3. City of Richmond

Richmond is a culturally diverse and geographically unique community located within Metropolitan Vancouver. Downtown Vancouver is 20-25 minutes north of Richmond. Incorporated in 1879, it is unique island city within the Fraser River delta. The population is 190,000.

In recent years Richmond experienced significant growth and change, and has transformed from a rural community to an internationally recognized city. However, it still retains a sustainable balance of urban, sub-urban and rural areas. The continuing development of the city’s downtown core, the construction of the Canada Line and the 2010 Winter Games Olympic Oval ensure that Richmond’s transformation is ongoing.

Vancouver is connected to the surrounding municipalities via an elevated rapid transit system. In August 2009, the Canada Line route to Richmond was completed, allowing passengers to commute between the two cities in 25 minutes. During the morning and evening peak hours, the train runs every 3 minutes.

Getting around Richmond – Dating back to its farming heritage, the city’s road network is oriented North-South and East-West. No 1 Road is the major western artery, as is No. 6 Road on the east which is adjacent to the Richmond Ice Centre. Highway 99 bisects Richmond and the neighbouring municipalities of Delta, ending at the US border.
