He is still young and learning, so there are things he can improve but I am sure over the years they will come… and he will be a world-class goalkeeper. “He did really well [for England against Holland] and it shows the confidence he has in his own ability to play like that – in a game like that. “He has been brilliant for us all season and has been great in the past two England games he has played, too. “I am really happy for him and, hopefully, he can be the number one at the World Cup.” Pickford’s raking distribution and authoritative command of his penalty area have contributed significantly to the Wearsider’s rising stock, while he has made 112 saves this term – six more than Manchester United’s keeper, David de Gea. Pickford’s total of 22 punches is second only to the 24 completed by Heurelho Gomes of Watford. “I KNEW I HAD SQUEEZED EVERY OUNCE FROM MY CAREER”

Starting out at hometown club Newcastle United and going on to spend “a fantastic five years” with Everton, Steve Watson looks back at his playing days – and a different life now as a FORMER PLAYER — manager.

Words: Paul McNamara

teve Watson wanted to rinse every STEVE WATSON drop from his football career. By his own verdict, his five-year Everton stay reached its peak when he was operating on the right of midfield. SThe Geordie was playing in a team revitalised by David Moyes. He was diligent, cussed and reliable, all traits which endeared him to the manager who replaced Walter Smith in March 2002. Watson scored important goals, too. Often in clusters. He had struck twice in the previous three matches when Everton went to Bolton Wanderers in January 2003. On that night at the Reebok Stadium, he broke the deadlock with a brilliantly improvised overhead kick. He added the Blues’ second goal of a 2-1 victory, nudging in a rebound after Brian McBride’s shot was saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen. Four years later and approaching his 33rd birthday, Watson was playing his football for Sheffield Wednesday. A grinding hip injury dictated that he would never try to replicate his Reebok Stadium acrobatics. “It was affecting my whole life, I couldn’t get in and out of the car or turn over in bed, but I was somehow managing to play Championship football,” Watson tells Everton’s matchday programme. “I had learned to manage the pain and what I could and couldn’t do in a game. I wouldn’t try a volley from any height like the one I scored for Everton. “There were things I knew I couldn’t do but I was still EVERTONFC.COM

playing in the Championship every week. “I just reached the stage where it was affecting my life, to “I WAS UP AGAINST the point where there were things I couldn’t do with the kids, I couldn’t go to amusement parks with them… things like that. CRISTIANO RONALDO “I spoke to [then Sheffield Wednesday manager] Brian AT LEFT-BACK. WE Laws at the start of the [2008/09] season and said, ‘I am really worried this is going to be the one when my hip gives KEPT A CLEAN SHEET up on me’,” says Watson. “He just said. ‘We need you, give me everything you can, and if that time comes we can discuss it’. AND WON. THAT “My last game was the Sheffield derby. We beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane and it was the first time in ages we MATCH SUMMED UP MY had done the double over them. “The next day in training, I just could not control a ball above shin height. “I went to CAREER.” Brian’s office and told him I would have to finish. He filled are you winding me up!’ every outfield position for Newcastle and had a bash at most “He was great, though, and Sheffield Wednesday were, of them for Everton – even partnering Tomasz Radzinski up they allowed me to use their facilities for my rehabilitation front for a period during the 2000/01 campaign under Smith. even though I was out of contract. Moyes trusted the player’s football nous and character “It was a tough decision. But I knew I had squeezed every unconditionally. ounce from my career. And to come back from hip surgery “I remember the night Big Dunc scored and we beat at 35 would have been pushing it. Manchester United in the season we finished fourth,” says “At least I retired knowing I had done all I could. That Watson, recalling a rocking Goodison Park occasion when made my life a bit easier. A lot of players don’t have that, ’s header did for star-studded United. they don’t know the right time to go.” “David had come up to me on the Monday and asked if I thought I could do a job at left-back. I was up against Watson in action against Manchester United Cristiano Ronaldo but I managed to slot in there and we STEVE WATSON STEVE kept a clean sheet and won the game. “That match summed up my career.” Watson signed for Everton from Aston Villa in summer 2000 – two years after a proposed move to the Blues had fallen through when he left Newcastle for Villa. He was one of a glut of players to arrive as part of an ambitious recruitment drive, with Thomas Gravesen, Alessandro Pistone, Niclas Alexandersson, Paul Gascoigne, Alex Nyarko and Ferguson also brought to Goodison. “We had a decent squad but we started poorly and

FORMER PLAYER — PLAYER FORMER were at the wrong end of the league when Walter left the following season,” says Watson. “I loved working under Walter, [assistant manager] Archie Knox and . The players were 100 per cent behind Walter but we were not getting results. “David’s style was slightly different. It was very methodical, with a lot of attention to detail defensively. “Little things changed and, with them, so did results. David had never managed at the top level before and I still remember his first meeting, which really impressed me. “It is daunting going into a dressing room of professional footballers - I have done that, albeit at a much lower level. “He spoke fantastically well and was very clear about what he wanted to do and how hard we would have to work to meet his expectations. And we bought into it. With pretty much the same group of players he turned around results almost immediately. “As my time went on there we grew very strong in the dressing room and had a lot of big personalities. “The squad was so close and tight knit in my final season

Rather than be sworn off management by the seemingly harsh dismissal of his friend, Watson drew motivation from the experience. He worked with Clark at next club Birmingham City but was growing impatient to stick his own head on the chopping block. His chance came when – via a spell as assistant boss at Macclesfield Town – he was appointed manager of National League club Gateshead in October last year. “Since we left Huddersfield [in February 2012] it has got worse – a manager’s shelf life is even shorter,” says Watson. “But if you are scared of that and thinking about failing, you are in the wrong job. You don’t go into any job thinking of failure, ‘What happens if I don’t do this right?’ “That was how I looked at Gateshead. People thought I was an idiot. I was talking about taking over team in 17th or 18th and hoping to get to the play-offs. “People were saying that was crazy talk. But what else do you want to do? You have to be ambitious. “Huddersfield did not put me off. It made me hungrier — FORMER PLAYER — to go and succeed. “You reach the stage where you feel you are ready to make all the decisions – to have the buck stop with you. But it is very difficult to get that start. You have to do it the hard

[2004/05] when Everton secured a top-four spot] that we would run through brick walls for each other. I loved my time STEVE WATSON at Everton. It was a fantastic five years. Watson returned to Goodison a West Bromwich Albion player on the final day of 2005/06, for a match notable for bringing down the curtain on Duncan Ferguson’s Everton career – “I always enjoyed going back to Everton. Newcastle, too. Even now, when I come back, it is a club I feel totally at home with and part of.” Now 44, Watson confesses he wouldn’t have picked former teammate and current Everton first-team coach Ferguson as one destined for the training fields but he has been impressed with Ferguson’s work. On that score, though, he can empathise. When Watson studied for his UEFA B Licence while with Sheffield Wednesday, it was on an internal ‘just in case’ understanding. He was lending a hand to close friend and former Newcastle colleague Lee Clark at Huddersfield Town when the opportunity of something more formal cropped up. “It just became another obsession like playing was,” says Watson. “I spent a lot of time working the back four at Huddersfield. A lot of it was stuff I learned from David Moyes. “His attention to detail and defending and distances and getting up and down the pitch. Things you found quite boring as a player, but which worked. We went on this run – 43 unbeaten games, breaking the Football League record – so it is a good thing to have on my CV.” Watson’s former Blues teammate Clark was sacked within three months of that invincible Duncan Ferguson streak being curtailed by Charlton Athletic.

– and he does apologise once or twice for referring to his boyhood team as ‘we’ – he cites the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Manchester United back in February as the “catalyst” for a significant upturn, which banished any relegation fears to the shadows. There will be scant time for reflection on tonight’s events, however, with Watson bouncing on to a match against Ebbsfleet United on Tuesday. “I am like anybody with ambition and a winning mentality,” says Watson. “The Tranmere result hurt. There was a lot of anger and disappointment. “I would love to take Gateshead up. The chairman has just explained he cannot put any more money into the club, he wants somebody to take over. “I am trying very hard to help get people interested in Gateshead and sell the dream of having another league club in the north east. As time goes on – as any manager would say – I hope to have the chance to build my own squad in the summer and have a full pre-season… then — FORMER PLAYER — have a right go at it. “I am ready for anything”. Steve Watson’s ability to adapt is very much alive and kicking. STEVE WATSON way. I have accepted that and it is what I want to do. “When we went into Birmingham we had about 10 highly-paid players on long-term contracts who were not particularly motivated. It is very tough to turn that around. They are sitting on deals that allow them to go through the motions for 18 months. “You don’t have that at our level. Everybody is hungry and desperate to be Football League players. Players are playing every single game to pay their bills and mortgages and look after their families.” Watson is talking 48 hours after his side surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 at Tranmere Rovers. Later on this same day he would watch Gateshead concede six minutes into stoppage time to draw 2-2 at Halifax. Fewer than 48 hours on, the north-east team would contemptuously swat aside Eastleigh 2-0 to move into 13th place. That is a snapshot of Watson’s life today. Forever thinking on his feet, juggling football matters with trying to find buyers for his club, while formulating ideas for a Gateshead academy to serve the slew of raw but talented youngsters who “slip through the net” of powerhouse trio Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. He’ll find time to watch his two former clubs collide at Goodison – relieved he doesn’t have to favour one over the other given neither side’s need for the three points overrides the other’s. Like many of Newcastle’s supporters

Toon ready for another season in the top-flight.

Four successive wins against Southampton,

Huddersfield, Leicester and Arsenal have all but THE OPPOSITION — ensured Newcastle United will be playing in the Premier League again next season following their return to the top-flight last summer. The man leading the way in the Toon’s impressive campaign has been Jonjo Shelvey. The midfielder has been a standout performer in the latter stages of the season, leading to calls for the 26-year-old to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia. Shelvey has notched a goal – in the 2-1 win at NEWCASTLE UNITED Leicester on 7 April - and two assists in the past three games, receiving the man-of-the-match award for his performance in last month’s 3-0 home victory against Southampton. Shelvey’s impact over the past few weeks has arguably been matched by the influence of Kenedy since his loan move from Chelsea in January. As the battle to avoid relegation started to heat up, the 22-year-old Brazilian came to the fore, scoring twice against Southampton and assisting the only goal in the win over Huddersfield, with Magpies boss Rafael Benitez commenting the youngster is “not scared on the ball”, showing maturity above his years. At the other end of the pitch, Jamaal Lascelles has impressed, too. The 24-year-old was made captain by Benitez and has more than rewarded that decision, chipping in with three goals over the course of the campaign, including winners against Swansea and Stoke. In defence, Lascelles’ has also been key with notable displays against Southampton and Manchester United helping Newcastle to clean sheets and vital wins. Last weekend’s come-from-behind 2-1 success against Arsenal at St James’ Park took the Magpies past the 40-point mark to all but guarantee another year in the top-flight. They will now be aiming to finish the 2017/18 campaign with a top-half finish in the Premier League.

BLAST FROM THE PAST!

This week’s BLAST FROM THE PAST comes from an interview that DUNCAN McKENZIE did for a book called ‘Talking Blue’, which was a collection of candid interviews with former Everton players, lovingly collated by Becky Tallentire in 2000…

When I was a kid I used to live with a football; I used to sleep with it, too. I don’t think I learned anything after about eight years of age. By then there wasn’t a trick I couldn’t do with a ball. I could catch it on my head, juggle it on my shoulder, throw it in the air, catch it on my thigh and trap it between my heel and my backside when someone threw it to me. I used to love playing and I suppose I did nothing but train by messing about with a football. When I became a professional, I didn’t really like training. I liked the craic of it but I always used to go in goal for a laugh. I loved playing in HISTORY —DUNCAN MCKENZIE —DUNCAN HISTORY

57 THE LEGEND OF 6O GOALS

On Saturday 5 May 1928, Everton’s William Ralph ‘Dixie’ Dean achieved football immortality when, in the final home game of the season against Arsenal, he set a new top-fight goal- scoring record that will probably stand forever. Now, on the eve of the 90th anniversary of his remarkable achievement, fans can join in a special salute to the ‘legend of 60 goals’ on a night when they will be able to view his treasured 1928 League Championship medal, considered by collectors to be the ‘holy grail’ of football memorabilia. EFC HERITAGE SOCIETY — On Friday, 4 May, in association with the Club, an exhibition of Dixie’s achievements, in words and pictures, is being presented by the Everton FC Heritage Society. Fans will be able to hear first-hand tales from an amazing career told by people who knew Dean, interviewed him and idolised him as the definitive man of the people. The event is being held at Goodison’s ‘People’s Club Lounge’, which is extremely fitting as it was at the Park End where Dixie netted his 60th goal and, of course, the venue looks out onto the former Goodison Avenue where he once lived in a small club terraced house. DIXIE DEAN Dixie’s 1928 Championship medal is being brought home that night for the very first time since it was sold at auction in Glasgow in 1991 for what was then a world record amount. This was the piece of silverware that Dixie treasured above all others and the man who has had it in his safe-keeping for the past 27 years, Gordon Wallis, will reveal for the first time an unexpected personal story linked with the purchase. Another prestigious piece of local silverware will not only be on display but will also be presented on the night to its latest Everton recipient. The Liverpool Echo’s Dixie Dean available now at: Memorial Award was instigated in the 1980s www.toffeeart.co.uk/product/dixie-dean-ticket since when it has been in the hands of heroes like Alan Ball, Howard Kendall, , Don’t forget to call into St Luke’s Church, next , , and many others. Speaking to Sammy Lee in a frosted glass office at USM Finch Farm, it’s his relentless drive and appetite for the game that resonates most. These qualities are also what the assistant manager demands from Everton’s players every time they step onto the training pitch. The born-and-bred Scouser says the Blues squad has risen to this challenge ever since he arrived at the Club with boss Sam Allardyce and his experienced backroom team in late November. Back then, Everton sat just two points above the Premier League drop zone. They come into tonight’s game in ninth place, close to Leicester City one spot above. Key to their improved form, Lee says, has been the players’ desire and application both on the training field at their state-of-the-art Halewood complex and on matchdays. “It’s down to hard work, nothing else,” he says. “And that’s on and off the pitch. All we try to do is get the maximum out of this squad of players. “We all make mistakes. If anyone tells you they haven’t made a mistake, they haven’t told the truth. It’s how you INTERVIEW — SAMMY LEE learn from those mistakes and how you work hard to try to rectify them. “All we’re looking for is hard work and total focus. That’s what we have demanded of the players – and they’re a “ALL WE’RE LOOKING FOR IS HARD WORK AND TOTAL FOCUS. THAT’S WHAT WE HAVE DEMANDED OF THE PLAYERS"

great bunch here at Everton.” The value of this hard work has been most evident in Everton’s home form. The Toffees have taken 18 points from a possible 30 at Goodison Park since Allardyce and his management team took charge. Lee, however, is keen to emphasise a further key factor in the Blues’ impressive run of results at Goodison Park. “The supporters have been terrific,” he says. “We need them to be with us, we need them to be the 12th man. Away from home we’ve got a great following, too.” Lee first linked up with Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers in 2005. The Big Sam/Little Sam partnership yielded consecutive eighth and seventh-place finishes in the Premier League, before Allardyce left to take charge at Newcastle United in 2007, with Lee becoming Bolton boss. The pair have also worked together at England and Crystal Palace. Lee says their relationship is one built on the foundations of openness and trust. “We don’t always agree, we argue like husband and

He imparts that to the players and, hopefully, when they go out onto the pitch they know exactly what we want to do.” Lee is also full of admiration for his fellow members of the Club’s backroom staff.
