leimena; (TVIG) as a special journal for indigenous doctors. Due to limited funds, TVIG – Stovia; Pribumi the only scientific medical publication for indigenous doctors – ceased publication Doctors; TVIG in 1922. The physicians formed Vereeniging van Inlandsche Geneeskundigen (VIG) an association for pribumi (native) doctors to express various demands for equal rights, one of which was the right to access GTNI. The protests and demands of the bumiputra doctors resulted not only in being granted reading access rights but also being able to become writers for GTNI. Bumiputra doctors who contributed to GTNI included Bahder Djohan and Johannes Leimena. However, they were not the only authors who contributed to GTNI during the Dutch East Indies era. After Indonesia became independent, both doctors played major roles in laying the foundation for Indonesia’s health education system and implementing village-based health policies. This article is part of a research project on Indonesia’s health history using the archives of the GTNI, TVIG and books written by doctors who contributed to GTNI which were published from the early twentieth century onwards.

TAMAN SISWA AND THE INDONESIAN NATIONAL AWAKENING Ruth T. McVey Adjustment to foreign-imposed change is both difficult and humiliating, and the early response of the Javanese elite to European conquest was to save what they could by denying the foreigners culturally while conceding to them politically. This reaction brought a flowering of Javanese high culture, but it also made that style of life seem increasingly remote and irrel evant to the problems of the time. By the late nineteenth century some people were beginning to urge accomodation to the alien sys tem that, however unfamiliar and unpleasant, seemed to contain the future. They came, in this beginning period, from those members of the elite who were well enough placed to acquaint themselves with western culture and also sufficiently on the periphery of the traditional system to be able to consider the old order with some detachment and to find profit in its modification. These advocates were to be found first of all among the bupati (regents) of what had been the outer lands of the realm, whose desire to maximize freedom from the political-cultural center encouraged an openness to outside ideas and a predeliction for the role of mediator. The "progressive" bupati were naturally from among the more intellectually daring of that class, and above all they represented its younger generation, whose vision of the world was set by exposure to western education, by a greater conscious ness of European penetration, and by a more acute realization of the decay of the traditional order than had prevailed when their fathers' view of life had been formed.

The questions of this research are 1) what is the condition of Islamic historical heritages in Northern Java? and 2) how is student's multiculturalism knowledge developed? This project was carried out using a grounded research design (Strauss & Corbin, 1997). This research involved 40 students from social science education classes and was carried out in junior high schools in northern Java. The research data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and participant observation. The data obtained were analysed using the critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach. The important findings of this research are that: 1) Islamic historical heritages in northern Java have the potential of multiculturalism constructed by past events; 2) multicultural potential is a symbol of religious tolerance and the culture of first generation Islamic propagators in Java; 3) the learning of social science originating from historical heritages is able to develop awareness, idealism, and multiculturalism knowledge of students. This research recommends that social science learning can accommodate the students to study surrounding historical heritage buildings as the source of multiculturalism learning. This relates to the preservation of historical heritages, the transmission of values, and the regeneration of agents for tolerance in society.
