March gave us some of the diciest winter weather of the year...and some of the best skiing! I think most of us, however, are ready for sunnier skies and warmer temps. I was lucky enough to travel to the Dallas / Ft. Worth area last month and spend some time with my family there. Everything was blooming and green...it was a reminder that Spring would eventually come. I also had the pleasure of meeting with Reuben Peachey and his family, new owners of Pleasant Valley Greenhouse. I got a tour of the greenhouses and got to smell that wonderful smell of Spring...fresh dirt and moisture. Their greenhouses will be filling up this month, just in time for their Customer Appreciation Days to be held april 27 & 28...a perfect time to get your plants and flowers for spring planting. See their story on Page 34. There are a variety of other events as well, as you can see in our April Calendar of Events. The Bloodhounds return at the end of the month (see Feature Story on Page 6). There are a variety of other events and lectures to keep us busy as we wait for sunnier skies. The Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland (long one of my favorite places) is hosting several lectures this month as well as the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s April Business After Hours. A good chance to check out this wonderful facility...and stock up on some reading material as well. And remember, WHATever your pleasure this season, Enjoy! The Bloodhounds are Returning to Garrett County! The National Police Bloodhound Association is holding its annual Spring Training Seminar in McHenry, Maryland on April 28th. The six-day event which will end May 3rd, is a 40-hour Man-Trailing Law Enforcement Bloodhound Training and Certification program which is made up of eight hours of Classroom and 32 Hours of Field Training. This is the 4th consecutive year that this annual training event has been in Garrett County. The NPBA was founded in 1962 by the Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York State Police. It presently has 200 members from all over the United States. Last year, seminar hosted 69 participants from 47 different Law Enforcement Agencies from 19 states and 2 countries, including Germany. “The Dogs will be running in the streets and in the woods. The dogs are generally friendly. if they are in harness, recognize that they are working and don’t interfere. Out of harness, people may approach the handler for a closer look but as always as with any animal, ask first if they may pat or touch the dog. To the blood- hound, trailing is fun and the dog’s reaction to a subject once the bloodhound finds them, is to usually do a jump up and give the subject a big sloppy kiss!” - Lou Battistella “This year we are anticipating approximately 40 handlers with hounds and 10 instructors,” says Lou Battistella, Seminar Coordinator. Classroom and field training will begin Sunday morning, April 29th at the Garrett College Continuing Education Building. Among the 18 administration and field instructors this year, groups will be broken down into a student/instructor ratio of 4:1. Field training will consist of urban, rural, hard and forest work with trails up to 30 some hours 6 -The Lake-FrontTM - April, 2018 Continued... Last year’s group at Garrett College The groups will move from area to area throughout the week, in hopes of getting in as many training trails as possible that generally represent all the various scenarios that would be applicable to the utilzation of the man-trailing Bloodhound in law enfourcenent. The Annual Certification is based on an evaluation by a qualified instructor of the Handler and Hound from the demonstration of their ability based on the entire 40 hours. • Area's #1 Fishing & Hunting Outfitter
Dear Angler: Here in Maryland, we need only look to our State Seal — depicting the fisherman and the ploughman — for proof that fishing really is part of our heritage. It’s a fun, affordable and accessible activity for all ages, and a great excuse to get our children away from video and computer games and into the great outdoors! Approximately 700,000 adults and thousands of young people fish each year in Maryland, with an estimated annual impact of $1 billion on our economy. Gov. Martin O’Malley and Sec. John R. Griffin More than a third of our anglers visit from out of state, testimony to the value and quality of our great fishing resources. We are very fortunate to have expert biologists and managers – working to- gether with our Sport Fisheries, Tidal Fisheries and Oyster Advisory Commissions, and our Coastal Fisheries Advisory Committee, to guide fisheries management across our State. We are also very fortunate to have you -- committed conserva- tionists and advocates – working with us. Your license revenues support protection and enhancement of Maryland’s fishery resources, research and management activities, expanded public access and enhanced law enforcement. And we look forward to strengthening our partnership with you as we work toward our goals for a restored Chesapeake Bay, thriving freshwater streams, and healthy abundant fish populations. Thank you for being a part of a great cultural tradition, and here’s wishing you a terrific year of fishing in Maryland. Martin O’Malley John R. Griffin Governor Secretary About the Cover: This edition of the Maryland Fishing Guide is dedicated to Frances McFaden, who retired from public service after 43 years as a steadfast, ever-helpful, and resourceful Maryland state worker.
