The WBWG is comprised of agencies, organizations and individuals interested in bat research, management, and conservation from 13 western States, the Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, and Northern Mexico. Membership in the WBWG is open to anyone who is interested in participating in bat conservation. There are no membership fees or dues. Funding for bat conservation work accomplished by the WBWG is generated by State and Federal land management agencies, non-governmental organizations, and by donations from individual members. We wish her the best of luck on her defense and look forward to her future contributions. INTRODUCING THE EDITORS The WBWG has two new co-editors! Lorraine Andrusiak is a Registered Professional Biologist employed by Keystone Wildlife Research Ltd. in British Columbia, Canada. Lorraine completed a Master’s thesis on Barn Owls before joining Keystone, where she now works on a variety of projects on everything from Terrestrial Ecosystem Mapping to conducting owl surveys. Her interest in bats was sparked by a recent hiking trip encounter with a beautiful hoary bat roosting in a shrub alongside the trail. Since then, she has participated in bat survey work in northeastern and southwestern BC, mentored by David Nagorsen, Mike Sarell and Mandy Kellner. Her hobbies include whippet racing and building needlefelted bats. Julie York works as a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Forest Service in Central Oregon on the Deschutes National Forest. Julie works on both the Sisters and Bend-Ft. Rock Ranger Districts on a variety of projects including owl surveys and cave management. She has participated in winter hibernacula counts for Townsend’s big-eared bats and Bat Grid surveys on the Forest. We thank the outgoing editors Cori Lausen and Kristi DuBois for all their hard work! WBWG ANNOUNCEMENTS BOB BERRY DONATIONS REQUESTED Pat Brown-Berry will again match donations up to $1,000 in 2009 for the Bob Berry Fund. The hope is to make an award every other year at the meeting of WBWG. The impetus behind the generous donations to this fund is to perpetuate Bob’s legacy of assisting others. Bob used his engineering and computer skills to refine the tools used for bat-related field work, and to help people to understand the different and changing technologies. Bob worked best one-on-one and offered his expertise to many students and agency biologists. The goal of these awards is to facilitate research by providing current technology and training from the developers of the technology. Donations can be made by mail or via Pay Pal on the WBWG website at http://www.wbwg.org/business/donate.html. Some excellent proposals were received and awards presented at the annual meeting of the WBWG in Austin April 17, 2009. The WBWG scientific research advisory committee reviewed the proposals. The following awards were given: The Bob Berry Holohil Award Elizabeth Braun de Torrez of Boston University for Foraging behavior, habitat selection and ecosystem services of bats in a Texas pecan agro-ecosystem. She received six transmitters donated by Holohil and a $1,000 cash award for receiver purchase or to cover research expenses. The Bob Berry Titley Electronics Award Tammy Branston and Eric Weiss of the California Department of Fish and Game for Acoustic monitoring of bats during the rewatering of the Lower Owens River. They received an SD1 receiver and Eric participated for free in one of the Anabat trainings donated by Titley Electronics. ANDERSEN1,* AND KEITH GELUSO1 1Biology Department, University of Nebraska at Kearney, Kearney, NE 68849 ABSTRACT.—The western red bat (Lasiurus blossevillii) is a foliage-roosting species of riparian habitats in arid regions of the southwestern United States. Only limited published anecdotal observations exist for roost sites used by this species. Western red bats were split taxonomically from the eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis) in 1988, but summaries of roosting behaviors for western red bats still appear to stem from former associations with the commonly studied eastern red bat.

    US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE NORTHERN LONG-EARED BAT INTERIM CONFERENCE AND PLANNING GUIDANCE USFWS Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 January 6, 2014 NORTHERN LONG-EARED BAT INTERIM CONFERENCE AND PLANNING GUIDANCE On October 2, 2013, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) proposed the northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis; NLEB) for listing as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The purpose of this document is to address the immediate information needs for section 7 conferences and conservation planning for the NLEB should it be listed. Please consider the following: • The information and guidance in this document should not be considered final because the FWS is still making a listing decision for NLEB. • This document provides the FWS’ current suggestions and recommendations for NLEB- consideration in project planning. This document should not be considered mandatory, unless where stated by regulation (i.e., conference requirements). • Much of the support and documentation (e.g., citations) for this document is contained in the attached appendices. It is important to note that, due to the preliminary nature of the state of knowledge of the NLEB, the approaches and information contained within this guidance and appendices may change as we gain additional information on the NLEB and its habitat. Species Overview This section provides a brief overview of the NLEB ecology and threats. Please reference the listing proposal or the FWS website for further information.     Northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) Photo by Virgil Brack; ESI Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plan Amendment Northern Long-eared Bat January 2015 NiSource Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plan Amendment Executive Summary NiSource’s Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plan (MSHCP) represents an innovative approach to provide for both enhanced conservation of listed species and streamlined regulatory compliance for facility activities. The MSHCP addressed 42 species and provided an organized and efficient way to avoid adverse effects to, and also minimize and mitigate for any anticipated take of, these species potentially caused by covered activities. It satisfied applicable provisions of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) pertaining to federally listed species protection, and it concurrently has improved the permitting efficiency for the construction, operation, and maintenance of NiSource’s natural gas pipelines and ancillary facilities by providing a predictable regulatory process for ESA issues under which pipeline activities can proceed. NiSource Inc. was issued an Incidental Take Permit (ITP) from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service or USFWS) on September 13, 2013 and full implementation began on January 1, 2014. As contemplated in Chapter 9 Amendment Process in the original MSHCP, from time to time the MSHCP would need to be amended to add newly listed species that might be affected by NiSource’s activities. The intent of this Amendment is to add the Northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) to the MSHCP and ITP. Before amending the ITP, the Service will undertake a combined intra-agency and inter-agency “Section 7 consultation” to include the Service and other federal agencies with jurisdiction over some of NiSource’s covered activities, specifically the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S.

    BAT-WATCHING SITES OF TEXAS Welcome! Texas happens to be the battiest state in the country. It is home to 32 of the 47 species of bats found in the United States. Not only does it hold the distinction of having the most kinds of bats, it also boasts the largest known bat colony in the world, Bracken Cave Preserve, near San Antonio, and the largest urban bat colony, Congress Avenue Bridge, in Austin. Visitors from around the world flock BAT ANATOMY to Texas to enjoy public bat-viewing at several locations throughout the state.
