Spencer Sunshine*
Journal of Social Justice, Vol. 9, 2019 (© 2019) ISSN: 2164-7100 Looking Left at Antisemitism Spencer Sunshine* The question of antisemitism inside of the Left—referred to as “left antisemitism”—is a stubborn and persistent problem. And while the Right exaggerates both its depth and scope, the Left has repeatedly refused to face the issue. It is entangled in scandals about antisemitism at an increasing rate. On the Western Left, some antisemitism manifests in the form of conspiracy theories, but there is also a hegemonic refusal to acknowledge antisemitism’s existence and presence. This, in turn, is part of a larger refusal to deal with Jewish issues in general, or to engage with the Jewish community as a real entity. Debates around left antisemitism have risen in tandem with the spread of anti-Zionism inside of the Left, especially since the Second Intifada. Anti-Zionism is not, by itself, antisemitism. One can call for the Right of Return, as well as dissolving Israel as a Jewish state, without being antisemitic. But there is a Venn diagram between anti- Zionism and antisemitism, and the overlap is both significant and has many shades of grey to it. One of the main reasons the Left can’t acknowledge problems with antisemitism is that Jews persistently trouble categories, and the Left would have to rethink many things—including how it approaches anti- imperialism, nationalism of the oppressed, anti-Zionism, identity politics, populism, conspiracy theories, and critiques of finance capital—if it was to truly struggle with the question. The Left understands that white supremacy isn’t just the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, but that it is part of the fabric of society, and there is no shortcut to unstitching it. -

Integral to this concept is the variable and highly subjective distinction made by various parties between “good” and “evil,” “right” and “wrong,” “us” and “them.” This thesis examines these concepts as they relate to the actions and manifestos of the Red Army Faction (die Rote Armee Fraktion) in 1970s Germany, and seeks to understand how its members became regarded as terrorists. -

SORIN ARHIRE, the Goga-Cuza Government and the “Jewish
SORIN ARHIRE , The GogaGoga----CuzaCuza government and the “Jewish Problem”. British perceptions AbsAbstract:tract: The government presided by Octavian Goga was officially appointed on 28 December 1937. The implementation of the promised anti-Jewish policy started already on the second day of this government. The democratic newspapers Adevărul, Dimineaţa, and Lupta, being considered Jewish, as well as all newspapers published in Yiddish and Hebrew were suspended. On 1 January 1938, although it was a national holiday, Casa Naţională de Asigurări (National Insurance House) fired all its Jewish employees, followed by the immediate publication of the list of Romanians who replaced them. These actions were in accordance with the statements of the Labor Minister, Gheorghe Cuza, son of A. C. Cuza, the one who declared that the Romanian was enjoying the right to work, and “from this point of view only those Romanians can be considered as Romanians if they had ethnic Romanian origin, Romanian soul, Romanian blood, and not the Romanian citizens”. The government Goga-Cuza exerted its rule by issuing decrees and in one of these forbade the Jews to employ Christian servants under the age of 40, considering that “the Jews using in their homes Romanian women do it in order to draw them into prostitution”. A greater influence had the 22 January decree, which stipulated that the citizenship of the Jews in Great Romania was to be revised, regardless of the length of their families’ residence in the country. From a total of 203.423 Jewish families which submitted applications for revision of citizenship, 73.253 lost it, representing 36% of the Jewish population of Romania. -

Project Deliverable Holocaust Background Text How is it possible that a man with such hateful, devastating intentions can gain as much power as Adolf Hitler did before and during World War II? It is a common belief that in order for people to follow a hateful leader, they must themselves be hateful people. However, it has been shown that that it not necessarily true and this is how Hitler was able to gain his power. In further research, it is understood that people did not necessarily agree with his anti-Semitism beliefs but rather agreed with his other beliefs and ignored his extreme anti-Semitism. [1] Despite losing a Presidential election in 1932, through this process, Hitler began to make a name for himself and gained political attention. However, it wasn't until he was appointed chancellor months later that he was able to start his rise to power. Even though Hitler freely expressed his strong distaste toward the Jews, it was his "powerful leadership, the promise of a reborn Germany, the interests of the common people, and above all, strong anti-Marxism" that made his leadership attractive to the German population. [1] In 1933, when Hitler was elected, there were only half a million Jews in all of Germany. This means that they accounted for less than one percent of the German population. Despite such a low population, the Jews heightened their visibility by high concentrations in certain cities and overrepresentation in certain businesses. "German Jews enjoyed freedom of religion and legal equality, including the right to vote. In contrast, Jews in Russia and Eastern Europe were still fleeing pogroms. -

Black Hands / Dead Section Verdict
FRINGE REPORT FRINGE REPORT www.fringereport.com Black Hands / Dead Section Verdict: Springtime for Baader-Meinhof London - MacOwan Theatre - March 05 21-24, 29-31 March 05. 19:30 (22:30) MacOwan Theatre, Logan Place, W8 6QN Box Office 020 8834 0500 LAMDA Baader-Meinhof.com Black Hands / Dead Section is violent political drama about the Baader-Meinhof Gang. It runs for 3 hours in 2 acts with a 15 minute interval. There is a cast of 30 (18M, 12F). The Baader-Meinhof Gang rose during West Germany's years of fashionable middle-class student anarchy (1968-77). Intellectuals supported their politics - the Palestinian cause, anti-US bases in Germany, anti-Vietnam War. Popularity dwindled as they moved to bank robbery, kidnap and extortion. The play covers their rise and fall. It's based on a tight matrix of facts: http://www.fringereport.com/0503blackhandsdeadsection.shtml (1 of 7)11/20/2006 9:31:37 AM FRINGE REPORT Demonstrating student Benno Ohnesorg is shot dead by police (Berlin 2 June, 1967). Andreas Baader and lover Gudrun Ensslin firebomb Frankfurt's Kaufhaus Schneider department store (1968). Ulrike Meinhof springs them from jail (1970). They form the Red Army Faction aka Baader-Meinhof Gang. Key members - Baader, Meinhof, Ensslin, Jan- Carl Raspe, Holger Meins - are jailed (1972). Meins dies by hunger strike (1974). The rest commit suicide: Meinhof (1976), Baader, Ensslin, Raspe (18 October 1977). The play's own history sounds awful. Drama school LAMDA commissioned it as a piece of new writing (two words guaranteed to chill the blood) - for 30 graduating actors. -
The American Jewish Year Book 5689
The American Jewish Year Book 5689 September 15, 1928, to October 5, 1929 Volume 30 Edited by HARRY SCHNEIDERMAN for the AMERICAN JEWISH COMMITTEE PHILADELPHIA THE JEWISH PUBLICATION SOCIETY OF AMERICA 1928 COPYRIGHT, 1928 BY THE JEWISH PUBLICATION SOCIETY OF AMERICA Printed at THE JEWISH PUBLICATION SOCIETY'S PRESS Philadelphia. Penna., U.S.A. PREFACE The leading special feature in this volume is an article by DR. H. S. LINFIELD on the Jewish population of the United States, based upon information gathered by him as director of the Statistical Department of the American Jewish Committee. DR. LINFIELD'S study shows that there are now in the United States approximately 4,130,000 Jews widely distributed throughout the country in both urban and rural places. There are Jews in all cities of the country having a population of 25,000 or over. But it is interesting to note, that Jews do not live only in the large cities, for they are also to be found in over 80% of the cities of 2,500 to 25,000 population, in over 30% of incorporated villages of less than 2,500 population and in 7% of rural unincorporated areas. In all, there are over 6,000 places throughout the country which have Jewish inhabitants. DR. LINFIELD also made a study of the Jewish congregations in the United States, as Special Agent of the United States Bureau of the Census, in connection with the Census of Religious Bodies undertaken by that Bureau. Unfortunately it was not possible for him to prepare a report on the subject in time for publication in this volume, but a pre- liminary statement, together with a table by states is given.
