BY WILSON NEATE In the scorching British summer of 1976, with Roxy Music on vacation and with punk about to explode, Roxy guitarist Phil Manzanera and friends convened the art-rock supergroup 801. Featuring several rather musicianly musicians and one avowed non-musician - speaking mutually incomprehensible languages - this incarnation of the band was a short-lived, precarious alliance. However, the seeming irreconcilability of 801's constitutive elements was a source of uniquely creative tension throughout its fleeting, six-week existence. During that time, the band played just three gigs, the last of which was preserved on the 801 Live album, recorded in September 1976 and originally released the following month. Manzanera did continue the project in 1977, but not with this classic line-up. With Roxy Music, Manzanera played a key part in one of the most influential Twitter Updates and iconic British groups of the '70s, but he's always been especially proud of his work with 801. So much so that, with old bandmate and longtime 14 seconds' clip of Them Crooked associate Bill MacCormick, he's now assembled the definitive version of the Vultures (Grohl, Homme, Jones) is only album by the original 801, bundled with a completist-pleasing booklet and a second CD that features a revealing recording of the group's final dress http://blurt-online.com/news/view/2659/ rehearsal at Shepperton Studios.

Though he subsequently took a lengthy hiatus from rock song forms to develop his "ambient" sound (which would have an explosive impact on the development of techno, chillout and other electronic subgenres) and eventually became one of the most sought-after producers in music (hello, U2), Eno wrote some remarkable tunes during the first half of the '70s. Littered with skronky guitars, weirdly filtered synths and cicada-like drum machines, the tracks were an appropriately offbeat foundation for the man's droll, absurdist narratives.

A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange by Mark S. Tucker ([email protected] ). No self-respecting proghead can be without at least one 801 album (there are now six), and the original issue of this live gig tends to be the one that's most oft coveted, featuring, as it does, the ubiquitous Brian Eno flanking an all-star cast of progressive rock greats: Simon Phillips, Bill MacCormick, Francis Monkman, and Lloyd Watson, who opened for or sat in with a number of progrock groups (Bowie, Roxy, King Crimson, etc.) but here had the unlucky task of filling in for Robert Fripp's sizzling, never-to-be-equalled-or-topped, rock-out solo in the earlier studio version of Eno's Baby's on Fire. Watson, of course, didn't carry it off, as this disc shows, but acquitted himself well despite (because, well, who the hell can step into Fripp's shoes???). The 801 group was an extension of Manzanera's not very well known but great fusion group Quiet Sun, which quietly issued one marvelous LP and died, few realizing it also featured the perambulatory Eno, one of the 20th century's great musical figures…along with Fripp. Quiet Sun released in 1975 and died the same year, '76 seeing 801 rising from the ashes. Like Sun, it was a progfusion ensemble, and bassist Bill MacCormick—later of another underlauded nail-it-to-the-wall group, Random Hold—transferred over with Eno.

(2018): Brian Eno's Ambient 1: Music for Airports. Oxford Scholarship Online. Abstract: This study situates Eno’s ambient masterpiece, Music For Airports, within various avant-garde trends in order to underscore its multiple dimensions. In the manner of Satie, it aims to tint living situations without demanding that listeners give the album their full attention. In the manner of Cage, and with La Monte Young’s feel for the textures of individual tones, it arranges the activity of sounds outside traditional Euro-American musical conventions, and in a manner that can spark a kind of thoughtful reverie, thus bringing art into vital, possibly transformative contact with everyday life. Finally, like some of Steve Reich’s works, Music for Airports functions as a piece of conceptual art, facilitating sustained reflections on creativity, listening, and the overall ecology of human activity and meaning, including its technological variability. Be- cause the album has these three distinct dimensions, it requires “prismatic listening,” which switches between distinct modes of attention in the knowledge that these dimensions cannot be heard simultaneously. THE HISTORY OF THROUGHALGOLDEN!THIS MONTHLY ISSU MUSIC'S YEARS E:1973 TRIP STARRING..."We'vePINK FLOMIL'alwa s chit like a cult... BOBROLLINGBRUCEDAVIDLED ZEPPELINDYLAN BOWIE SPRINGSTEEN STONES BOBMILESVANGRAMNEIL MORRISONMARLEYYOUNG PARSONSDAVISV Welcome to 1973 THIS IS A year in which everyone seems to be saying goodbye. At the start of the year, Leonard Cohen comes to London to say that he is deeply troubled by the music business, and that he's planning a dignified exit. Later in the year, Neil Young says much the same. Brian Eno leaves Roxy, as Ronnie Lane does the Faces. David Bowie, meanwhile, apparently quits music altogether. Those that remain, however, reap some rich rewards. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who or our cover stars Pink Floyd have now all escaped their niches in the previous decade, to flourish in a new context. Zeppelin play to more people than ever before, duly making an enormous amount of money. Floyd do likewise, but are troubled by their conscience and by their past. For Floyd, the absence of Syd Barrett (and the mental unrest that contributed to it) is articulated in one of the most successful records of all time. Perhaps in homage to a man who was not there, the band fail to appear at the launch for The Dark Side Of The Moon. 1973 also brings dramatic new arrivals. The Wailers and their frontman Bob Marley have suffered hardships in the Jamaican music business, but now finally find a patron who will treat them fairly. In New York, the singer Bruce Springsteen is signed by John Hammond- the man who took a chance on Bob Dylan.
