Diocesan Ministry Educator role The Diocese of Dunedin is looking for a Ministry Educator. Applications close this Friday 7 September.

This exciting and challenging full time role covers the Dunedin Diocese throughout Otago and Southland. It involves being part of a team seeking to equip our Clergy -Parishes to develop, grow and sustain effective faith communities in a rapidly changing social environment.

Are you:

Growing in your own faith and committed to strengthening the faith of others?

Someone with excellent communication and networking skills, used to getting along side others and helping them reach their full potential? Experienced in being able to plan and deliver theological and pastoral education to a wide variety of people and groups?

Self-motivated and able to design and plan education programmes that enable our faith communities to “…read the Bible, pray and live out the life of Jesus Christ”?

Committed to your own theological and spiritual development - a learner as well as a teacher?

A broad thinker, able to see the bigger picture and discern where God is leading?

We are looking for someone that we can explore together if this is the direction God is calling you.

You must have a background of sound theological training and preferably be ordained and in good standing with the Anglican Church, but we will consider an appropriately skilled layperson. You must be committed to the Anglican Church in NZ - Aotearoa, including partnership with Tikanga Maori and Tikanga Pasefika.

A copy of the position description is attached below, the closing date for applications is Friday 7 September 2018. For any further information please contact the Diocesan Register Andrew Metcalfe as follows:

For Clergy robing - red stoles please.

Celtic-Style Eucharist this Friday @ the Cathedral This Friday 7 September we hold the next (quarterly) Celtic-Style Eucharist, at 12.10pm at the Cathedral.

The liturgy we will use was created by the late Rev'd Helen Mann, on the theme 'Blessed are the peacemakers'. We will honour peacemakers we have encountered in person, in our reading, or simply by repute. Communion will be celebrated by Rev'd Mary Greet, with Helen Watson White assisting. Please bring a symbol of Peace or Spring.

A late-wintry note: the Chapter Room is well heated, and access is easiest on foot from the Octagon, through the first door on the level path on the Harrop Street side. If you enter the cathedral by the Stuart St door, you may proceed downstairs by the carpeted stairway opposite (through the kitchen), or down the marble steps inside or outside at the Octagon end. You can also use the footpath that starts in the carpark and goes right through to the Octagon, but parking is unfortunately restricted to only four carpark places on weekdays, for St Paul's ticket-holders. If you have difficulty with transport, we can certainly use carpooling to assist people going home, and phone/email me by Thursday 9pm if you'd also like to be picked up on Friday morning.

Co-ordinator (467 2936)

Diocesan Website Improvements The Diocesan Website is still a work in progress.

The website developers have been working on the site and we are still exploring whether we need to completely renew the site. We are working on updating directory information and can put the latest forms in place - but not the statutes. We have been able to put the Statutes back onto the website in .pdf (read only) format, if you click on the links they will take you to each document in a temporary drop box. See http://calledsouth.org.nz/downloads/diocesan-procedures/

In the meantime, the weekly newsletter continues to work well and we will continue to update people with any information and updates until things get sorted.

Please also note that some xtra email addresses are still having difficulties with receiving mail from the Diocesan Office and news updates. This seems to be to do with xtra spam filters - please check your junk mail or contact the Diocesan office if you have an alternative email address and would like to receive emails through that.

Many thanks for your ongoing patience. New Era for St John's Parish, Invercargill The Anglican Diocese of Dunedin is announcing along with the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) the sale of St John’s Anglican Church, hall and grounds to the SIT.

The SIT is planning to strengthen and repurpose these facilities as part of a larger Creative Centre between Tay and Esk Streets. The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Dunedin, the Rt. Rev’d Steve Benford says:

“This has been a difficult process as far as the St John’s parish is concerned, but a really positive outcome for them. They have increasingly been struggling to maintain this complex and the sale will enable the building – an important Taonga in Invercargill – to be preserved and used in new ways to the benefit of the wider community. It will also free the Parish to focus on its mission and ministry within Invercargill and beyond. Although there is a sadness to be leaving a place that has been so important to the Parish over many years, there is a real anticipation for what God will be able to do in and through them in the future.”

150 years of the Diocese of Dunedin - Remembering Bishop Robinson As we work towards the 150th birthday next year, we remember Bishop Walter Wade Robinson, Bishop from 1969 to 1975.

There is less about Bishop Robinson on public domains than other Bishops (as he was around within living memory, please contact us if you have any memories of him).

Walter Wade Robinson (10 December 1919 - 6 October 1975) was an Anglican priest in the second half of the 20th century. Robinson was educated at the Cathedral Grammar School, Christchurch and Canterbury University before his ordination in 1943. He was curate of St Mary’s Timaru and then of St Gabriels, Cricklewood. He then had incumbencies at Linwood and Viti Levu West. Later he was superintendent of the Indian Mission in Labasa and general secretary of the New Zealand Anglican Board of Missions. In 1969 he was appointed Bishop of Dunedin. He died in office in 1975 in his 57th year.

From the latest ICHC (Hospital Chaplaincy) Newsletter This week we forwarded the latest newsletter from the Interchurch Hospital Chaplaincy Board (ICHC). Below is a short article from Tim Pratt, the CEO.

As an Occupational Therapist, Alysha Pratt (Tim's daughter) works at Tiaho Mai (the Mental Health inpatient wards at Middlemore Hospital). She has chosen to specialise her Occupational Therapy career by undertaking post-graduate study in mental health. Consequently, just currently, one of my most important jobs is to provide pro-bono proof reading services for my daughters assignments.

This week, her latest offering comprised a critique of extant literature comparing Māori and Pakeha constructs of recovery for mental health tangata whaiora (service users). Amidst the 4000 word treatise, the following sentence stood out:

“the Ministry of Health, (2017) state that many health services lack recognition of taha wairua (spiritual health).”

This assertion reminded me of a discussion shared with a Kaumatua and Finance Manager of a DHB earlier in the year. He talked of Professor Mason Durie’s model of te whare tapa whā’ (holistic healthcare) which advocates that hauora (welllbeing) is the result of four components (or metaphorical walls making a strong building) which comprise a person’s wellbeing. These areas include Taha Tinana (physical), Taha Hinengaro (mental), Taha Whanau (social) and Taha Wairua (spiritual).

From these two encounters it seems clear to me that officials in both the Ministry of Health and the country’s District Health Boards perceive much value in spiritual care as a critical component of our public healthcare system. Similarly, in the last month I have heard from more than one CEO of a District Health Board who has wanted to express to ICHC the importance and value they place on our Chaplaincy teams. Equally, many favourable comments concerning the importance and value of our ministry are progressively coming to ICHC through comments made by participants in new research being conducted by Rev. Dr. Noel Tiano.

However, the Kaumatua/Finance Manager of the DHB commented that if any one of the four walls that make the whare (house) of a persons wellbeing was poorly resourced, then the whole house became vulnerable and could easily collapse, leaving the healthcare of New Zealanders in crisis. He continued by “calling out” to lament the extreme paucity of funding invested by Government to resource taha wairua (spiritual health).

All of this is to suggest that while “blowing our own trumpet” does not come naturally to Chaplains, it’s high time for a little concentrated advocacy to profile the critical importance of the work carried out by our team each day in New Zealand’s public hospitals. Accordingly, in the coming months Anna and I hope to meet with the Minister of Health, along with other Government officials to seek increased support that will not only sustain the viability of our ministry but also enhance the hauora (wellbeing) of those within our hospital communities across the country.

We’ll keep you informed of progress... Ministry of Health. (2017). Māori health models – Te Whare Tapa Whā. Retrieved 1st August, 2018, from https://www.health.govt.nz/ourwork/populations/maori-health/maori-health-models/maori- health-models-te-whare-tapa-wha

Keeping Ourselves Safe This is the second (and updated version) of an occasional note on health and safety in our parishes, workplaces and homes.

Health and Safety

The Diocesan Website has a Health and Safety area with useful templates for parishes, but also information that any of us will find helpful: http://calledsouth.org.nz/downloads/health-safety/. This is based on resources from the InterChurch Bureau, the full range of templates are here: https://www.icbnz.org/hs-resources.html.

If you want some support to “personalise” these templates into policies for your own Parish setting, please contact the Diocesan Registrar [email protected].

One of these templates called WORKING BEE PROCEDURE AND GUIDELINES. It is useful if you are planning to have a clean-up in an area. It gives a checklist for some things that you may (or may not) have thought about, and can help in making sure things are safe. Don’t forget that at this time of the year, one that you (and your Parish) may be particularly interested in is the Safe Driving Policy. Although this is directed at situations where people are using work (including church) provided vehicles, it is relevant to any person who might be using a car on church/parish related activity – for example, transporting people to events or pastoral contact. Ask your parish Wardens/Vestry members if this is covered in your health and safety policies.

Some useful websites for drivers:

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/roadcode/ http://www.newzealand.com/int/feature/driving-road-rules-and-safety/ http://www.newzealand.com/int/feature/driving-in-new-zealand/ http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/roadcode/about-driving/dealing-with-hazards.html http://www.aa.co.nz/about/safety-on-the-roads/decade-of-action/four-ways-to-be-a- safer-driver/

Finally, the Southern DHB has a Winter Wellness programme in place. You might like to share this link around your Parish. Also, below we have placed a Southern DHB brochure on Healthy Homes that you might like to share with your friend and neighbours.

Armistice Centenary 2018 - Peacemakers Oppourtunity Anglican Pacifist Fellowship (AFP) have some resources that can be used in Churces and Schools around Armistice commemorations this year.

Rev'd Donald Reece, AFP Counsellor writes:

There were several movements for peace before 1914: linked to The Hague, Geneva, International Labour and Quakers for example. They were overtaken by war in August 1914. After the years of brutality and suffering, the Armistice on 11 November 1918 was a profound relief, and a vital stage in enemies making peace with each other. Some inadequacies in the subsequent peacemaking were revealed by the outbreak of war in 1939.

Anglican Peacemakers are looking to the Centenary of the Armistice, as more than a closure of conflict: it is a platform for rediscovering the gestures and processes of making that peace in which enemies become friends. We thank God that since 1945, real friendship between Britain and our allies, and Germany and her allies has been established; but in penitence for unresolved embers flaring up into violence since then and in the present.

The Centenary is a great opportunity for representatives of former enemies to embrace each other in peace; whether in Parish Churches, or with ecumenical and community participation in public spaces. We suggest early invitations to local German and other language group congregations; twinning representatives; colleges and schools; sporting links, as well as commercial colleagues and friends.

Attached below are materials for public acts of remembrance and for worship and we offer some examples of reconciliation and peacemaking post 1914. Many of the materials included are written by APF members.

We would also encourage you to consider Remembrance Sundays becoming Peace Sundays. Anglican Women's Studies Centre Please see the attached newsletter and information about AWSC Hui.

St John's College Trust Scholarships for those seeking to Study Christian Education.

Once again the St John's College Trust are offering scholarships for those seeking to Study Christian Education. These scholarship allow you to apply for the full costs of the course you are wishing to undertake. These might be University academic courses, or training courses for Christian Education, for example Spiritual Growth Ministry training course, Clinical Pastoral Education course (CPE), or Education for Ministry (EfM).

If you would like to apply, the contact below will take you to the Trust Boards website https://www.sjctb.co.nz/scholarships

All applications need to be made with forms that can be found at the bottom of that page.

The process is different this year from previous, and a bit of an experiment (a learning process for all involved). If you need any assistance to make your application people feel free to ask, and I will see if I can assist you.

Please make sure that you let people in your parishes, units, faith communities know about this opportunity. It is for both those who offer ministry as ordained people of God or those who offer ministry as lay members of the Anglican Church.

Yours in Christ

Prayer at the Office Many people use versions of the Daily Office as part of a daily prayer routine. At the Diocesan Office we gather for prayer and Eucharist every Wednesday at noon...

It's not quite the Daily Office for the office, but it is a chance to connect with why we are here and who we are serving. Recently we have been taking note of the various Patronal Festivals in the Diocese and making sure that we remember Parishes and communities in our prayers.

We always have one spare seat ready for any guests, so if you are ever in Green Island on a Wednesday at lunchtime near 1A Howden Street and would like to join us, you are most welcome.

And, for any of you who use a Daily Office as part of your own spiritual journey, there are some really useful apps-websites that can help you on your way:

A prayer for our Diocese

O Lord, who has not stopped forming us since the hour of our beginning;

Who has come among us to save us from ourselves and to teach us to love;

Who dwells beside us and within us and below us and above us,

Give us the grace to think again. May we know the joy of true discipleship;

May our relationships with you and with each other be real and deep;

May we have the courage to give our best for the least. In the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.
