The Huron-Clinton Metroparks Foundation is pleased to present the 3rd Annual Charity Golf Classic at Kensington Metropark featuring Karen Newman, Red Wings National Anthem singer, Darren McCarty, former player, Willie Horton, Legend and Trevor Thompson, Reporter/Host at Fox Sports Net Detroit. Featured speaker at the Awards Reception will be former Detroit Tigers player, Willie Horton, who was part of the 1968 championship team.

Why Sponsor: Funds raised will support the Metroparks Get Out and Learn program. This program provides qualifying schools in southeast the opportunity to bring students out to a Metropark for a rich, engaging, nature-connective field trip, including transportation. Special Presentation: Willie Horton Detroit Tiger legend Willie Horton is a true hometown hero. Born in Virginia, he moved North with his family at the age of 7. As a star player for Detroit’s Northwestern High School, Willie was already a power hitter by the age of 16. In 1961, he joined the Detroit Tigers system. He would end up spending 14 of his 18 years playing in Detroit. His contribution to the Tigers puts him in elite company: Fifth on the club’s all-time home hitters roster, 886 RBIs and a member of the Tigers’ Championship Team, hitting .304 during the Series. Willie has also made a tremendous contribution to Detroit off the field. Organizations he has been involved with include United Way, Boys and Girls Club of America, Meals On Wheels, Police Athletic League and more. On July 15, 2000, the Tigers retired Willie’s number 23 and unveiled the Willie Horton statue at . Willie is married to Gloria Horton together, they have seven children, nineteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Featured Host: Darren McCarty Darren McCarty, former Detroit Red Wing player, will serve as Featured Host for the 3rd Annual Charity Golf Classic. Growing up across the border in Leamington, Ontario, McCarty Fulfilled a childhood dream of playing in the for the Detroit Red Wings and winning four Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. McCarty is involved in numerous endeavors and charities including FanCrater and DMacs Detroit on News Media Radio. McCarty is excited to be apart of all things Michigan and the Metroparks, which brings back great memories of rollerblading in the summers.

Event Emcee: Karen Newman Karen Newman was raised in Rochester and Grand Blanc and studied music at Oakland University. Newman is best known for being “The Voice” or “The Red Wings’ Own,” for the National Hockey Leagues’ Detroit Red Wings, regularly performing the National Anthem before the team’s home games. She has also toured with Bob Seger and Kid Rock. Newman also works with and supports numerous local children’s and animal charities in and around Michigan.

Special Presentation: Trevor Thompson For the past 21 years, Trevor Thompson has served as Fox Sports Net Detroit as a reporter/host. A native of Dresden, ON who went on to attend Ryerson University in Toronto, Trevor has become as much a celebrity in the Motor City, as most of the athletes he covers in his report and commentaries. Trevor won the Detroit Sports Broadcaster Association “Ty Tyson Award” for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting in June 2015 and soon after receiving the award, became president of the association. Trevor’s list of sports journalism credits, include in-depth coverage of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings and MLB’s Detroit Tigers, serving as a host and reporter on programs like “Red Wings Live” and “Wingspan”, as well as taking a leading role in the network’s post-game coverage of the playoffs.
