The North American Christian Convention ran from 1927 to 2018 when it changed to become Spire. These records include planning and research materials and materials relating to running the convention. Of special note are records relating to Leonard G. Wymore, the first executive director, and records of the various committees. In addition, the collection contains promotional items from most of the conventions. Administrative History: First held in 1927, the North American Christian Convention was a gathering of the independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ (“4 C’s”). As such, it was not a denominational meeting, but a meeting highlighted by discussions, exhibits, worship services, and preaching. Beginning in 1950, the convention was held annually until 2018, after which the convention changed to become Spire. Leonard G. Wymore was the first full-time convention director, with offices in Cincinnati, OH, beginning in 1963. Following Wymore were Rod Huron (convention director, 1986-1997), Dusty Rubeck (executive director, 1997-1999), Terry Wuske (managing director, 1998-2002), Allan Dunbar (executive director, 2002- 2009), and Larry Collins (managing director, 2002-2019). The convention has also historically had a committee, with women joining in the 1990s. The board of stewards was established in 1999. The convention has been held in conjunction with other similar meetings at times, including a long tenure with Bible Bowl, a youth Bible quiz competition. Arrangement: The collection was arranged by committees and other subjects by combining the boxes from the accession. Most series, and therefore most of the collection, are in chronological order. The collection contains seven series: Board of Stewards, Committees, Governance Documents, Planning, Promotion, Letters and Articles, and Subject Files. The Committees series contains five subseries: Executive Revised 06/09/2020 Committee, Continuation Committee, Convention Committee, Other Committees, and Convention Files. The Promotional Materials series contains three subseries: Convention Materials, Publications, and Other Publications. The Planning series is arranged alphabetically by folder title with the spec books starting with the year at the end of the series. The Other Committees subseries is arranged alphabetically by name of committee and then chronologically within the name. The Subject Files series is arranged in alphabetical order by folder title. All other series and subseries are arranged chronologically. Scope and Content Note: The records of the North American Christian Convention Executive Director are arranged in seven series: Board of Stewards, Committees, Governance Documents, Planning, Promotional Materials, Letters and Articles, and Subject Files. The Other Committees subseries spans 1956 to 2010 and includes undated material. This subseries includes information on many other committees relating to the convention. The Convention Files subseries spans 1927 to 1970 and includes undated material. In contains chronological files on the annual convention. The Governance Documents series spans 1998 to 2012 and contains governance documents for those years of the convention. The Planning Files series spans 1964 to 2013 and includes undated material. This series contains information used to plan the convention, including meeting information and “spec books.” The Promotional Materials series spans 1927 to 2017 and includes undated material, and the series is further divided into three subseries: Convention Materials, Publications, and Other Publications. The Convention Materials subseries spans 1927 to 2017 and includes undated materials. It contains publicity and promotional items and programs for the convention. The Publications subseries spans 1959 to 2015 and includes undated materials. This subseries contains publications about the NACC, including references in The Christian Standard, The Lookout, and The Update, the NACC publication. The Other Publications subseries spans 1959 to 2006 and includes undated material. It contains references in other publications not in the Publications subseries and clippings about the NACC. The Letters and Articles series spans 1946 to 2006 and includes undated material. It contains correspondence and articles pertaining to the convention. The Subject Files series spans 1926 to 2010 and includes undated material. It contains files on items relating to the convention that do not fit into other series.     LifeWay, Rick Warren, and the Son of God Dr. Randy White LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Pastor Rick Warren have teamed up with the New Age Catholics Mark Burnett and Roma Downey to produce “Son of God: The Life of Jesus in You.” This is a six-session “Bible study” for small groups. As a Southern Baptist who is concerned about the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention and LifeWay (wholly owned and controlled by the SBC), I want to write an in-depth critique of this resource. First, let me share an underlying concern with small group “Bible study” as it is most often seen today. Can we really call it Bible study when a participant would not have to bring a Bible? The Scriptures used are printed in the student’s book, devoid of context and often used out of context (as you will soon see). The contemporary small-group is a study of a celebrity pastor or teacher’s work. Only by a wild stretch of the imagination could the participant leave the session saying they had engaged in Bible study. The small-group Bible study is the equivalent of medical school students playing a game of Operation or engineers building a bridge using Legos. In years past, the church had small groups that would meet and study Christian authors, but it was called it a book circle. Bible study was when people brought their Bible and studied the Bible for content. This kind of study is almost non-existent in the purpose-driven, growth-oriented church.

    Rochester Area Bible Quizzing "The Answer is in the Question" Exactly what is Bible Quizzing? Quizzing is a Christian sport sponsored by Rochester Area Youth For Christ. It encourages young people to “hide God’s Word in their hearts”, as well as to develop the physical, mental, social, and spiritual areas of their lives. Each month quizzers study a specific number of verses from previously selected Books of the New Testament. After learning the material, the teams compete together by answering questions based on the passages. Two or three teams face off at one time. The teams are seated on pads facing a quizmaster. The quizmaster asks the questions, and the first person to jump off the chair has a chance to answer the question and score points for his or her team. Who can participate? Quiz teams are composed of 3 to 5 young people from a church. The teams compete against other teams in the same age bracket. We presently have two leagues, a Little League for fourth through sixth graders, and an “A/B” league for seventh through twelfth graders. At the parents' discretion, kids younger than fourth grade may quiz. Are there any awards? Trophies or ribbons are presented to the top quizzers in each league. Also, there are various opportunities to travel to quizzing tournaments. Did you say travel? Yes! As with other sports, various tournaments are held all over the country. Quizzers from our leagues are encouraged to make teams and participate in these tournaments. This year we participate in the Crown College Tournament in the Twin Cities and the World Bible Quiz Association Chicago Tournament in the Chicago suburbs.
