Theme of Today’s Worship: Jesus Lives to Give Us Peace

The Order of Service Divine Service I ~ Christian Worship Supplement, p. 15

Easter Greeting from WELS President Mark Schroeder

 The Opening Hymn: Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands1 Koine The hymn is printed on p. 11 in the service folder.

1 Martin Luther wrote this strong Easter hymn to emphasize that Jesus’ death and resurrection were the fulfillment of the Passover celebration. Just as Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper to fulfill the Passover meal; just as Jesus shed his blood on the cross to become the true Passover Lamb; so also Jesus rose from the dead to deliver Passover’s greatest promise: salvation from death and hell and new life with God forever. 2 The Invocation

M(inister): In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C(ongregation): Amen.

The Confession of Sins

M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Prayer and Praise

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

 Hymn: #143, He’s Risen, He’s Risen2 The hymn is printed on p. 12 in the service folder.

2 C.F.W. Walther, founder of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and perhaps the greatest figure in the history of American Lutheranism, composed both text and tune of this hymn on a journey he took in 1860 to Germany for recuperation. Originally 11 stanzas, this hymn depicts the opening of two doors: the door to death’s prison, so it can’t hold believers in anymore; and the door to “Eden,” which, once closed because of sin (Genesis 3:22-24), now leads to life in Paradise with God forever. 3 The Prayer of the Day

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Let us pray.

O risen Lord, you came to your disciples and took away their fears with your word of peace. Come to us also by your Word and sacraments, and banish our fears with the comforting assurance of your abiding presence; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Word of God

. The First Lesson: Acts 3:12-20 Jesus’ resurrection gives us peace because he lives to heal us, physically and spiritually.

12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see. 17 “Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you— even Jesus.”

4  Hymn: #153, Alleluia! Jesus Lives3 The hymn is printed on p. 13 in the service folder.

. The Second Lesson: 1 John 5:1-6 Jesus’ resurrection gives us peace because it’s proof that our Savior has overcome the world.

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

 Hymn: #166, The Day of Resurrection4 The hymn is printed on p. 14 in the service folder.

The Verse of the Day: John 16:33 The Congregation will speak the verse together.

Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Alleluia!

3 Throughout the season of , we bid farewell to “Alleluia” (Hebrew for “Praise the Lord!”) as a way of humbling ourselves for the penitential remembrance of our Savior’s journey to the cross to pay for our sins. But in this Easter hymn and many others, we exult with “Alleluia!” because Jesus has completed our salvation, won our forgiveness, and still lives to bless us and bring us eternal life. 4 These three stanzas, written by John of Damascus about the middle of the 8th century, made up a portion of a hymn traditionally sung in Greek churches as part of the celebration that begun on the Saturday evening before Easter. At midnight on Easter Morn, the shout, “Christ is risen!” would go out, candles would be lit to fill the gloom of night with a sudden glow of light, and this hymn of victory would be sung. 5  Hymn Response: #154, v. 2, 4, Alleluia, Alleluia, Give Thanks5

Alleluia, alleluia, give thanks to the risen Lord. Alleluia, alleluia, give praise to his name.

Spread the good news o'er all the earth: Jesus has died and has risen.

Alleluia, alleluia, give thanks to the risen Lord. Alleluia, alleluia, give praise to his name.

God has proclaimed his gracious gift: Life eternal for all who believe.

Alleluia, alleluia, give thanks to the risen Lord. Alleluia, alleluia, give praise to his name.

. The Gospel Lesson: John 20:19-31 Jesus’ resurrection gives us the peace that Jesus is our true God and Savior who has won forgiveness and life for us eternally.

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

5 The purpose of the Verse of the Day is to highlight the importance of hearing the good news about Jesus that will be read in the Gospel Lesson. This hymn serves that purpose well because it tells the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection, proclaims God’s gracious gift of life eternal for all who believe in Jesus, and praises the Lord for it all! According to Donald E. Fishel, this text and tune came to him spontaneously and “as one” during a time of prayer in the summer of 1971, when he was a music student at the University of Michigan. 6 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

 The Hymn of the Day: #165, v. 1-4, O Sons and Daughters of the King6 The hymn is printed on p. 15 in the service folder.

The Apostles’ Creed

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

 The Hymn of the Day: #165, v. 5-9, O Sons and Daughters of the King The hymn is printed on p. 15 in the service folder.

6 This Latin poem from the 15th century retells the story of Easter morning and the story of our Gospel lesson in song and verse, praising God for the physical resurrection of Christ and for the spiritual resurrection of faith. Because of what Jesus has done for us, we are truly sons and daughters of the King of heaven and earth! 7 (Sunday, 8:00am) New Member Welcome for Darlene Kasper

The Prayer of the Church

M: O Lord God, our strength, our song, and our salvation, you fulfilled your promises by the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead. C: Thanks be to God! You give us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. M: In your compassion you sent Christ, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life to rescue the lost. C: Drive out all doubt and gloom that we may delight in your glorious triumph. M: Lift our eyes heavenward to see him who lives to make intercession for the saints, and grant us confidence in the greatness of his power. Keep before us the vision of your redeemed people standing before your throne and singing the song of victory: C: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive wisdom and power and honor and glory and praise. M: Make us instruments of your peace as we bring the good news of hope and new life to those around us. Guide us in the use of all that you have entrusted to us: our time, our talents, and our treasures. C: Risen Lord, live in us that we may live for you. M: Merciful Lord Jesus, grant healing to the sick, and strengthen the faith of the suffering and the dying. Assure them of your abiding presence, and comfort them with the hope of eternal life. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: Gracious Father, you have restored to us the joy of your salvation. With happy hearts, we come before you and say: C: Alleluia! Thanks be to God! Amen.

8 The Lord’s Prayer

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

 Hymn: #149, Christ the Lord Is Risen Today7 The hymn is printed on p. 16 in the service folder.

The Closing Prayer

M: O Lord God, our heavenly Father, pour out the Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep us strong in your grace and truth, protect and comfort us in all temptation, and bestow on us your saving peace, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Lord’s Blessing

M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

C: Amen.

8 Written toward the end of the 19th century by George R. Woodward, this hymn calls to mind the joyful proclamation of 1 Corinthians 15:17, 20: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins… But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead!” But “since Jesus crossed the river” – a picture of death and resurrection that remembers Israel crossing the Jordan River into the Promised Land – we can joyfully look forward to eternal life in our Promised Land of heaven. 10 Loud songs of Al – le – lu – ia. Al – le – lu – ia!

2 No son of man could conquer death, Such ruin sin had wrought us. No innocence was found on earth, And therefore death had brought us Into bondage from of old And ever grew more strong and bold And held us as its captive. Alleluia!

3 Christ Jesus, God’s own Son, came down, His people to deliver; Destroying sin, he took the crown From death’s pale brow forever. Stripped of pow’r, no more it reigns; An empty form alone remains; Its sting is lost forever. Alleluia!

4 It was a strange and dreadful strife When life and death contended. The victory remained with life; The reign of death was ended. Holy Scripture plainly says That death is swallowed up by death; Its sting is lost forever. Alleluia!

5 Here the true Paschal Lamb we see, Whom God so freely gave us; He died on the accursed tree—So strong his love—to save us. See, his blood now marks our door; Faith points to it; death passes o’er, And Satan cannot harm us. Alleluia! 11
