Vous y retrouverez les textes et illustrations des 18 communications faites durant l’année, ainsi que les relations concernant le colloque Le Printemps de l’Académie (« L’entreprise aujourd’hui en France »), le dîner débat (« Zone euro : comprendre les désordres pour guider les réformes institutionnelles »), le voyage (du côté de Reims, Laon et Jouarre, d’où la reproduction du baptistère de la crypte Saint-Paul à Jouarre sur la couverture de ces Mémoires 2017), et quelques informations sur la vie de notre Académie. Notre Académie continue ainsi d’offrir, avec la collaboration de tous ses membres et l’aide toujours précieuse des Amis de l’Académie, des prestations qui répondent à la fois à sa mission et aux attentes de tous ceux qui suivent ses activités : rendre compte de la diversité d’intérêts et de préoccupations propres à notre époque dans le souci de nous informer et nous instruire les uns les autres. Il nous appartient de respecter les objectifs qui furent fixés aux académies il y a plus de trois siècles, et en même temps de renouveler notre mode de fonctionnement pour ancrer au mieux notre institution dans son temps. Nous nous préoccupons également de restaurer notre délicieux jardin, aussi vieux que nos murs, grâce aux compétences horticoles de certains de nos membres. L’an prochain nous serons en mesure de vous rendre compte de l’état des travaux. Nous avons eu malheureusement à déplorer le décès d’un de nos membres les plus éminents, Pierre Gillardot, membre très actif de notre Académie depuis plus de vingt ans, géographe très connu dans le monde universitaire, et mélomane des plus distingués, qui présidait la section Agriculture. L’an prochain nous aurons 210 ans d’une existence officielle, en réalité beaucoup plus si l’on veut bien se souvenir qu’existait déjà à Orléans à la fin du XVIIIème siècle une Société royale d’Agriculture de la généralité d’Orléans, et que le médecin Antoine Petit exerçait au n°5 de la rue qui porte son nom, et où nous siégeons toujours et cultivons notre jardin. Philae se posa sur la comète en novembre 2014, réalisant une première mondiale. Les résultats fournis par Rosetta montrent que les comètes ont pu jouer un rôle important dans l’origine de la vie sur Terre. Abstract Rosetta, a space probe built by the European Space Agency, was launched on March 2004. Along with Philae, its lander module, Rosetta performed a detailed study of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. On August 2014, the spacecraft reached the comet and performed a fruitful series of measurements. On November 2014, Philae achieved the first landing on a comet. On September 2016, the Rosetta spacecraft ended its mission by hard-landing on the comet. The Rosetta mision provided very interesting results for astrobiology. Sur Terre, le passage de la matière à la vie se fit dans l'eau, il y a environ 4 milliards d'années, avec des systèmes moléculaires carbonés capables d'auto reproduction et d'évolution. Certaines de ces molécules carbonées furent élaborées dans l’atmosphère à partir de gaz (méthane, monoxyde de carbone, dioxyde de carbone) soumis à différentes formes d'énergie (décharges électriques, rayonnement UV ou cosmique, chaleur). CAVITY Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities drive accelerators around the world, TECHNOLOGY transferring energy efficiently from high-power radio waves to beams of charged particles. Behind the march to higher SRF-cavity performance is the TESLA Technology Neutrinos for peace Collaboration (p35), which was established in 1990 to advance technology for a linear Feebly interacting particles electron–positron collider. Though the linear collider envisaged by TESLA is yet ALICE’s dark side to be built (p9), its cavity technology is already established at the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser at DESY (a cavity string for which graces the cover of this edition) and is being applied at similar broad-user-base facilities in the US and China. Accelerator technology developed for fundamental physics also continues to impact the medical arena. Normal-conducting RF technology developed for the proposed Compact Linear Collider at CERN is now being applied to a first-of-a-kind “FLASH-therapy” facility that uses electrons to destroy deep-seated tumours (p7), while proton beams are being used for novel non-invasive treatments of cardiac arrhythmias (p49). Meanwhile, GANIL’s innovative new SPIRAL2 linac will advance a wide range of applications in nuclear physics (p39). Detector technology also continues to offer unpredictable benefits – a powerful example being the potential for detectors developed to search for sterile neutrinos to replace increasingly outmoded traditional approaches to nuclear nonproliferation (p30).

None of us ever sees the I whole picture. We form a construct in our minds from a few emotionally salient incidents—the ones salient to us. We connect these dots. The longer we have known the person, the more the salient incidents stand out. The more important the person has been to our lives, the less we want to rethink, for that could be unsettling. The lazy part of our mind is content to let our mental picture rest safely where it is. I began to get a rounder picture of my teacher and colleague Ed Frieman during his memorial service at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. There I realized how much I had missed. Different people saw different facets of his life. It was richer than I thought, and I thought I knew him well. The historical Frieman began to emerge in fuzzy outline. Yet his memorial service did not tell me what I now wish I had known. I began to feel that even together we, the ones asked to speak, could never see the whole arc of Ed Frieman’s uncommon journey through life. We saw his world as we saw him, and the important thing is to see his world as he saw it, his life as he lived it.

Nicolò Isouard (1773-1818) is considered Malta’s national composer. After studies in France and Naples, he returned to his homeland, where from 1794 to 1798 he was an aspiring composer, and employee of the Order of Malta. In 1994 a collection of thirty-three autographs of hitherto unknown sacred music by Isouard appeared at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and I recognised the importance of these manuscripts. My intentions are to provide a précis on the Order, as the sovereign entity ruling Malta at the time, and the sacred music composed for them in their great Conventual Church in Valletta – now St John’s Co-Cathedral. The thesis will provide the background to Isouard’s early career and a complete edition and commentary of all of his sacred music, including additional works found during the research process, and a catalogue of his stage works.
