Media/Entertainment Rise of webtoons presents opportunities in content providers The rise of webtoons Overweight (Maintain) Webtoons are emerging as a profitable new content format, just as video and music streaming services have in the past. In 2015, webtoons were successfull y monetized in Korea and Japan by NAVER (035420 KS/Buy/TP: W241,000/CP: W166,500) and Kakao Industry Report (035720 KS/Buy/TP: W243,000/CP: W158,000). In late 2018, webtoon user number s April 9, 2020 began to grow in the US and Southeast Asia, following global monetization. This year, NAVER Webtoon’s entry into Europe, combined with growing content consumption due to COVID-19 and the success of several webtoon-based dramas, has led to increasing opportunities for Korean webtoon companies. Based on Google Trends Mirae Asset Daewoo Co., Ltd. data, interest in webtoons is hitting all-time highs across major regions. [Media ] Korea is the global leader in webtoons; Market outlook appears bullish Jeong -yeob Park Korea is the birthplace of webtoons. Over the past two decades, Korea’s webtoon +822 -3774 -1652 industry has created sophisticated platforms and content, making it well-positioned for [email protected] growth in both price and volume. 1) Notably, the domestic webtoon industry adopted a partial monetization model, which is better suited to webtoons than monthly subscriptions and ads and has more upside potent ial in transaction volume. 2) The industry also has a well-established content ecosystem that centers on platforms. We believe average revenue per paying user (ARPPU), which is currently around W3,000, can rise to over W10,000 (similar to that of music and video streaming services) upon full monetization. -

I am Yang Sung-dong, the President and CEO of KBS. As you may know, KBS faced difficulties in 2017 due to a decline in public trust in conjunction with a prolonged strike. However, this laborious period sowed the seeds for our company to be reborn fully committed to serve the nation. Despite the difficult situation, KBS still gave its utmost to fulfill its duty as a public broadcaster and the nation's primary broadcaster. These efforts can be seen through the international domestic accolades awarded to excellent KBS programs such as <Descendents of the Sun>, which won the Grand Prize from the Korea Communications Commission Awards and <Imjin War 1592>, which won the Gold World Medal at the New York Festivals World’s Best TV & Films. -

Look South: New Direction of South Korean Cultural Content Export post-THAAD’s Ban Annisa Pratamasari, Sasha Syaifani and Emanuella Toreh Department of International Relations. Universitas Airlangga Keywords: Political Economy of Business, Cultural Content Export, Cultural Policy, Marketing Strategy. Abstract: State-led development and synergy with chaebols have been the most prominent features of South Korean government since the dictatorship of Park Chung-Hee. Even after the new wave of democracy engulfed the country, this feature remained, albeit much less restrictive. These characteristics are also reflected in Korean cultural policy, which was also used as one of the main export engines since the 90s. Cultural content export, despite newly-established, has been tremendously profitable for both states and corporations in South Korea. It has consistently increased in export rate and sales in the last decade. However, in 2016, Chinese government announced ban for cultural content export from South Korea, making both government and corporations of South Korea were scrambling to look for a new market for its export. Hence, they started to enhance their export to Southeast Asian countries as the new lucrative market they can aim at. This paper aims to highlight the political-economy of Hallyu and underline the synergy between state’s cultural policy and corporations’ marketing strategy in Southeast Asian countries post-THAAD ban by China. In order to limit the research, it focuses on the expansion of Hallyu in Thailand and Indonesia post-THAAD ban. It employs a descriptive method to explain and validate the link between state policy and corporation’s marketing strategy. The findings show the correlation between THAAD ban and the increase of Hallyu expansion in Southeast Asia, as indicated by growing list of events in both Indonesia and Thailand. -

Media/Entertainment The golden age of video content The increasing search for content Overweight (Maintain) In just a short period of time, over-the-top (OTT) services have emerged as a key platform for the global media industry. In response, both traditional media companies, Industry Report such as Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS, CP: US$97.06) and Time Warner (NYSE: TWX, CP : US$100.47), and new media companies, such as Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX, CP : September 5, 2017 US$179.00) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN, CP: US$979.47), are now battling to source large amounts of content from outside providers. As media companies broaden their geographical footprint and turn to content to differentiate their platforms, licensed content, in addition to self-produc ed content, are becoming increasingly important. For example, Netflix is planning to spend W8tr on content alone next year. In our view, Mirae Asset Daewoo Co., Ltd. global competition to license content will play out for quite some time. [Media /Entertainment/Leisure ] We believe the battle for content will benefit video content producers. The proliferation of accessible OTT platforms has created new sources of content demand, Jeong -yeob Park presenting opportunities across different formats, sizes, and targets. We expect +822 -3774 -1652 content licensing to grow and a more diverse range of conten t to attract traffic. We [email protected] view this as another positive change for Korean content producers, which saw increased bargaining power following the introduction of general programming cable channels and the beginning of content exports. We believe some paralle ls can be drawn between the current situation and the 1990s, when the programming of externally-produced dramas was institutionalized in Korea.
