Aucoin, Kevyn (1962-2002) by Linda Rapp Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Make-up artist Kevyn Aucoin has been called a genius in his field. He worked with many of the most prominent stars in the fashion and entertainment industries and authored three books about make-up. He believed that beauty was empowering, as it raised women's self-esteem. A victim of homophobia in his youth, Aucoin also became a vigorous activist for gay rights. Aucoin was the oldest of the four adopted children of Isidore Aucoin, a telephone-company manager, and Thelma Melancon Aucoin, a homemaker. He was born February 14, 1962, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and became a member of the Aucoins' Lafayette, Louisiana, household about a month later. Aucoin recalled that his mother encouraged his creativity when he was a child. By the age of eleven he developed a fascination with make-up. His first subject was his younger sister, Carla, whom he made up to look like models in fashion magazines. He continued experimenting with the techniques of make-up on both of his sisters and other friends. Aucoin never had any formal training in make-up, which he considered an advantage because it allowed him to explore and take chances. At an early age, Aucoin became aware that he was gay. The realization made him feel like an outsider in his conservative town, but he never attempted to hide his orientation. His family came to accept his sexuality. His parents eventually founded the first chapter of P-FLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) in Lafayette, served as the group's southern regional directors for seven years, actively lobbied for gay rights, and counseled gay and lesbian teens.

Celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal visited The Early Show to show how to get yourself looking great without having your face melt off in the summer heat! And if you're wearing foundation, it can turn into a greasy, slick mess, leaving your skin looking oily, streaky, and patched with clumps of makeup. So can you get your skin looking dewy and beautiful without having the heat melt it off? The secret, says Mally, is to use primer and a powder foundation. The primer will lock moisture into your skin, and provide a smooth surface to apply foundation on; the powder foundation will cover your skin to even it out and make it look glowy without risking melting (since it's oil free) Directions: 1) Apply the primer all over an already cleansed and moisturized face and allow to sink in skin for one minute. 2) Apply a powder foundation with a brush in a circular motion buffing it into the skin. This works the best because it gives a seamless natural finish that doesn't look like makeup. It also combats shine, and it's an all-in-one foundation & powder application! • Alvin Ailey Dancers Spill Their Beauty Secrets By: Cheryl Wischhover
October 9th 2014 Alvin Ailey Dancers Spill Their Beauty Secrets By: Cheryl Wischhover Sure dancers do incredible things with their bodies, but they also have to do awesome things with their hair and makeup. Their entire look, from head to toe, tells a non-verbal story on stage. And sweating, jumping, sliding, lifting, and spinning around makes for a unique set of beauty challenges. I recently had the privilege of watching the Alvin Ailey dancers in New York City rehearse a piece for their new season, where they did things like jump onto their partners’ shoulders and slide across the floor on their bellies. A common direction I heard was, “Move more frenetically!” Afterwards, I sat down with two slightly sweaty yet incredibly welcoming members of the company, Linda Celeste Sims and Belen Pereyra, to talk to them about the products they swear by and the beauty tips they’ve picked up over the years. If it stays put for them, you can be sure it’ll see you through your busiest day. Linda, 38, has been a professional dancer for 21 years, with Ailey for 19. She is a self-professed beauty junkie and taught herself how to do her own makeup thanks to tips she picked up from makeup artists along the way. She also swears by the late makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin’s now-iconic book, Making Faces. Belen, 26, on the other hand, calls herself “laid back” when it comes to makeup but “being in this company has pushed me to want to learn a little more.” EYES Don’t be afraid of a paint-by-numbers approach.

Serrano* Ateneo De Manila University Pampanga State Agricultural University [email protected] Abstract: This paper explores on the discourse of makeup in the Philippines and its implications on the ideals or standards of beauty in the country. It examines the language of an online community of makeup enthusiasts and how they negotiate and construct the meaning of beauty. These constructions of ideals are products of the combination of the members’ diverse backgrounds and the real-time and interactive nature of the internet, along with its wide reach and mobility. Such factors create a specialized language that enable the community to interact with each other more effectively, creating a community of practice (CoP) founded on common interest. Thus, along with the uncovering of the definition of beauty, it also attempts to unravel new forms of language that are characteristic of the CoP. The corpus of the study is composed of online interactions among members of the CoP, along with individual *Jaimee Marie B.
