PRIMARY POINT Summer 2015 Kyol Che Man Cham—1982 Zen Master Seung Sahn Editor’s Note: Much of this issue is devoted to the practice of Kyol Che, the traditional 90-day retreat. Our school is able to offer these retreats in Europe, America and Asia at a number of centers. Students have the unique opportunity of practicing intensively during this period with a teacher’s guidance and with a sangha. Some of our teachers and students have offered their perspective on this practice, which we are grateful to share. We begin with a traditional Man Cham speech by Zen Master Seung Sahn from 1982, to start the Winter Kyol Che at Diamond Hill Monastery at Providence Zen Center. Man Cham is a lengthy formal speech that was part of the Korean and Chinese tradition in the past. The speech is too long to include in its entirety here, so we left out gates 7–9. 201 The following kong-an is number nine from the Blue Cliff Records: When you have a clear mirror, the beautiful and the ugly reveal themselves. When you hold the legendary sword, you can kill or grant life, as the moment dictates. Chinese come, foreigners go: foreigners come, Chinese go. In death there is already life: in life there is already death. Now tell me, what can you do? Unless your eye can penetrate all barriers and your body is free to make any turn, you can’t do a thing. But what is this eye that can penetrate all barriers? What is this body that is free to make any turn? Read this kong-an and see: A monk asked Jo-ju, “What is Jo-ju?” Jo Ju answered, “ East Gate, West Gate, South Gate, North Gate.” Strange language. We usually think that when a man dies he is dead, and when he lives he is alive. But in this language, life is death, death is life. Where does life come from? Where does death go? Life and death are only thinking. You must go beyond life and death. That is infinite life. It is “like this.” “Like this” is Jo-Ju’s original face. Mountains are mountains, rivers are rivers: yellow is yellow, red is red. Jo-Ju’s teacher, Nam Chan, said that everyday mind is the Way. Everyday mind is the mind that cuts off all thinking. It is the same as a mirror: when the beautiful comes, it is beautiful: When the ugly comes, it is ugly.

  • The Compass of Zen by Zen Master Seung Sahn
I N D E X to The Compass of Zen by Zen Master Seung Sahn John Holland Ty Koontz The Kwan Um School of Zen 2016 Foreword Zen Master Seung Sahn tells many good stories in his book, including how he shocked a group of French priests in explaining primary point to them and how nuns from the Eastern temple and the Western temple vied to impress Zen Master Hak Un with their pronunciations of Kwan Seum Bosal. When I prepare a dharma talk, the question for me has always been, where in The Compass of Zen are the stories discussed? The work desperately needed an index. Experience told me it would be a difficult task, and I turned for help to Ty Koontz. I had admired the index Ty made for Zen Master Wu Kwang’s (Richard Shrobe) book Elegant Failure: A Guide to Zen Koans and was delighted that Ty agreed to help me. Because we have attempted to do justice to DSSN’s teaching, for which we are all so grateful, this index is long. The ideal index does not exist. All an indexer can do is to make the best possible index he or she can. That means following one’s intuition and general knowledge. One of the most challenging aspects of making an index for The Compass of Zen is the way in which everything is interrelated. Cross-references are needed to help the reader find related concepts while avoiding an enormous snarled spider-web of relationships. Main headings for concepts like attainment, emptiness, meditation, mind, practice, suffering, thinking, and truth are necessary, but these concepts relate to so much of the book that subentries could easily overwhelm the index.

601 13 June, 1977 Dear Soen Sa Nim, Lincoln Rhodes sent me the color photo of the four of us before the altar of your center in Los Angeles. It brought back very pleasant memories of your hospitality and our happy time together. I will take the photo with me to Japan on a forthcoming trip as something very interesting to show to my teacher Yamada Koun Roshi and to Dharma friends. Our training schedule is well under way, and a five-day seshin is scheduled to begin the end of this week. I find that new students in their 30’s and 40’s are appearing more and more. May you continue to enjoy good health! Robert Aitken July 8, 1977 Dear Aitken Roshi, Thank you for your postcard. I am happy to hear you are busy and attracting older students. I will be traveling in Korea and Japan, and if my schedule permits, I will try to visit your teacher. I will be traveling with ten American students, so it may be difficult to rearrange our travel arrangements, but perhaps on my return trip, I can stop in Hawaii. Sometime, I would like to visit your Zen Center. Yours in the Dharma, S.S.
