eujacksonville.com | october 5-11, 2006 11 good news for those who love good news (or, how the console gaming industry will take over the world this holiday season.) BY NORM STOVALL [email protected] As we zoom toward the year 2007, the video games industry is picking up steam and won’t stop with its constant barrage of amazing innovation and fun products designed to suck your bank account dry, leave you with no time for personal activities such as bathing, and make you a general outcast to society at large. If you are a video game fan or even a casual game player, your life and the amount of free time you have will soon drastically change. Thanks to some innovative thinking, writer Sylvia Branzei is doing her part to change all that. In 1995 Branzei wrote a non-fi c- tion children’s book called Grossology. The book, which is all about the yucky side of the human body, became a best-seller and spawned several sequels. To the delight of elementary and junior high school teachers everywhere, a highly popular traveling exhibition of grossness quickly followed suit. “Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body” has found its way to Jacksonville’s Museum of Science and History. WWWMARKSJAXCOM I’d like to thank Ian and Mary Chase for being quick to sponsor the Trench Fest, as well as Marco, Eddie, and Tony. Marco has been telling me for years that I should do another one, and he didn’t think twice about helping me in every way he was able this year. Burrito Gallery and The Fox are two of the best restaurants in town and represent our local culture fantastically. It is like Jeremy Pafford told me the other day, so many people are ashamed of Jacksonville because they think we don’t have a culture, when in fact we have a very rich culture, as evidenced in this festival. A special thanks also goes out to Tim and Anne Hall who supported the festival even though Jack Rabbits wasn’t a venue this year and they weren’t necessarily floating in profits. Jack Rabbits has fallen in and out of favor with some musicians in town over the years, but they are truly the patriarch of Jacksonville’s music scene. Every band in town has Tim to thank for helping them get started and providing the best sound system in town. Before Jack Rabbits it was impossible to make money playing a local show. Thanks to EU Jacksonville, who didn’t even know me that well when I proposed them helping me with this event, and they agreed without question. As I always try to include only locally owned businesses in this event, EU is the perfect media partner. They are the only 100% locally owned and operated print media of their caliber and designation in town. Finally, I thank you for supporting humanity. All of these people are inspirational, encouraging, and a necessary piece of the event, but without the throngs of music lovers that like to get together for a good cause and have a good time, there would be no event at all.
