GAME ONE RAIDERS FALL TO ‘DORES IN SEASON OPENER VANDERBILT 14 7 7 0 - 28 MURFREESBORO - Middle Tennessee’s season-opening matchup with in-state foe MIDDLE TENNESSEE 0 0 0 6 - 6 Vanderbilt didn’t go quite as planned for the Blue Raiders inside Floyd Stadium. Sept. 2, 2017 | Floyd Stadium | Murfreesboro, TN | 7:02 PM | A : 26,717 The Commodores (1-0) struck early and took the crowd of 26,717 out of the game, then hung on with solid defense to beat the Raiders (0-1) 28-6. “I’m just disappointed in how we played,” MT Head Coach Rick Stocks ll said. “There are some things that we saw that we might be able to expand on a li le bit with some personnel … but there’s not a whole lot of posi ve about this game. “We’ve got enough things to get corrected before we play again.” Vanderbilt was eff ec ve off ensively from its fi rst possession, though it wasn’t All- Southeastern Conference running back Ralph Webb who led the way. Junior quarterback Kyle Shurmur, who threw for just 113 yards against Middle Ten- nessee in 2016, was the driving force behind the Dores’ 14-0 lead at the end of the fi rst quarter that seemed to grab all of the momentum for the visi ng team. He completed 6-of-7 passes in the fi rst quarter for 124 yards and a touchdown, and fi nished the game with 296 yards on 20-of-28 passing with three scores. Webb, on the other hand, managed just 21 yards rushing in the fi rst quarter and fi nished with 49 on 24 a empts. It was a far cry from the 183 yards Vandy’s all- me leading rusher averaged on the ground against MT the past two seasons, though he also added 104 receiving yards.
