BET’s ‘The New Edition Story’ Chronicles Ups and Downs of Famed 1980s R&B Group 01.24.2017 BET will premiere an original event entitled The New Edition Story, a three-part miniseries set to air over three nights consecutively, beginning Jan. 24. The miniseries stars Bryshere Y. Gray as Michael Bivins, Elijah Kelley as Ricardo Bell, Keith Powers as Ronnie DeVoe, Algee Smith as Ralph Tresvant, Luke James as Johnny Gill, La La Anthony as Flo DeVoe, Faizon Love as Maurice Starr, Woody McClain as Bobby Brown, Sandi McCree as Carole Brown, and Tyler Marcel Williams as Bobby Brown (ages 9-14). The two-minute trailer takes a longer look at the group's rise and dramatic climax, from their days rehearsing as kids in the working class Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Mass., through scoring their first big record deal and all the drama that ensues, ranging from drug addiction and misappropriated funds to ego trips and band disputes. The group helped spawn subsequent musical acts including the solo careers of Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill and Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD). The band's initial manager Maurice Starr also launched and modeled the career of fellow Boston, Mass., boy band New Kids On The Block after the group. Also, the group's 1988 song "Boys To Men" was the inspiration behind the name of the famous 1990s R&B act Boyz II Men. New Edition themselves were involved in the production, and are credited as co-producers on the miniseries, and many elements of three-part biopic were fully authorized by the group. Jesse Collins serves as executive producer of the miniseries. The New Edition Story begins Tuesday, Jan 24 at 9 p.m. ET on BET..
