  • LIBERTY UNIVERSITY Master's Thesis the M26 Pershing
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY Master’s Thesis The M26 Pershing: America’s Forgotten Tank - Developmental and Combat History Author : Reader : Supervisor : Robert P. Hanger Dr. Christopher J. Smith Dr. David L. Snead A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts In the Liberty University Department of History May 11, 2018 Abstract The M26 tank, nicknamed the “General Pershing,” was the final result of the Ordnance Department’s revolutionary T20 series. It was the only American heavy tank to be fielded during the Second World War. Less is known about this tank, mainly because it entered the war too late and in too few numbers to impact events. However, it proved a sufficient design – capable of going toe-to-toe with vaunted German armor. After the war, American tank development slowed and was reduced mostly to modernization of the M26 and component development. The Korean War created a sudden need for armor and provided the impetus for further development. M26s were rushed to the conflict and demonstrated to be decisive against North Korean armor. Nonetheless, the principle role the tank fulfilled was infantry support. In 1951, the M26 was replaced by its improved derivative, the M46. Its final legacy was that of being the foundation of America’s Cold War tank fleet. Contents Introduction………………………………………………………………………………………..1 Chapter 1. • {PDF} Cutthroats: the Adventures of a Sherman Tank Driver in the Pacific
CUTTHROATS: THE ADVENTURES OF A SHERMAN TANK DRIVER IN THE PACIFIC PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Robert Dick | 272 pages | 25 Apr 2006 | Presidio Press | 9780891418849 | English | New York, United States Cutthroats: The Adventures of a Sherman Tank Driver in the Pacific PDF Book This page book covers the tanks used on Iwo Jima and I have to say, it is a pretty awesome book. Most of the book is just boring. Who'd have thought that tankers would voluntarily go out on infantry patrols. With the Japanese deeply entrenched and determined to die rather than surrender, Robert Dick and his fellow soldiers quickly realized that theirs would be a war fought inch by bloody inch—and that their Sherman tanks would serve front and center. Anyway, from writing this section, it becomes very clear there is one very prolific writer who has spread truth about the Sherman, and done it in a hell of a lot of books. I have read an awful lot of these books, and I am still working to acquire more. Dick had a much different experience than his Army comrades in Europe, and surprisingly from his Marine cousins in the pacific! There are several good books covering Armor used in the Pacific, and this book is a great companion to any of them, you will likely find higher resolution versions of photos the others books only had bad low-resolution versions in them. It follows Patton and his various commands through the whole war, and has many interesting pictures I have not seen before. Cooper promises much but delivers little.

WAR-WINNER: A RE-APPRAISAL OF THE M4 “SHERMAN” TANK IN WORLD WAR II by Kevin D. Smith A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in History Middle Tennessee State University 2013 Thesis Committee: Dr. Amy Sayward Dr. Bren Martin I dedicate this work to the veterans, both civilian and military, of the M4 tank. May your experience and sacrifice in the Second World War serve as an example to future generations in the preservation of liberty. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Amy Sayward for her kindness, patience, and guidance in producing this work and in giving me a chance to fulfill a goal. She gave me a second chance when I did not deserve it and represents the best qualities of a teacher. I would also like to thank Dr. Bren Martin for his willingness to assist me in this process even though we had never worked together before. I would also like to thank my mother, Cathi, for never doubting that I could do this. Most importantly, I would like to thank my wife, Jenny, who supported, encouraged, and enabled me to finish my goal. She believed in me even when I did not believe in myself. Finally to my son, Alex, I pray that my study of the past makes me a better father to guide you to a better future. iii ABSTRACT The M4 tank was one of the principal armored vehicles used by the United States during World War II. • The Complete Adventures of Coffin Kirk by Arch Whitehouse
The Complete Adventures of Coffin Kirk By Arch Whitehouse Vultures Vortex Flying Aces 10/37 Out of the pall of fog that curtained the trackless Atlantic roared a sleek Northrop—and no stranger pair of flyers had ever been seen than the men who manned it. One was tight-lipped Brian Kirk whose “dead pan” had won him the name “Coffin.” The other was a burly, stoop-shouldered mechanic— a forbidding, animal- like figure. His hair-matted hands bore the strength of cold steel, and Fate had decreed that they soon would be drenched with blood. DOWN the main runway of the Gatwick Airport raced a silver monoplane. Once in the air, it banked sharply over the Lorenz blind landing lorry and snarled away toward London. A single beam of light from a rotating beacon touched it just before it was lost in the leaden clouds—revealed the stark lines of an American Northrop 2-E service-type ship bearing a strange insignia on its side. Two British mechanics in cream-linen smocks watched the plane as it hurtled away. There was frank admiration in their eyes. But as the boom of the 750 Cyclone gradually filtered out, their expressions turned to plain awe. Neither spoke. There was that unmistakable air of men waiting for someone else to open the conversation. “Rum couple, eh, Edgar?” said the first finally. He had a clipped accent. “Rather! That mechanic lad, anyway. Never seen an uglier man in my life,” replied the other, staring at the “Incoming Aircraft” report. “These American sportsmen chaps know the game, though, Edgar,” the first mechanic remarked, watching the fast disappearing Northrop.
