1. Drink water with gratitude: It may be the easiest way to celebrate. Enjoy a tall glass of water and as you do, practice gratefulness. Unfortunately, 2.2 billion people globally live without access to safe water. Yet for those people who do have access to safe, clean water freely flowing into their homes, it is easy to take for granted. On World Water Day, let’s remind ourselves to be thankful for safe, clean water— and the people who work to enable it.

2. Create a Water Diary: Help your family understand the importance of water by developing awareness of your own daily consumption. For one day, have your children write down all the water you use during the day. Ask them to think about their entries in detail, e.g. do they leave the tap on while brushing their teeth? How long do they spend in the shower? What household chores would much harder without water? How much water was used to make a meal? Use online resources, like the Water Challenge Badge to explore, play, discover and come up with clever ways to help preserve water in your home.

3. Practice responsible use of water: Armed with your water diary, take up the challenge to be more mindful of your family’s water use. Agree to some strategies to try to reduce your usage during your day-to-day routines, such a shorter showers, fuller dishwashers, and turning off the tap while brushing teeth or washing dishes.

4. Watch a documentary about the future of water: We suggest Brave Blue World, a powerful new documentary on Netflix that explores how new technologies and ground breaking innovations can create a sustainable water future for the entire planet. The documentary paints an optimistic picture of how humanity is adopting new technologies to re-think how we manage water (including two of DuPont’s customers who are finding value from endlessly recycling water).

5. Give the gift of clean water: There are many great organizations working to increase access to clean, safe water around the world— and even a small gift can make a difference to a girl who spends several hours of her day walking for unsafe water. May we suggest charity: water, as 100 percent of your gift goes to clean water. https://www.charitywater.org/dupont. Watch charity: water’s video on how Water Changes Everything or Why Water? with your kids to start a discussion on the value of water. (Note: In 2020, DuPont became charity: water’s first brand partner in the water technology sector. DuPont is pleased to support charity: water’s efforts to increase access to clean water and looks forward to offering our expertise to advance this shared purpose). (continued) 6. Siegel • Water 4.0: The Past, Present, and Future of the World’s Most Vital Resource, David Sedlak • Replenish, The Virtuous Cycle of Water and Prosperity, Sandra Postel 7. Here are a few water experiments we’ve pulled together to help you celebrate the day. (We thought these would be especially fun for so many of the kids still learning from home). • Pollution and Filtration Experiments for Kids (from the Water Project) • Build a Water Filter with coffee filters (Teach Beside Me) • Make a Water Filter: (National Geographic Kids) • ‘Clean Water For All’ Lesson Plan (World’s Largest Lesson) • Water Cycle Lessons: (Generation Genius) 8. Listen to (and contribute to) a music playlist that celebrates water: As you may guess, there are hundreds of songs that celebrate water or leverage the symbolism of water. But did you know there is an entire album that was written to call attention to the looming water shortage in Capetown, South Africa? (Critical as Water, Jeremy Loops). Or that a new song was written during the COVID-19 pandemic to thank all of the essential water workers who have helped provide safe, clean water around the world?
