An often rejected, parodied and misinterpreted sub-genre of metal, the fierce death metal has nevertheless succeeded in garnering a significant following over the decades. Arriving in the 80s, the genre continues to evolve; from its early pursuit of the ultra-violent to its more recent incorporation of aspects from more mainstream genres. Let us look back at the origins of death metal. Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit. The Alice Cooper story is, first and foremost, an extraordinary tale of “split personality”. Like something straight out of “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, singer Vincent Furnier surrendered to the domination of showman Alice Cooper. But by his own admission, the man who always speaks of “Alice” in the third person in interviews remains a simple, completely normal guy in private, far from the stage where he enacts his excesses and provocations. Throughout a career stretching over 50 years, there is an evident streak of schizophrenia in his many stylistic changes. While we credit him with the invention of shock rock, he has ventured into almost every genre with varying degrees of success, from pop to nascent hard rock, with forays into heavy metal, new wave and industrial… Babymetal Metal Galaxy. BABYMETAL have revealed details of their upcoming brand new studio album “METAL GALAXY”, their first since 2016’s “METAL RESISTANCE”. Since then they have become the highest charting Japanese band ever in the UK Official Album Charts. Since the release of the last album, the band have had numerous highlights, breaking the all-time merch sales record at SSE Arena Wembley, and holding the honour of being the first Japanese band to headline the prestigious venue, as well as performing at Glastonbury, supporting RHCP on their huge arena run, opening for both METALLICA in South Korea and GUNS N’ ROSES in Japan, spending the summer in the US with KORN and STONE SOUR, and continuing their worldwide tour in 2018. Následující text zpracovává nejen jeho první projevy, ale i důležité milníky v čele s Black Sabbath, které metal formovaly. Chronologicky sestavuje obraz jeho zrodu a postupného rozvoje v další nekonečné množství subžánrů. Tyto odnože jsou nastíněny jak jejich charakteristikami, tak nejvýznamnějšími zástupci. Práce je do určité míry zaměřena i na vliv žen v tomto stylu. Proto se snaží nalézt stopy hudebnic či čistě ženských hudebních skupin v daných subžánrech, a na konci pátrání shrnout zjištěné poznatky. Despite their close economic relationship since 1965, their conflicting historic and political relationships and deep-seated prejudice against each other have continued. The Korean government’s official ban on the direct import of Japanese cultural products existed until 1997, but various kinds of Japanese cultural products, including popular music, found their way into Korea through various legal and illegal routes and influenced contemporary Korean popular culture. Since 1998, under Korea’s Open- Door Policy, legally available Japanese popular cultural products became widely consumed, especially among young Koreans fascinated by Japan’s quintessentially postmodern popular culture, despite lingering resentments towards Japan.

    LUND UNIVERSITY • CENTRE FOR EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN STUDIES “This was the reason I was born” Contextualizing Issues and Choices of a Japanese Woman Musician Author: Alessandra Cognetta Supervisor: Annika Pissin Master’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2017 Abstract This thesis investigates the Japanese music industry from a liberal feminist perspective, as academic literature rarely discusses Japanese music – especially niche genres like metal. After pinpointing a gap in the literature on the subject, and after outlining issues in the Japanese music industry, this study sheds light on the reasons that lead Japanese women musicians to thrive outside of major Japanese record companies. The direct experience of a Japanese power metal singer, who has worked both in her home country and in Europe, generates the main body of data. Specific aspects such as gender stereotypes, musical genres and language barrier are taken into account as parameters affecting women musicians’ choices. The analysis focuses on an in-depth semi- structured interview with the singer, to obtain her insights on these aspects and to inquire on her choices as an independent female musician in Japan. The aim of this article is to contextualize a specific case within the Japanese music scene, instead of generalizing the experience of a single female musician as applicable to all female musicians. The main findings of this research project highlight issues for further research: economic support for independent artists and the lack of inclusive spaces for female musicians.     The Journal of Specialised Translation Issue 35 – January 2021 Live music and translation: The case of performances involving singing Lucile Desblache, University of Roehampton ABSTRACT This article explores the multicultural and multilingual context of live music today in relation to translation, focusing primarily on a European context. A first section examines the complex relationship of music and translation, arguing that in many respects, music is a form of translation. The article then focuses on the case of vocal music and/in translation, before considering accessibility in relation to music and how it is understood in this article. Past and current traditions and expectations of translation in live music are discussed in the next section. Two more sections explore respectively contemporary audiences’ preferences, and artists’ engagement with their public, as well as the solutions they find to communicate with their audiences and convey the verbal content of their songs. The conclusion draws on the findings of these sections to emphasise the importance of lyrics translation in the live music scene. It also outlines the key role that music can play in translation, particularly in the cosmopolitan context of live musical events. Introduction The ways in which music has been produced, disseminated and consumed in the last fifty years have been evolving constantly and rapidly, particularly in the popular arena.
