With the use of political ethnography, I draw on a wide range of sources such as textual literature, films, first-hand qualitative interviews, and participant observation. I make three major arguments: First, the existence of Amerasians and women in the sex trade in the camptowns has always been a polemic issue because it destabilizes the imagined and naturalized national identity which is constituted by the familial state and a biologically essentialist definition of race. In spite of the binary focus on nation and gender, two main strands of discourse -feminist rhetoric and nationalist narratives- have shared class based views on the women in the sex trade. Second, contrasting the public’s imaginations of the sex trade in terms of liaisons with ii foreign nationals, the women’s own narratives and life histories are centered on labor and reinhabitation (of the world). The construction of their life experiences demonstrates that 1) the practice of sex trade is not a question of sex but is on the continuum of other informal works; 2) being subject to victimization at one stage of their lives does not mean that their identities are permanently defined as victims. In re-narrating their lives and work experiences, this dissertation suggests an alternative view on the basis of such terms as “poisonous knowledge” and “abundance from hard labor.” Third, the oppression of women is daily and intersectional/multiple. The act of speech is not identical to voice. Thus, the women often employ unlikely forms of subversions including silence and social distance on a daily basis rather than establishing an open and assertive form of resistance. Its focus is on the encounters of people of colour (defined for the purposes of this study as people of African, Asian and Caribbean descent) with Western convert Buddhist movements, which tend to be predominantly white and middle-class. The study uses an ethnographic case study approach informed by feminist epistemologies. The case-studies are of two of the largest Western convert Buddhist movements in the UK – the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) and Sōka Gakkai International-UK (SGI-UK) – and focus on their branches in the multicultural inner-city location of East London. The findings suggest that most Buddhists of colour in these movements come from the second generation of the diaspora. For the FWBO, there is an apparently hegemonic discourse of middle-class whiteness that people of colour and working class members of this movement have to negotiate as part of their involvement. In contrast, for SGI-UK, the ethos is one of a moral cosmopolitanism that encourages intercultural dialogue thus facilitating the involvement of a considerably more multicultural and international following. People of colour find that their practices of the techniques of the self provided by each movement enable them to feel more empowered in relation to their quotidian experience of racisms and racialisation, as well as encouraging them in a more anti-essentialist approach to identity that sees it as fluid and contingent.

    Sex, Love and Feminism in the Asia Pacific

    Sex, Love and Feminism in the Asia Pacific Sex, love and feminism are three aspects of the changing gender relations that shape young people’s lives in the Asia Pacific region. With the global spread of capitalist production and neoliberal ideologies, the claim that the rest of the world’s women are treading the path to enlightenment and development forged by women in the west has been revived. This book explores that contention through a comparative analysis of the attitudes of young middle-class urbanites in ten countries: the USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, India, Indo- nesia, China and Vietnam. Drawing on detailed empirical research, the study de- scribes and compares attitudes towards the women’s movement, sexual relations and family arrangements in the countries considered. It explores young people’s image of feminists and what they feel the women’s movement has achieved for women and men in their country. The book discusses young people’s attitudes to controversial gender issues such as role reversal, sharing housework, abor- tion rights, same-sex sexual relations and pornography. Through a comparative analysis of the gender vocabularies by which young people understand gender issues, the book highlights the role of differences in history, culture, economics and political leadership. These influence attitudes to gender relations, the status of women and the political programs of the women’s movement in the different countries. Although there are striking parallels between countries and even across the whole sample, those similarities do not fall neatly into a simple dichotomy of the ‘west versus the rest’.

    Revista de Estudos da Religião Nº 1 / 2001 / pp. 57-72 ISSN 1677-1222 Being Zen-Buddhist in the Land of Catholicism Cristina Moreira da Rocha Introduction In this century, the West saw a fast expansion of Buddhism, which until then had been confined to the East. (Dumoulin, 1992: viii) With Buddhism, we see a radically different way of thinking and seeing the world because it is based on the absence of God and in the idea that everybody is his own Buddha. Through the practice of meditation, discipline or devotion (depending on the Buddhist school), anyone may get enlightened and become a Buddha (literally "an enlightened being"). Moreover, for Buddhism men and nature are part of the same whole. Nature was not created to serve men as dictates the Christianity. These elements - the possibility of individual enlightenment, of liberating mind and of union with nature - had a big appeal and opened the doors for Buddhism to arrive and disseminate itself in the West through the most varied schools from the whole Asia. To trace the history of the expansion of Buddhism in the West goes beyond the scope of this paper, but it is important to relate Buddhism with the Counterculture movement that started in 1950s and its development - the New Age movement - because they are also part of the history of how Zen Buddhism evolved in Brazil. The beatnik movement opened the doors for Zen Buddhism in the United States. The beats saw in Zen's plea for unattachment to worldly things the answer to their rebellion against the consumerism of the post World War II.

SIMON, M.D.* Ultimately science must be able to state that if a person with certain personality elements in a certain configuration happens to be in a certain typical life situation, he will probably react in a certain manner, whether the law punishes this response as a crime or tolerates it as unimportant. Thorsten Sellin Culture, Conflict and Crime Bad men do what good men dream, observed the sage, and psychiatrists are frequently called upon to explain why. Murder is the crime of crimes. The murderer particularly inspires the ultimate in feelings of repugnance, fear and fascination for violating man's most sacrosanct commandment - thou shalt not kill. While the immediate circumstances of the murder may be unspeakably horrible, the later examination of the murderer is another matter. No blood-dripping monster, the murderer is frequently a quiet, reasonably cooperative, decent-appearing human being, uncomfortably like us. Add to this that "good men's" consciences are regularly perturbed by murderous phantasies and dreams, and the objective study of the murderer, his victim and the interaction of the murderer with the criminal justice system becomes very difficult. Theodore Reik has put the matter squarely: "If wishes were horses, they would pull the hearses of our dearest friends and nearest relatives. All men are murderers at heart." Although the psychiatrist is not free from these perturbations, his professional training and access to individuals who commit murder present a unique opportunity for clinical study, with the eventual aim of treatment and prevention of this most destructive form of aggression.
