  • The Wonderful World of Podcasts Page 1 of 5
The Wonderful World of Podcasts Page 1 of 5 INTRODUCTION: Michael Baumohl Introduces Jim Moslow QUESTION: Jim, tells us a little bit about your work background and your involvement with SCORE Naples. ANSWER: My professional work background includes over 35 years of senior management experience in manufacturing, product management, international service operations, telecommunications and information technology. I’ve been with SCORE Naples four years. There I serve as a business counselor and the Director of Technology. I am also an active member of SCORE’s National Technical Task Force which strives to improve e-learning through the application of technology. QUESTION: You’re here to talk to us today about podcasting. What is a podcast? ANSWER: Podcasts are digital media files (audio or video), which are produced in a series. You can subscribe to a series of files, or podcast, by using a piece of software called a podcatcher. Podcatchers are popular because they're designed for use with smartphones— and podcast listeners often tune in while driving, walking, or working out. Once you subscribe to a podcast, your podcatcher periodically checks to see if any new files have been published, and if so, automatically downloads them onto your computer or portable music player. QUESTION: Why are podcasts so popular? ANSWER: In 2001, Steve Jobs announced the original iPod, a music player that would make it possible for people to carry their entire music collections in their pockets. Over the next few years, the label “podcasting” based on the iPod, became a thriving mini-industry. Today, podcasting is growing at exponential rate.

10 STEPS TO A GREAT PODCAST 1. CREATE A VISION Today’s podcasts are inspiring people all over the world. From learning about How Stuff Works, to solving true crime mysteries, or telling some of the most bizarre stories you’ve ever heard, podcasting is taking the world by storm. They’re informative, inspiring, and captivating. By and large, they are effective and for a number of reasons. But podcasting is not for the faint of heart. It takes work (as you will see throughout this guide). And to push through the hard work in order to get to the fun part of podcasting, you need a vision for how you want your podcast to go, what you want it to accomplish, and why you want to do it. So right from the start there are some preliminary things that should be considered: 1. Clarify your purpose. Are you doing it for fun? Are you trying to make an impact in the world? Is it a marketing strategy for your business? Are you trying to make podcasting your career? Whatever your goal is, this will help carry you through the learning curve of podcasting and help you persevere through whatever challenges you might face. 2. Set your goals. Setting goals for your podcast will help you stay focused and maintain consistency. Some examples of goals for your podcast might be to reach 5000 downloads per episode, launch 10 episodes for each season, generate income from podcast ads, use your podcast to increase web traffic, or to podcast weekly for a year and evaluate the results.

In 1969, the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) developed an experimental network called ARPAnet to link together four supercomputing centers for military research. This network had the many and difficult design requirements that it had to be fast, reliable, and capable of withstanding a nuclear bomb destroying any one computer center on the network. From those original four computers, this network evolved into the sprawling network of millions of computers we know today as the internet. The internet itself is really a massive "network of networks." There is no central "Internet, Inc," to which you can connect.
