10.25.10 – Mike Benoit Press Conference – Transcript Mike Benoit: Before you turn your cameras on, I just have to tell you a little story. I really don’t want you to report it. You can record my voice but I really don’t want to be on camera with this. Mark Davis: Mr. Benoit, what do you want? Do you want this to be on the record or off? MB: This I want to be off the record. Davis: Well then we won’t roll this. MB: Okay. 1983, I was on a construction site talking to an engineer. As we were talking, I saw a piece of metal that they had been lifting off the roof, it broke off and it started to fall. Natural reaction I went to catch it. As I went to catch it I sliced the tendons in this finger. I went to the hospital, of course, and with tendons they tend to keep you up your arm. Well I can’t actually move that finger anymore. It’s become a problem for me because when my son would come to town and we went to the gym or something, if I was up there doing arm curls, this is what it would like… Please forgive me if I’m talking today and giving gestures that would indicate that you’d suspect that I’m giving you the finger. That really is not the case. Okay, now we can go live. The first thing I want to address today is, people are going to ask me, Why are you here today? How did you get here? Did someone bring you here? Did someone pay for your trip? What is that all about? Approximately 2 weeks ago, a fellow that I have talked to for quite a long time, a fellow named Irv Muchnick that does a lot of blogging, and I’m sure some of you have heard his name, got in touch with me and said there is someone with the Blumenthal campaign that would like to talk to you. -

Chris Benoit's Final Days By Larry Sutton What Made the Wrestler Snap? Answers—and More Questions—About the Brutal Murders of His Wife and Young Son. From PEOPLE Magazine Backstage at the Philips Arena in Atlanta last April 29, wrestler Brad Armstrong caught up with his old friend Chris Benoit, who minutes before had successfully defended his championship title at the WWE Backlash event. "I hate to bug you, but after you get showered and cool down, if you have a minute, the kids would love to meet you," said Armstrong, referring to his 6-year-old daughter and her pals. No problem, answered Benoit. "I'll stay dressed and show them my championship belt." When the kids trooped in, Benoit knelt down to get face-to-face with a little boy named Ben. "Hey, buddy, how old are you?" he asked. Seven, came the reply. "I have a son who's 7 also," Benoit said, putting his giant belt on the child and posing for a picture. Could that possibly be the same Chris Benoit who police in Georgia say is behind the stunning double murder and suicide that claimed the lives of his wife, Nancy, and son Daniel? Fayette County investigators released new details of the crime scene to PEOPLE on July 2: Daniel, with what were described as old needle marks on his arm, was found in his bed in his pajamas with his stomach down and head turned to the side; he suffered internal damage to the throat but no sign of trauma around his neck. -

ChrisNancy_6:ChrisNancy_SAMPLE_TEXT 7/13/09 4:03 PM Page 79 CHAPTER 6 Tribute to a Murderer just as the eyes are the windows to the soul, the decision by World Wrestling Entertainment to stage a three-hour tribute to Chris Benoit on the usa cable net- work’s June 25 , 2007 , edition of Raw vividly illustrated the depravity at the heart of a peculiar genre. But tepid moralism exaggerates or misunderstands the lesson. Or to put it more precisely, the exaggeration becomes an excuse for the misunderstanding. While respectable opinion can legitimately lament the cliché of wrestling’s festival of poor taste, the lament soon becomes its own cliché, and does nothing to prevent more performers from dying — by the bushel. An intelligent perspective on the Benoit tribute goes on to take a hard look at everything a huge corpo ration achieved when it brought its considerable resources to bear on containing the fall- out of the Benoit crime. Dan Abrams, on msnbc , was among those who, at the time, denounced “spending three hours celebrating a guy . the authorities now say is a murderer.” Worse, the tribute plotline echoed, mocked, and, in its inimitably weird way, validated the sentimental exploitation of 79 ChrisNancy_6:ChrisNancy_SAMPLE_TEXT 7/13/09 4:03 PM Page 80 CHRIS & NANCY previous non-homicidal wrestling deaths for tv ratings. The most pungent ironies began — but, like all wrestling “angles,” never really ended — with the fact that this par- ticular tribute happened to bump an already planned and fictitious parody show in which wwe chairman Vince McMahon’s own violent death was to have been memorialized. -

McAllister Assistant Graduate Program Chair/Professor of Communications Russell Frank Associate Professor of Communications *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. iii ABSTRACT This study examines the use of various frames in newspaper coverage of professional wrestler Chris Benoit’s double murder-suicide and how the crime was used by journalists in framing professional wrestling and the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). A content analysis of 133 articles from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Associated Press, The Miami Herald, The New York Times, and The Sun-Sentinel was used for the study. Articles gathered for the sample began on the day of the crime, June 25, 2007 to one year later. Crosstab analysis revealed that a frame that made performance-enhancing drugs central to the narrative was prominent in print media coverage. The use of a domestic violence frame was absent from the majority of news coverage used for this study. Professional wrestling, as well as World Wrestling Entertainment, did not seem to be framed negatively in relationship -

The Veiled Production of Debility in Professional Wrestling Brooks Oglesby University of South Florida [email protected] This paper examines the relationship between disability, debility, and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) media texts such as “Don’t try this at home” public service announcements in order to interrogate the “early death” phenomenon that has pervaded the professional wrestling industry in recent decades. Through its production of images of disability, largely only through a paradigm of spectacular in- ring injury, WWE veils the ways in which such productions produce debility in its performers. Drawing from Jasbir Puar, debility addresses long-term and taken-for- granted wearing down of subjugated groups, a concept which, as seen in WWE, is tied to the expansion of corporate profits. WWE, in pursuit of greater profits, disappears its production of debility behind a veil of public relations messaging and limited disability representation that relies upon the reification of hypermasculinity and compulsory able-bodiedness in its performers. Keywords: debility; disability; hypermasculinity; WWE The rate of early death among WWE performers has far outpaced any professional sport (Morris). Although in-ring performances are designed to minimize the risk of overt injury and impairment, professional wrestlers notoriously suffer long-term bodily tolls. This wearing down of bodies—a “slow death” that accounts for “the debilitating ongoingness of structural inequality and suffering” (Puar, The Right to Maim 1)—is well-known among professional wrestling fans, so much so that popular sports blog Deadspin published a weekly “Dead Wrestler of the Week” column in the early 2010s (Shoemaker), chronicling professional wrestlers who have died early either directly, having died as a result of either a discrete in-ring injury, or through decades of wearing their bodies down in service of spectacle and corporate profit. -

Rasslin’ In Court By Reg P. Wydeven March 13, 2010 Growing up in the 1980s, I was a huge fan of professional wrestling. One of my favorites was Bret the “Hit Man” Hart. Hart was trained by his famous father, Stu Hart, who trained dozens of professional wrestling champions in the basement of his mansion in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Dubbed “The Dungeon,” the walls and ceilings of the basement were riddled with holes from body slams. One of Stu’s best pupils, Chris Benoit, went on to become a two-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Known as the Canadian Crippler, Benoit was also an extremely skilled wrestler who would cause his opponents to submit by using his signature move, the crippler cross-face. But during one tragic weekend in the summer of 2007, events played out that were way more outrageous than any wrestling script. Police discovered in Benoit’s Atlanta-area home that he had bound his 43-year- old wife, Nancy, and then strangled her. He then drugged and strangled his 7-year-old son, Daniel, before committing suicide by hanging himself with a weight machine. The police were unable to ever establish a formal motive, however, an autopsy revealed that Benoit’s body contained testosterone, painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs. Additionally, performance-enhancing anabolic steroids were later found in the home. Doctors also discovered Benoit suffered from brain damage from “prior repetitive injury” presumably caused by a series of concussions from his high-flying moves in the ring. After the crime, photographer Mark Samansky sold nude pictures of Nancy to ‘Hustler,’ the racy men’s magazine founded by Larry Flynt, and they appeared in the March 2008 issue. -
