Through an exploration of voice, lyricism, kinesthetic performance, instrumentality and visual aesthetics, this course examines the “world wide underground” of black women’s sonic cultures, and it re-interrogates pop music subculture theories through the intersecting prisms of race, gender, class and sexuality. It considers the ways that black women musicians operate as socio- political and cultural intellectuals, and it reads their work as historically-situated cultural texts that resonate in multiple contexts. Throughout the semester, we will explore the ways in which black women culture workers have stylized and innovated disruptive and iconic performance practices within the context of American popular music culture, from the postbellum era through the present day. Part of the aim of this course is to trace the tensions between the enormous influence and ubiquity of the black female singing voice in globalized popular cultures and the ways in which a range of entertainers have nonetheless negotiated eccentric and “obscure” musical gestures that signaled and affirmed the existence of resistant musical aesthetics in the face of panopticism. -

Inside Out Simply The Best WORKSHEET A Anna Mae Bullock was born in 1) ________ , on November 26th, 1939. She lived with her grandmother in Nutbush, Tennessee until her grandmother died, in 3) ________ . Anna Mae then moved to St. Louis to live with her mother. She became a regular at a nightclub called Club Manhattan, where she met Ike Turner, who was lead singer for a band called the Kings of Rhythm. Anna started singing with the band and when she was twenty, she recorded 5) ________ , which reached the Top 40 in 1959. She moved to Los Angeles with Ike and he changed her name to 7) ________ . They got married in 1961. In 1969, after years of touring, Ike and Tina teamed up with producer Phil Spector and recorded 9) ________ . It was quite successful in the U.S. but more successful in Europe. More hits followed, but Ike’s behaviour was growing more and more violent towards Tina. She left him in 1976 and in 11) ________ they got divorced. Tina agreed to let Ike keep everything they had earned during their marriage, so she was now free but broke. The first few years of her solo career were difficult, although once again she had more success in Europe. Her big break came in 13) ________ . Bus Tours September 2021—April 2022 “TO TRAVEL IS TO LIVE” Hans Christian Andersen Page 1 COVID-19 SAFETY PROCEDURES Glory Tours has implemented additional safety measures due to COVID-19 on all future bus tours. Below are outlined the new additional procedures implemented on all future bus tours, until further notice. Effective July 26, 2021 • Face masks are MANDATORY for ALL clients attending bus tours, while on the bus and/or if Glory Tour’s vendors require it at the tour venue. Most business have lifted their mask requirements though, as there is no longer a mandatory mask requirement in Florida, EX- CEPT for public transportation, (planes, trains and buses) and is STILL mandatory on all public transportation. You will not be able to board the bus without a face mask. • All tour guides are required to wear face mask. • Additional cleaning measures are in place to clean the bus before, during and after each bus tour. This will include cleaning handrails and other high-touched surface areas after clients disembark and before re-loading the bus. • All day bus tours will now have a maximum of 53, instead of the previ- ous maximum of 45 people unless there is a limited capacity with a Glory Tour’s vendor. • There will be hand sanitizer available on all bus tours. • Glory Tours is also working with all of their vendors to ensure they have implemented additional safety measures at each tour destination and/or venue. • Please do not attend a bus tour if you are not feeling well.
