The study considers the teaching of speaking to Baptist laymen of the ages of nine through adulthood. It attempts to ascertain why Baptists feel that learning to speak is important, to whom speech instruction is given, to what extent the principles of public address are taught, in what manner speech principles are communicated, to what degree speech practice is provided, and by what method speaking is taught. The sources of the study include Training Union publi­ cations, correspondence with writers and officials of the Union, interviews with writers and officials of the organi­ zation, questionnaires from the twenty-four states which con­ duct a Southern Baptist Speakers? Tournament, records of the Baptist Sunday School Board, and the production script for an educational film sponsored by the Union. The Training Union published in its various periodicals numerous articles which dealt with speechmaking, some on discussion, and a few on public debate and parliamentary law. v It does not have, however, an organized plan for regularly presenting the principles of public address, as is evidenced by the fact that there have been no significant articles on speechmaking since 1951> and none on discussion since 1953. The Union has no study text which deals solely with the principles and practice of public address. However, it does have one text for adults which includes a chapter on speech- making, and some texts for juniors, intermediates, and young people briefly discuss the importance of learning to speak, how to prepare a talk, and parliamentary law. The main method whereby speech practice is provided is as follows. (l) Each member of a local union is assigned to one of two to four groups. (2) When a group is scheduled to conduct a weekly meeting each member is given a npart on the program” which usually consists of a short talk. (3) The individual who is to deliver a talk studies specified material from a Training Union periodical, especially the expository paragraphs which concern his subj'ect. He is encouraged to look beyond the periodical for additional information. (4) The speaker is to plan his speech carefully, then (5) deliver it extemporaneously before the union. In 1929 the leaders of the organization promoted problem-solving discussion as the method for conducting the weekly meeting of the newly constituted Adult Union. By 1935 vi they changed the meeting for adults into a symposium-forum because many Baptists were unable, because of poor educational background, or unwilling to plan effective problem-solving discussions. The Southern Baptist Speakers’ Tournament is a special training activity for Baptists of the ages of seventeen through twenty-four. Participants in this annual event pre­ pare an original six-minute speech based upon one of the several Baptist-centered subjects published annually by the Training Union, then take part in an elimination contest in the local church. The church winners go to an associational elimination, the associational winners to a state elimination, and the state winners to the Southwide finals. Because of the promotion it receives, plus the element of competition involved, the Southern Baptist Speakers’ Tournament probably produces the best speaking of any Union activity. The study seems to indicate that the Training Union has an effective* plan for training Baptist laymen to speak in the evangelistic, educational, and governmental activities of a Baptist congregation. INTRODUCTION The Constitution of the Southern Baptist Convention states: It is the purpose of the Convention to provide a general organization for Baptists in the United States and its territories for the promotion of Christian missions at home and abroad, and any other objects such as Christian education, benevo­ lent enterprises, and social services which it may deem proper and advisable for the furtherance of the kingdom of God. Baptists are careful to specify that the convention is only a denominational organization, not a comprehensively authoritative body, since they ”do not have . any eccle­ siastical organization covering a wide territory that can be 2 designated as ’The Baptist Church.’” To Baptists, a church is a ’’local, independent, self-governing organization,” while the term denomination ’’refers in a general sense to all mem­ bers of Baptist churches co-operating with the Southern 3 Baptist Convention.” Therefore, the convention is composed of Baptist congregations which voluntarily participate in Annual of the Southern Baptist Convention: 1956 (Nashville: The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, 1956), p. 22. 2 Austin Crouch, Bow Southern Baptists Do Their Work (Nashville: Broadman Press, 1951), p. 2. 3Ibid. 2 the promotion of missions, education, benevolent enterprises, and social services. The Baptist Training Union is one of the many educa­ tional organizations which Southern Baptists promote. Organized in 1895 as a Baptist Young PeopleTs Union,^ it has evolved from an inspirational prayer meeting for youth to a comprehensive educational project for all ages. No other Southern Baptist organization functions as the Training Union. Meeting each Sunday evening one hour before the worship service, its members are led by sponsors and officers to conduct the meeting themselves. This system of religious education is explained as follows: The basic method of the Training Union is described in the two words "individual participation." It seeks to lead all of its members to take part in all of its studies, all of its programs, and all of its activities. The things in which a Training Union member

Trulson Revised February, 2017 1 American Baptist International Ministries was formed over two centuries ago by Baptists in the United States who believed that God was calling them to work together “in one sacred effort” to make disciples of all nations. Organized in 1814, it is the oldest Baptist international mission agency in North America and the second oldest in the world, following the Baptist Missionary Society formed in England in 1792 to send William and Dorothy Carey to India. International Ministries currently serves more than 1,800 short- term and long-term missionaries annually, bringing U.S. and Puerto Rico churches together with partners in 74 countries in ministries that tell the good news of Jesus Christ while meeting human needs. This is a review of the missiology exemplified by American Baptist International Ministries that has both emerged from and helped to shape American Baptist life. 2 American Baptists are better understood as a movement than an institution. Whether religious or secular, movements tend to be diverse, multi-directional and innovative. To retain their character and remain true to their core purpose beyond their first generation, movements must be able to do two seemingly opposite things. They must adopt dependable procedures while adapting to changing contexts. If they lose the balance between organization and innovation, most movements tend to become rigidly institutionalized or to break apart. Baptists have experienced both. For four centuries the American Baptist movement has borne its witness within the mosaic of Christianity.

The theology of such a denomination is practiced organically by the people and is seldom articulated by the academy. Thus one cannot find a well articulated theological understanding of what ordination means for the individual and the community in the Baptist context. A synthesis of Geertz’s thick description, Lindbeck’s approach to doctrine, and McClendon’s understandings of speech-acts and conviction will offer a methodology through which one can articulate a theology of ordination. In doing so, we will find that the “call” and a relationship with a congregation are essential for ordination to occur. Such a theology will suggest that one is changed through ordination, and this change is relational in nature. The Catholic concept of Sacramental Consciousness offers a way to articulate the community’s awareness of the pastor’s relational change while at the same time maintaining the egalitarian nature of a Baptist community.

    CHURCH HISTORY LITERACY Lesson 23 Baptist History – Part 1 By Mark Lanier INTRODUCTION Ever heard of the Southern Baptist Convention? Of course! It’s the United States’ second largest Christian denomination (second to the Roman Catholic Church). How about the National Baptist Convention, USA or the Baptist Association of America? The American Baptist Churches USA? The American Baptist Association (Landmark Baptists)? Maybe the Baptist Union of Great Britain or the Baptist Union of Sweden? There is the Association of Regular Baptist Churches in Canada (but there is no Association of Irregular Baptist Churches!) as well as the Canadian Convention of Southern Baptist Churches. In fact, there are well over 50 separate groups of Baptist Churches in the United States alone. One of every five people in the United States is estimated to attend a Baptist Church or affiliate him/herself as a “Baptist.”1 Consider the diversity of the famous people who are Baptist. We have Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Harry Truman, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, and Vice President Al Gore. We have the world famous athletes Jim Brown and George Foreman. Hollywood has seen many Baptists including Lucille Ball and Kevin Costner. As for business, James Cash Penney (yes, we know him by his initials, “J. C. Penney”) and J. L. Kraft of macaroni and cheese fame were Baptists. How about some more historical Baptists of note like John Bunyan or Charles Spurgeon? Also, those greats of the 20th century including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Billy Graham (who extends into the 21st century!)? Now, one may fairly ask, “But how could all those people be the same religion?” One might also wonder why there are so many different “Baptist” groups? The answers to those questions are hopefully contained in today’s lessons.

I used the list of resolutions passed by the Southern Baptist Convention to trace the history and development of Southern Baptist thought on the subject of religious freedom. I consulted outside scholarly works to examine the history of the Baptist tradition and how that history has influenced modern day arguments. I compared these texts to the wording of the Mississippi bill. After conducting this research, I found that the Southern Baptist tradition and ethical thought are reflected in the wording of the Mississippi bill. I found that the large percentage of the Mississippi population comprised of Southern Baptists holds a large amount of political power in the state, and this power was used to pass a law reflecting their ethical positions.

You have said it many times - or maybe you said, I’m a Southern Baptist.” When you make that statement you identify yourself with a major religious den- omination; a large denomination and an old one; a denomination that practices baptism by immersion, and teaches that "if you are once saved you are always saved." That is about all some people know about the people called Baptists. It is understandable that unsaved people and even members of other denominations do not usually know much more than this about Baptists, but it is disturbing to find that many who profess to be Baptists have only a value understanding of basic Baptist distinctives. Baptists have no creeds, no bishop to dictate policies to the local congregation, and no conference to impose its will on the autonomous local church However, many "Confessions of Faith" have been publishing. Any Baptist group can draw up and publish its confessions of faith at any time. In 1963, the Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in Kansas City, adopted a statement entitled? "The Baptist Faith and message." This statement sets forth some of the basic teachings which most Baptists believe. This statement is recommended for study and will be used with a selection of other works in this brief study. The sincere Christian should study the Scriptures regularly. We should also study Christian doctrines, church administration, and other related materials. All Scripture quoted in this study is from the King James Version of the Bible unless otherwise noted.
