5 6 2020 FUND-A-NEED

CRITICAL RESOURCES ARE NEEDED FOR OUR V SCHOLARS, INNOVATIVE YOUNG SCIENTISTS WHO ARE THE LIFELINE OF RESEARCH FOR THE V FOUNDATION.

Fewer grants awarded means less research. COVID-19 has interrupted and delayed cancer research. Your help is urgently needed to sustain ongoing work across the country.

An increase in start-up costs is anticipated during the current health crisis, making the need for supplemental funds from private grant-makers even more urgent. With medical professionals being called to the frontline of COVID care, we must ensure that V Scholar labs and projects are supported for their return.

Cancer has not slowed during the pandemic. We continue to lose over 1,600 people a day from this disease. Now, more than ever, we need to focus on helping people diagnosed with cancer who are especially vulnerable.

When you plant the seed of support for V Scholars, you help new ideas grow. Your donations are the lifeline of research.

Your contribution can fund research that is happening NOW!

In the capable hands of great doctors, particularly Dr. Robert White, the cancerous tumor and 18 inches of her colon were removed. After the surgery, she went through six months of chemotherapy with the hope of eradicating any remaining cancer. At her five-year check-up, she was declared “cured from cancer.” It was then that the doctor told her that she was one of the lucky ones. Initially, he had given her less than a 50% chance of survival. That was 17 years and 8 grandchildren ago. It is because organizations like the V Foundation Sage Steele provide research dollars to doctors and scientists with novel ideas of how cure this disease that many cancer survivors are with us today.” - John Truchard

35 36 DEAR WORLD JIM’S STORY

I believe a person is never really gone when their actions and words continue to inspire. This is how I feel about my business colleague and more importantly, my friend. It has been fi fteen years since a family, a business, a community, and unlimited list of friends lost a man that was “larger than life.” Unfortunately, it made no diff erence to this terrible disease called cancer.

I can remember being transferred to Chicago early in my business WE PROUDLY SUPPORT career. With business expectations high, and a group of business partners who could probably be described as “diffi cult” at best, I needed a mentor per se. Along came just the man: Chicago tough, street smart, and successful. My fi rst business meeting with him was very challenging, but ended with the universal invite, “Let’s go have a beer.” From that time on we developed a professional relationship which evolved into a wonderful friendship. He was always there, never compromising his principles, stellar reputation, always transparent, and a role model with a heart of gold. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.

When he was taken ill with cancer, it was devastating, but his courage and strength was so empowering during this period, it touched my heart, my soul, my spirit. During my last conversa- tion with him, he shared that it was “tuff to live and even tuff ’er What we decide to do today to leave”, but, if you need anything while I am here you can always “count on me.” I said good-bye and he lost his battle with will make a difference cancer shortly thereafter. for tomorrow I will always be committed to making my friend proud, and doing what he did for others. ”You Can Count On Me”….

Forever grateful,
