LESSON 5: Boneshaker by Cherie Priest On the forum, I gave you the following assignment: Read the first 5 pages of Boneshaker by Cherie Priest. List the Steampunk elements you find. Then list the ESSENTIAL Steampunk genre elements, and then the Character descriptions, then setting Your chart will look something like this: STEAMPUNK ...................... ESSENTIAL ...................CHARACTER ...........SETTING ELEMENTS ......................... ELEMENTS.....................ELEMENTS...............ELEMENTS black overcoat black overcoat 11 crooked stairs 11 crooked stairs and so on you can find Boneshaker here at Amazon The table part didn’t come out very well so here’s a better version. I added the word “ALL” to the column labels because I wanted you to understand that in those columns I’m not looking for any specific elements other than those labeled. For instance, under “CHARACTER ELEMENTS (ALL)” give all the character elements you find, not just elements pertaining to the Steampunk genre. STEAMPUNK ESSENTIAL CHARACTER SETTING ELEMENTS (ALL) STEAMPUNK ELEMENTS ELEMENTS (ALL) ELEMENTS (ALL) Black overcoat Black overcoat 11 crooked stairs 11 crooked stairs Goth, Gadgets & Grunge: Steampunk Stories with Style!© By Pat Hauldren LESSON 5: Boneshaker by Cherie Priest / 2 If you’ll notice on the link I provided for Boneshaker at Amazon.com, it’s listed as “ (Sci Fi Essential Books) “ and baby, that’s where *I* want to be! I couldn’t find a specific definition for exactly what that term meant at Amazon.com, but just from the term itself, you can tell it’s the list of books that, while aren’t classics yet, are becoming so for various reasons.

I have loved this since I first read it shortly after it ...By Edith RudyI have loved this since I first read it shortly after it was published. (Powers is one of those authors whose books I buy immediately.) The chance to get it for my Kindle was delightful...I am slowly trying to get my favorites on my e- reader. It can be a bit complex to figure out...the protagonist is both a "fish" and a "candidate for the crown". He's a fish because he ignored good advice and got into a poker game where he lost his soul...but he's also the natural son of the current Fisher King...though nobody knows it except the old man who adopted him after his natural father tried to kill him.As is the case with most of Powers' writing, the book deals with resurrection. (In this case, it's even the name of the variety of poker he plays.) Scott decides that he will attempt to take the crown rather than giving up his soul.

  • On My Honor: Stories of Scouts in Action
On My Honor: Stories of Scouts in Action Some heroes act in the daily round of existing, others act at the moment. This is a book about heroes who were and who are members of the great Movement known as Scouting. Some of them received official recognition for their acts, some did not. On My Honor: Stories of Scouts in Action narrates stories of Scouts and Scouters who have displayed heroism in the service of fellow human beings. It is a landmark work in the history of BSP publishing. Special thanks to Bong Saculles for creating a digitized copy of this book for the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. All Rights Reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced in any form without permission in writing from the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. To all the Scouts. 1 FOREWORD It is fitting that we remember the past. It is practical that we move with the times. It is important that we serve the youth of today. It is necessary that we face present realities. No monument ever suffices to honor acts of heroism. Imitation is the best praise. So the best tribute which can be rendered to people who have performed heroic acts is to publicize the deed in order that an example can be set before others to inspire them to do likewise. On My Honor: Stories of Scouts in Action narrates stories of Scouts and Scouters who have displayed heroism in the service of fellow human beings. It is a landmark work in the history of BSP publishing.

  • Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk
Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas.
