Much inclosure of Common Land, Open Fields and Moor Land (or Waste), formerly farmed collectively by the residents on behalf of the Lord of the Manor, had taken place by the 18th century, but the uplands of County Durham remained largely unenclosed. Inclosures, to consolidate land-holdings, divide the land (into Allotments) and fence it off from other usage, could be made under a Private Act of Parliament or by general agreement of the landowners concerned. In the latter case the Agreement would be Enrolled as a Decree at the Court of Chancery in Durham and/or lodged with the Clerk of the Peace, the senior government officer in the County, so may be preserved in Quarter Sessions records. In the case of Parliamentary Enclosure a Local Bill would be put before Parliament which would pass it into law as an Inclosure Act. The Acts appointed Commissioners to survey the area concerned and determine its distribution as a published Inclosure Award. -

Nicola Martin Date of Submission: 24th September 2018 This thesis is submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Humanities University of Stirling 2 3 Abstract This dissertation examines militarisation in Scotland and North America from the Jacobite Uprising of 1745-46 to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War in 1775. Employing a biographical, case study approach, it investigates the cultural paradigms guiding the actions and understandings of British Army officers as they waged war, pacified hostile peoples, and attempted to assimilate ‘other’ population groups within the British Empire. In doing so, it demonstrates the impact of the Jacobite Uprising on British imperialism in North America and the role of militarisation in affecting the imperial attitudes of military officers during a transformative period of imperial expansion, areas underexplored in the current historiography. It argues that militarisation caused several paradigm shifts that fundamentally altered how officers viewed imperial populations and implemented empire in geographical fringes. Changes in attitude led to the development of a markedly different understanding of imperial loyalty and identity. Civilising savages became less important as officers moved away from the assimilation of ‘other’ populations towards their accommodation within the empire. Concurrently, the status of colonial settlers as Britons was contested due to their perceived disloyalty during and after the French and Indian War. ‘Othering’ colonial settlers, officers questioned the sustainability of an ‘empire of negotiation’ and began advocating for imperial reform, including closer regulation of the thirteen colonies. -

Minutes of the Meeting held on 23 November 2020 & Matters Arising The minutes of the meeting held on 23 November 2020 were agreed as a true and accurate record. Cllr John Robinson requested a report on how much had been allocated for each county ward in the AAP area. This information will be brought to next board meeting in March which will be the year end meeting. Declarations of Interest/ Meeting Etiquette/ New Ways of Working Everyone was reminded of the meeting etiquette. Countywide Partner Issues Custody Briefing Sharon Caddell and Gary Ridley delivered a joint presentation in relation to the new centralised custody facility. -

Spennymoor Area Action Partnership Area Annual Review 2013/14 Spennymoor AAP – Annual Review 2013/14 Foreword from Alan Smith, Outgoing Spennymoor AAP Chair I would like to thank everyone associated with the Spennymoor Area Action Partnership for contributing to another excellent year in moving forward and trying to make a real difference in the AAP area. Having been given a clear steer on the need to continue with the key priorities of Children & Young People and Employment and Job Prospects, there has been a real drive and energy to succeed. The major occasion of our year, held in November, was the ‘Your Money, Your Area, Your Views’ event. The event provided the opportunity for members of our communities to vote on projects they wanted to receive funding, to vote on the AAP priorities for the 2014/15 financial year and to have their say on the future budget for Durham County Council (DCC). Overall the event was a great success with over 900 people attending on the day. The event also showed how committed the people of our area are to supporting and improving the community they live and work in. Taking community cohesion one step further, it was great to see that the community engagement processes that have been put in place by DCC (AAPs being pivotal in this) were a key element of the LGC Council of The Year award given to DCC recently. A major role in DCC achieving this accolade was a full day of assessment by an independent panel and for me it was a real boost that our partnership was selected to be part of this judging day. -

The Editors do not doubt that these will prove especially interesting to Derbyshire people. In Volume V they hope to print further instalments of town registers in the shape of those of St. Michael's and also some village registers. It will be noticed that St. Alkmund's register begins at the earliest possible date, 1538, but of the remainder, two do not start till the seventeenth century and one, that of Quarndon, synchronizes with the passing of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act. 1379092 It will be convenient to give here a list of the Derby- shire parishes of which the Registers have been printed in this series: Volume I. Review of Community Governance in the Unparished Area of Durham City carried out by Durham County Council Final Recommendations (No Parishing Arrangements) On 26 October 2011, the County Council approved terms of reference for the conduct of a Community Governance Review in the area of Durham City. The terms of reference were published on 1 November and included the terms of the petition which had been received from residents requesting the establishment of a town council. Although the petition was not compliant with the legislation the Council decided to undertake the review. On 21 st March 2012, the Council approved Draft Recommendations for a second period of consultation with Durham. This draft can be accessed at www.durham.gov.uk/communitygovernance On 25 July 2012, the Council approved a further consultation of the areas of Aykley Vale, Priory Road and Dryburn Park to request whether the residents of these areas would prefer to be either simply parished, or to join Framwellgate Moor Parish Council. The Review The Council is carried out this review under the Local Government Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 (‘the Act’). It was known to the Council that there was a wish in the area by some residents to have the review with a view to establishing parish council arrangements. The review was however delayed whilst the Council was waiting for the Local Government Boundary Commission for England recommendations in relation to electoral arrangements for County Durham, following Local Government Reorganisation in 2009. The review was commenced before final recommendations were published by the Boundary Commission in order to enable the Council to put in place any electoral arrangements for any parish council established by the review in time for the County Council elections on 2 May 2013. -

The nomination of Councillor M Wright was Moved by Councillor M Wilson, Seconded by Councillor O Edwards Resolved That Councillor M Wright be elected Chair of the Council for the remainder of the 2016/17. Councillor Wright signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office. Councillor M Wright in the Chair 17/66 APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies for absence were received from Councillors E Hull, T Wilson and County Councillor D Bell. 17/67 DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interest in relation to any item of business on the agenda. 17/68 REPRESENTATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC There were no representations from the public. 17/69 POLICE REPORT The Clerk informed the Council that he had followed up concerns expressed at the previous meeting regarding police presence at meetings and the absence of a police report. A position statement had been circulated to all Councillors via the Clerk, from the Chief Inspector for the area following the representations. The Parish Council expressed their disappointment with the stance that had been taken, particularly with regards to the provision of a report and felt that the issue should be escalated further to the Police and Crime Commissioner. -

Their records document campaigns, international congresses and other meetings, committees, finances, lectures and other programs, literary prizes awarded, membership, publications, and social events over several decades. Call Number: Manuscript Collection MS-03133 Language: The records are primarily written in English with sizeable amounts in French, German, and Spanish, and lesser amounts in numerous other languages. Non-English items are sometimes accompanied by translations. Note: The Ransom Center gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which provided funds for the preservation, cataloging, and selective digitization of this collection. The PEN Digital Collection contains 3,500 images of newsletters, minutes, reports, scrapbooks, and ephemera selected from the PEN Records. An additional 900 images selected from the PEN Records and related Ransom Center collections now form five PEN Teaching Guides that highlight PEN's interactions with major political and historical trends across the twentieth century, exploring the organization's negotiation with questions surrounding free speech, political displacement, and human rights, and with global conflicts like World War II and the Cold War. LANDSCAPE CHARACTER THE NORTH PENNINES The North Pennines The North Pennines The North Pennines Countryside Character Area County Boundary Key characteristics • An upland landscape of high moorland ridges and plateaux divided by broad pastoral dales. • Alternating strata of Carboniferous limestones, sandstones and shales give the topography a stepped, horizontal grain. • Millstone Grits cap the higher fells and form distinctive flat-topped summits. Hard igneous dolerites of the Great Whin Sill form dramatic outcrops and waterfalls. • Broad ridges of heather moorland and acidic grassland and higher summits and plateaux of blanket bog are grazed by hardy upland sheep. • Pastures and hay meadows in the dales are bounded by dry stone walls, which give way to hedgerows in the lower dale. • Tree cover is sparse in the upper and middle dale. Hedgerow and field trees and tree-lined watercourses are common in the lower dale. • Woodland cover is low. Upland ash and oak-birch woods are found in river gorges and dale side gills, and larger conifer plantations in the moorland fringes. • The settled dales contain small villages and scattered farms. Buildings have a strong vernacular character and are built of local stone with roofs of stone flag or slate. • The landscape is scarred in places by mineral workings with many active and abandoned limestone and whinstone quarries and the relics of widespread lead workings. • An open landscape, broad in scale, with panoramic views from higher ground to distant ridges and summits. • The landscape of the moors is remote, natural and elemental with few man made features and a near wilderness quality in places. -
