It represents a complex and articulate phenomenon, in which the reasons and proposals related to the devotional and personal sphere are combined with a series of innovative opportunities that help reach a depth knowledge of a territory. The religious motive often means that pilgrims travel along specific routes to visit a number of shrines or even to complete lengthy itineraries.

  • The Socio-Institutional Divide. Explaining Italy's Regional Inequality Over the Long
1 Emanuele Felice Università “G. D’Annunzio” Chieti-Pescara and Collegio “Carlo Alberto” Torino* The socio-institutional divide. Explaining Italy’s regional inequality over the long run Preliminary draft. Please do not quote without permission Abstract In recent years there have been major advances in the research about the historical pattern of regional inequality in Italy and its historical roots: new and more accurate estimates of regional GDP, as well as of social indicators (human capital, life expectancy, HDI, heights, inequality, social capital) and other indices (market potential), running roughly from around the Unification to our days, are now available. By the light of this up-to-date information, the article reviews the debate about the determinants of regional development in Italy, within the broader framework of the country’s industrial take-off and modern economic growth, and connects it to the main strands of the international literature. After critically discussing the competing hypotheses proposed to account for the different patterns observed and the North-South divide, a different explanation – and the main argument of the article – is presented: a North-South socio- institutional divide pre-existed Unification, in some respects grew stronger with it and was never bridged throughout the history of post-Unification Italy; such a divide ultimately impacted on the levels of human and social capital, as well as upon differences in policies and institutional performance, and thus on economic growth. • St. Conrad of Piacenza
St. Conrad of Piacenza (O.F.S.) [1290 – 1351] (Feast Day: February 19) Born in 1290 of a noble family in northern Italy, Conrad as a young man married Euphrosyne, daughter of a nobleman. One day while hunting, he ordered attendants to set fire to some brush in order to flush out the game. The fire spread to nearby fields and to a large forest. Conrad fled. An innocent peasant was imprisoned, tortured to confess, and condemned to death. Conrad confessed his guilt, saved the man’s life, and paid for the damaged property. One site stated that he paid for the damaged property and he and his wife gave everything they owned to the poor in recompense. The other site stated that he paid for the damaged property, selling nearly all he owned in order to raise the cash. Conrad and his wife saw the hand of God in the dramatic event. Soon after this event in 1315, Conrad and his wife agreed to separate: she to a Poor Clare monastery and he joining a community of hermits, who were Franciscan tertiaries (known today as Secular Franciscans), following the Third Order Rule. Soon Conrad developed a reputation for holiness, and the flow of visitors left him unable to keep the solitude he sought. He then embarked on the life of a pilgrim, going to Rome, and from there to the Holy Land and Malta and, about 1340, to Palermo in Sicily, where he was directed to an isolated grotto in the Val di Noto. Conrad felt called by God to serve the local people more directly and in 1343 went to the city of Netum, where he cared for the sick at the Hospital of St.
