Ryston News May 2017 by Pam Taylor Club Captain: Roger Sloper At last - some rain to help the course. Just hope it knows when to stop. The greens are now seeding so they will be a little slow for the next week or two.

Wednesday the 7th June is the second round of the Barnard with the second rounds of the Myhill & Cullington on the 18th June. Good luck to them and hope they all make it to the next round.

Thanks to Bryan Parker for organising the working party for clearing dead branches from the first and second. If members come across any branches when waiting to play their shot it would be helpful to put them behind the nearest tree for collection.

Now the greens have softened up don’t forget your pitch marks - we all make them if we land on the greens.

Most of the work on the irrigation system is now complete - Thanks to Mick. Peter and Tiff are working well together along with Keven who is keeping the rough in check.

Finally, there is a list of social golf dates on the notice board for you to put in your diary. They are a bit of fun and inexpensive so please support them.

Roger Sloper Club Captain Ladies Captain: Maggie Ward This month’s catch is a beautiful red coral trout from the Indian Ocean off Mauritius, not a golf course in sight!

May has brought some challenging weather for golf and the course. The much needed rain eventually came and caused the Irene Mott competition to be postponed as the course was waterlogged. The competition will now be played on 14th June.

The highlight of the month was undoubtedly the friendly match away at which was halved. I cant remember the last time we didn’t lose this away fixture. Well done to all who played in the usual windy coastal conditions.

The Spring Open proved to be a great success confirming that Ladies certainly know how to stage an event! All of our visitors thoroughly enjoyed themselves in spite of the rain which fell all day. Many thanks to the greens staff who worked really hard to keep the course open. There was a terrific atmosphere in the club with everyone working enthusiastically together to ensure our visitors had a really positive experience. Thanks to all the ladies who helped and also to Tonya and her team for the excellent catering.

Well done to all of the ladies who continue to support the social events, the 3 club competition is next so please sign up asap. News Flash Hazel Hancock a former ladies member has Maggie recently passed away. Senior’s Captain: Graham Child

At the time of writing there have been two friendly matches this month, both at home against Richmond Park (3-3) and King’s Lynn (L4-2). May fixtures will be completed against (H) and Middleton (A).

(Pam Taylor) Bees County Championship at Royal Cromer GC onFriday 12th May After a very windy practice round on Weds 3rd May, Tiff and Ann thought they had got it covered. What they didn’t foresee was Tiff taken ill on the Friday and having to take 2 days off work and still looked like she should be elsewhere on the day of the championship. The first day was 36 holes and they were defending the Phillip Oppenheim Trophy. The greens were fast and hard. Tiff in respect to her usual abilities didn’t play well, she was 14 over, but pulled it all back with 1 over par in the afternoon. This was the swarm of bees that settled in the tree Although Ann felt she didn’t play well in the morning Tiff did on the 7th - photo taken by our new greenkeeper qualify for the final 16 knockout on the Saturday.
