Inside-Out and Downside-Up Inside-out and downside-up How leading from the middle has the power to transform education systems A think/action piece by Steve Munby & Michael Fullan January 2016 1 The purpose of this think/action piece is to stimulate discussion at our Global Dialogue event, which brings together educators from five countries across three continents to debate the challenges and opportunities presented by cluster-based school collaboration when used as a vehicle for school improvement. The need for the Global Dialogue event has become ever more apparent in conversations we have been having over the last few months, so we are very excited to have the opportunity to share and debate some of the crucial tensions and issues facing educators and policymakers alike. In the paper we start by commenting briefly on what we see as the inadequacies of the status quo; second, we propose a model of school collaboration which we feel has the potential to mitigate this issue; and third, we return to the bigger picture and in particular the role of the Leader in the Middle – the networked leader. These are leaders who link laterally to create change in the middle as they partner upwards with the state and downwards to all schools and communities. In each section, we have included some questions to the reader as the basis for reflection now and as a stimulus for future debate. Finally, we think it is important to explain what this paper is not. This isn’t an academic paper and isn’t intended for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. We are interested in peer review, but not in this way! We have included some references in a bibliography at the end for anyone interested in finding out more about these issues, but the majority of evidence we draw on here comes from our practice and experience. We share this to provide stimulus both for leaders in localities who want to make a bigger difference, and for those whose role it is to support and leverage such leaders for system transformation.     Mikky Ekko has come home. He recorded his 2015 debut album, Time, in places as far-flung as London, Stockholm, and Los Angeles, plus any point on the compass where inspiration struck while he was on tour with Justin Timberlake, One Republic and Jessie Ware. But he wanted to record Fame, his next album, in the city that had proved both a permanent address and an inspiration for him since moving there in 2005 to attend college. It’s said that people have lucky cities, a geographic location where they seem to flourish or feel that they are their best selves. Although born in Shreveport, Louisiana, with its rich history of country rock and electric blues, Ekko found such a place in Nashville. It allowed him the freedom to be who he wanted to be — starting with those early gigs he played at 12th and Porter with slashes of red painted across his chiseled face. It informed the haunting music of his largely a cappella 2009 dreamscape Strange Fruit, a five-song EP he recorded while still a student at nearby Middle Tennessee State University that had far more in common with Brian Eno than it did Billie Holiday. A restless creator — sometimes writing two songs a day, starting most days at 4:45 am — Ekko quickly followed up Strange Fruit with two companion EPs the next year: Reds and Blues. One of the songs on Reds, "Who Are You, Really,” made its way to underground beatsmith Clams Casino, known mainly for his work with ASAP Rocky, Lil B and The Weeknd.

Launched in August, 2010, SPN adopted an asset- based and resident-driven strategy to transform vulnerable neighborhoods by ensuring the academic and social success of the youth within a defined geographic locality. SPN was conceived as an initiative that would eventually impact all of Springfield by engaging citizens and youth to envision and achieve a preferred future story. The early piloting of the model has taken place in partnership with Lincoln Elementary School and its attendance zone, which represents a 110-block area surrounding the school. This case analysis has been undertaken in order to reflect on the progress made and the lessons learned from the initial six years of the project and consider how these findings could be integrated into a scalable model that could influence other neighborhoods within Springfield.
