ST THOMAS THE APOSTLE NEWS

Spring Term, Issue 8 22 March 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thanks to everyone’s support we were able to put plans in place to enable a safe, sensible, and calm return for all students on Monday 8th March. It is great to have the students back – and they seem equally happy to be back also. We have all done our best to support learning through online lessons, however there is certainly no substitute than having them back in the classroom. The mass testing programme was also a success, and thankfully the first three school-based tests returned all negative results. These tests have now moved to home testing kits.

With the summer exams cancelled, teachers of Year 11 and 13 are focusing on the Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs). As soon as definite guidance has been given by the exam boards, we will discuss with the students and their parents how we plan to proceed and ensure that our students are not negatively impacted by this pandemic and get the grades they deserve.

The priority for the remaining year groups is to make up for any lost ground and it is therefore essential that the students fully engage with their learning.

The true strength of our community has been evident over the last 12 months and as we, hopefully, begin on a path towards normality again I would like to thank everyone in our community for their support. By everyone playing their part I am confident that we will emerge stronger, more resilient, and more appreciative of the small things we previously took for granted.

Best wishes,

Mr E Connolly Headteacher

SIXTH FORM NEWS

Mark Evison Project Lt Mark Evison died in 2009 from a gunshot wound while serving as a British army officer in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was attempting to get the platoon to safety following an ambush. The Mark Evison Foundation was set up in his memory, and his values and characters are a driving force within it. Mark chose to set himself many difficult challenges, always showing grit, resilience, kindness, innovation, integrity and team support. His story has inspired many Year 12 to get involved in the project the foundation supports.

I have been blown away with the interest from Year 12 for this project having 13 groups apply for this – a total of 47 students from the year group.

Year 12 have been creating and planning projects which are personally challenging. These range from camping in wild environments to walking to Cambridge and putting on a ensemble for the year group. They have to present their projects this Thursday to the organisers to see if they will get accepted onto the scheme and be awarded £500 towards their personal project. Look out for the updates on whether they are successful.

Miss K. Pearce Joint Head of 6th Form Year 12 Clive Stafford Smith Reprieve Talk

Last Wednesday, we saw a great turnout for our talk with Clive Stafford Smith OBE, a lawyer who specialises in civil rights, specifically working against the death penalty in America and the founder of Reprieve. Reprieve US is a humanitarian non-profit organisation which has helped over 550 prisoners get off of the death row.

In his talk, he highlighted the issue of generational cronyism raising the payment of Lord Drax an MP and his descendants, since his ancestor let go of his slaves, only ending in 2015 and the significant increase in tuition fees in reaching up to £9,250 per year (undergraduate) since 2012, making debt a guarantee for those unable to cover the costs of their degree without loans. This talk focused the institutional classism that limits the population as a whole and hoped to inspire us to be responsible as we begin to vote in a few years and rise into key positions, changing the world around us. One of the attendees commented about the event: “It was good that CSS told people they have a right to be angry and should be passionate about their mandate being misused.”

As you read this, I hope you will remember that the government exists for population as a whole and so that must include you.

How do you feel? Do you feel something needs to change?

SIXTH FORM NEWS

Target Year 12 have the opportunity to apply for an excellent programme to help black students gain places at Oxford and Cambridge University. It is an incredibly competitive programme for students who get the opportunity to take part in a tailored series of critical theory discussions, seminars, Oxbridge-style tutorials, visits to both and guest speaker events. Students also get advice on making the right subject choices as well as interviews practise for their application.

Two students have been successful in their application to Target Oxbridge this year:

Andre Johnson Ruben Gonzalez Rojas

We hope they continue their success into Year 13 and get the opportunity to study a degree at a top university .

Lent Reflections

Lent reflection

What does Lent mean to you? Lent is a time where we get pause and reflect upon life – how we feel about our own as well as what is going on in the world around us. It can be very easy to get caught up in the pressures of everyday life and not make space for reflection so for me, Lent is a time of the year where I try to make more space to reflect. What are you giving up/doing for Lent? I am trying to have more times of quietness and reflection. I am also trying to think about ways I can support those in need around me – for example making time to call family members who may be struggling during this time. Ms Hylton Why did you choose this? This is a unique moment in history – we are living through a global pandemic and although there are lots of positives happening right now – vaccinations and schools being able to open again, for lots of people, this has been a difficult year and lonely time. So I think it’s important to remember those people an let them know they are being thought of. Lent Reflection • What does Lent mean to you? To me lent is a way of showing appreciation to Jesus as Lent is the period of 40 days in which Christians remember the events leading up to Jesus' death. Therefore, giving things up for Lent can show appreciation to Jesus and can benefit you by also turning into a habit. • What are you giving up/doing for Lent? I gave up being" lazy". Meaning I would wake up before school time and do exercise which will help me maintain focus during the school day and keep me fit during lockdown. In addition, I kept on a decently healthy diet which would support the exercises. • Why did you choose this? I chose this because I thought that it was most relevant to me and it would benefit me the most. Timi Adeko 9:1 Furthermore, due to me watching a series called One Punch Man I decided to try the One punch man exercise challenge as I was inspired by the main character and how on the long run it would be a great success. Lent Reflection • What does Lent mean to you? For me Lent means to give something up for Christ, it's sort of like a way for me to strengthen my faith and even though it isn't comparable it helps me acknowledge that there are others out there that are lacking in things, and the things that I find normal they may regard as a luxury and have once a year or even less.

• What are you giving up/doing for Lent? I am giving up chocolate for Lent.

Tobias Enobakhare • Why did you choose this? I chose chocolate as I have a Year 12 MOP massive, sweet tooth and also as previously mentioned even though it is minor it helps me realise what I have and empathise with those less fortunate than myself.

Easter Donations

‘And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.’ (Hebrews 10:24)

Lent reminds us of the sacrifice that is to come, with Jesus giving up his life for us. With this in mind, let us be kind and bring light to others.

We are encouraging each student to contribute to an Easter gift in their tutor group from Monday 22nd March. The deadline to bring in these items will be the Thursday 25th March. We hope that each student will be able to bring in an Easter egg, or write a poem of hope/encouragement or create a piece of artwork.

Please note that students can bring in either of the three items above; they do not need to contribute all three items. These items are intended to be given as gifts for those in our local community, to bring hope to those that may have felt isolated during the pandemic and to show appreciation for people’s hard work. Therefore, we will be giving these items to the Greenhive and Queens Oak care homes which are local, and the children’s ward at Lewisham Hospital.

We thank you for your generosity in advance and wish you a blessed Easter.

Road Safety

I am writing to you to ask for your support in speaking to your child about the following issue. We have, over the last few days, had several concerns raised by parents and passers-by that students are not paying attention when crossing the road while travelling to and from school.

As I am sure you will agree, the prospect of any one of our students being seriously injured or worse due to failure to follow simple road safety rules is the last thing any of us want. So may I please request that you reinforce the message that has been shared with all our students last week and in assemblies. That is, when crossing the road, they should be sensible, aware of the traffic and cross safely obeying traffic and crossing signals.

Many thanks as always for your ongoing support in this matter.

Mr B. Tynan Assistant Headteacher

Armitage Juniors

Ten students from Year 8 have officially become “Armitage Juniors” as they have been chosen to take part in a 6 week workshop with Kings College London. The workshop will provide them with the opportunity to learn about university and medical careers, as well as gain vital knowledge and skills they will need when choosing their GCSE options in the near future. The students will be working closely with university students and will hopefully get to have their “graduation” ceremony at Kings College in June.

Prefect Application Deadline

Prefect application deadline is fast approaching. Many of the Year 10 have been working diligently on their application forms and have been showing a great maturity in seeking advice from staff and prefects. As parents, if your son is applying, could I ask that you are active in supporting and reassuring your son. The boys here take the process very seriously and would benefit from encouragement and support at home. Offer to read over your son’s application or even conduct a mock interview. Formal interviews will take place after Easter, and the senior prefect team for next year will be announced before the end of the Summer term.

Mr A. Vaughan Head of Year 10 Southwark Food and Fun Easter Holiday Programme

This year Southwark Council will be hosting the Food and Fun holiday programme during the three main school holidays: Easter, Summer and Christmas. The programme is funded by the Department for Education and builds on last summer’s very successful ‘Summer of Food and Fun’ which was run in conjunction with Lambeth. The programme aims to support local families access free, healthy food and fun activities over school holidays in 2021.

This Easter, they will be partnering with local holiday hubs across Southwark to provide an exciting programme of food and activities for children and young people in our local communities, aged between 5 and 16 years. Although this is an inclusive programme, we aim to reach as many children and young people entitled to FSM as possible.

Each programme will provide: free, nutritious and tasty food, fun physical activity sessions, a wide range of other enriching activities to suit different ages and personalities opportunities to learn more about food and nutrition for children and their families

STAC—National Apprenticeship Week 8th—12th February

As apprenticeships take on greater significance in our students future considerations I had the pleasure to organise a week of webinars. The week was extremely well attended with over 400 students accessing sessions put on by Transport for London (TFL), IBM, EY, Vodaphone, Southwark Council to name a few. It was a pleasure to host the sessions and observe the behaviour of our students as they engaged with activities and some very thoughtful and challenging questions. In the longer term I hope the students have been able to use the information they were given to help make decisions about their career pathways as well as narrow down their preferred future professions.

I produce a weekly newsletter to promote all of the careers and employability activities we run at STAC. The information provides opportunities to different talks, work experiences and appren5ticeship vacancies our partner companies are offering. I am very proud of the uptake of the events and hope that more of our students take up the chances provided for them.

MFL

Cooking enrichment sessions in target language

KS3 and KS4 students were invited to take part in a Pasta alla Carbonara Bake Off in Italian remotely. They were then invited to be involved in a Pancake Bake Off in French. Most of our participants attend- ed and made the most of the session to also prepare themselves the upcoming Pancake House Competition, that they certainly don’t want to miss out.

A special mention to Jeffers A and the twin brothers Joshua and Michael Atta F, who cooked some nice pasta for the whole family- a great way to help their parents during these tough times and whilst having fun and mastering instructions in a foreign language; as well as to Josh Moses A, for being the ideal translator that any teacher could dream of having during such a session and helping our Italian learners understand instructions given in French during the Pancake Bake Off.
