News Release For Immediate Release Contact: Joe DiLaura 317/232-3396 State awards $1.8 million in tech prep funds Grants to help students better prepare for high-wage, high-demand jobs INDIANAPOLIS (February 14, 2008) -- Seventy-three Indiana high schools, post-secondary institutions, career centers and consortia have been awarded tech prep grants totaling more than $1.8 million, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development announced today. The grants will help schools better align their curricula with more rigorous academic standards and will improve student preparation for high wage, high demand jobs projected for the state in the decades ahead. “Tech Prep is an important school-to-work transition strategy, one that helps all students make the connection between school and employment,” said Teresa Voors, commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development. “Tech Prep connects learning to career pathways and provides students with the knowledge, skills and behaviors to compete successfully in the workplace of tomorrow.” Tech Prep is a nationwide career development system which includes a planned program of study that incorporates academic and career-related courses articulated between the secondary and postsecondary levels leading to a diploma, degree, or two-year apprenticeship certificate. The grants from the state were awarded in two categories, Tech Prep programs of study and Project Lead the Way. Twenty-one institutions received grants for general Tech Prep programs of study and will be used by the educational institutions to better align their curricula with challenging academic standards and relevant career and technical content which lead to an industry-recognized credential or certificate or an associate or bachelor’s degree.
