They also agree that they will not expect the Released Parties to teach them how to swim or snorkel and that prior to the activity they will have the skills necessary to participate without assistance. It is required that the PI or Group Leader possess at least minimal snorkel skills. (Recommended minimal skills supplied upon request) ______2. THEY UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE INHERENT RISKS INVOLVED WITH SNORKELING AND BOATING, included but not limited to equipment failure, perils of the sea, harm caused by marine creatures (including bites), acts of fellow participants, entering and exiting the water, boarding or disembarking boats, and activities on the docks and THEY HEREBY ASSUME SUCH RISKS. ______3. They are physically fit to swim and participate in the Activities and understand that they can be physically strenuous activities and that they will be exerting themselves during the Activities. -

Wakodahatchee Wetlands Is a park in Delray Beach with a three-quarter mile boardwalk that crosses between open water ponds and marches. Patch Reef Park & DeHoernle Park Parks in Boca Raton that have an abundant of sports and recreation facilities. Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens The gardens at this Japanese cultural center in Delray Beach in- clude paradise garden, various styles of rock and Zen gardens, and a museum. Gumbo Limbo This Nature Center and Environmental Complex includes an indoor museum with fish tanks with fish, turtles, and other sea life. Snorkeling Blowing Rocks This is an environmental preserve on Jupiter Island in Hobe Sound. This peaceful, barrier island sanctuary is known for large-scale, native coastal habitat restoration. Lantana Beach Lantana is a coastal community in Palm Beach and 10 feet off shore there is a pretty good areas to snorkel. Red Reef Park A 67-acre oceanfront park in Boca Raton for swimming, snorkeling, and surf fishing that includes a nature center. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Is known as “The Shore Diving Capital of South Florida”. There are two coral reef lines that are just a short swim from the beach. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park The first undersea park that encompasses about 70 natural square miles. -

Hydrology Big River WAU SECTION C HYDROLOGY INTRODUCTION This section provides the available river peak flow data for the South Fork Big River (1961-1974), Navarro River (1951-1998) and Noyo River (1952-1998). Other than the few years of stream flow information on the South Fork Big River there is little information on peak storm events in Big River, thus the information from the Noyo River and the Navarro River is presented to give an indication of storm timing and magnitude. High river peak flow events are indicative of the largest storms, with large storms typically comes high erosion and sediment transport events. The Big River WAU does not receive significant snow accumulations that could contribute to rain-on- snow events. Current research shows possible cumulative effects from increased peak flows from forest harvest in rain-on-snow dominated areas (Harr, 198l). However, in rain dominated areas increases in large stream peak flows (i.e. > 20 year event) from forest harvesting are not found (Ziemer, 1981; Wright et. al., 1990). The Big River WAU is a rain-dominated area in the temperate coastal zone of Northern California therefore analysis on peak flow hydrologic change was not done. PEAK FLOWS The peak flow information was taken from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) gage 11468070, South Fork Big River, from water years 1961-1974 (no data for 1971-1973). To estimate the recurrence interval of the flood events of the South Fork Big River the USGS annual peak flow series was used. An extreme value type I distribution (Gumbel, 1958) was fitted to the data. -

THE SUBMARINE REVIEW FIXED SONAR SYSTEMS THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE UNDEWATER SILENT SENTINEL by LT John Howard, United States Navy Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California Undersea Warfare Department Executive Summary One of the most challenging aspects of Anti-Submarine War- fare (ASW) has been the detection and tracking of submerged contacts. One of the most successful means of achieving this goal was the Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS) developed by the United States Navy in the early 1950's. It was designed using breakthrough discoveries of the propagation paths of sound through water and intended to monitor the growing submarine threat of the Soviet Union. SOSUS provided cueing of transiting Soviet submarines to allow for optimal positioning of U.S. ASW forces for tracking and prosecution of these underwater threats. SOSUS took on an even greater national security role with the advent of submarine launched ballistic missiles, ensuring that U.S. forces were aware of these strategic liabilities in case hostilities were ever to erupt between the two superpowers. With the end of the Cold War, SOSUS has undergone a number of changes in its utilization, but is finding itself no less relevant as an asset against the growing number of modern quiet submarines proliferating around the world. Snorkeling, Yes Or No?
SNORKELING, YES OR NO? Snorkeling is the practice of swimming at the surface of a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped tube called a snorkel, and usually swimfins to observe underwater attractions for extended periods of time with relatively little effort. Snorkel The most common places to do this activity are warm tropical waters, as the Caribbean, the Coral Sea, the Red Sea or even the Canary Islands. The primary attraction of snorkeling is the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting. coral reefs, fish, cephalopods, starfish, sea urchins, mollusks, jellyfish, shrimps, sea turtles, various types of sea cactus. Snorkeling is easy, it doesn’t require especial training, you only have to swim and to breathe through the snorkel, which is a plastic tube about thirty centimeters, usually J-shaped, fitted with a mouthpiece. Normally, it’s only necessary instruction about equipment usage and basic safety. It’s not an expensive activity: diving mask, snorkel and swimfins are a cheap equipment, you just need to be able to reach the sea. And it’s ideal to practice as a family activity or with friends. For all these reasons, I’d like very much to practice snorkeling because I’m very fond of swimming and I want to observe underwater life and see shellfish and the other animals that live in our coasts. Where did you miss the point??? This is not supposed to be a descriptive essay, but AN OPINION WRITING!!! I´m afraid all this work is good for nothing and you will have to do it again. -

USDA Forest Service Cherokee National Forest The Land of Many Uses Snorkeling in the Cherokee National Forest Snorkeling in the Cherokee National Forest • Groups and Individuals • Everyone is welcome to visit the Cherokee National Forest to enjoy the clear, clean waters and view the abundant aquatic animals • Individuals and non-commercial groups may go to any stream to snorkel • Groups wanting an organized snorkeling experience led by knowledgeable guides with lifeguards present should contact the Forest (see later slide for contact information) Snorkeling in the Cherokee National Forest What you will see • Streams in the Cherokee National Forest have an extraordinarily diverse assemblage of fish. In the clear waters of the snorkeling sites, it is typical to see 15 to 20 species of fish on any given day. Over 45 species of fish have been documented at or near individual sites. • Freshwater drum as large as 6 pounds swim in schools in the deep pools; sporting fish, such as bass and bream, are seen in their natural habitats. Colorful darters and shiners may be seen spawning and feeding. • Several thousand fish will be present on any given day. The experience is like swimming in an aquarium full of fish. Turtles, tadpoles and salamanders are all usually present. Snorkeling in the Cherokee National Forest Where to go • Directions to the Conasauga River: Take I-75 to Cleveland, TN exit #20 (Cleveland by-pass). Take the bypass 6.5 miles to US 64 east (towards Ocoee); follow US 64 8 miles to Hwy 411. Turn right (south) onto 411. Travel 6.7 miles on US 411 and turn left onto TN 313 at the Marathon gas station (Ladd Springs Road which becomes Willis Springs Rd.).
