Winter 2017 Newsletter WINTER 2017 NEWSLETTER 10959 W Fairview Avenue, Boise, Idaho 83713 208-376-0087 www.quiltcrossing.com Open Monday - Saturday, 10 am - 6 pm; Sundays, Noon - 5 pm $129 We are so happy to have Janet Rae Nesbitt, former co-owner of Buggy Barn Quilts in Reardan, Washington, coming to town to teach classes. As the owner of One Sister Designs, she continues to design fabrics and write books with fun and whimsical designs, featuring her signature Crazy piecing technique. Janet will be the guest speaker at Boise Basin Quilters the evening of Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 pm. Visit www.boisebasinquilters.org for more informa- tion about the meeting. Classes include lunch - yum! Piece Like Crazy: Crazy as it sounds, students can pick ANY crazy quilt from any One Sister or Buggy Barn publica- tion. That’s right - potentially, each student could be making a different quilt! In this fun class, students will learn Janet’s popular “Crazy” piecing technique (stacking fabric, cutting on the lines, shuffling, and stitching it all together). This trademark piecing method is easy and forgiving, ensuring success for sewers of all levels. The fun technique keeps you coming back for more, one quilt after another, and will keep you "piecing like crazy" long after the class is over! We will have a few kits available for purchase; please ask for details in January. Thursday, February 16, 10:30 am-5 pm Appliqué the One Sister Way: In this class, Janet will teach students how to do her needle-turn appliqué method, which includes NOT using pins! You’ll learn how to prepare the motifs for placement on the background, how to make sharp points and keep inner valleys from unraveling, as well as learning how to make bias for vines. You may choose any project from any of Janet’s books or patterns for this class. Friday, February 17, 10:30 am-5 pm Piece Like Crazy: This is the same class that we offer on Thursday. Saturday, February 18, 10:30 am-5 pm Do you want to be a Certified Embroidery Specialist? If you are new to machine embroidery or want to continue to deepen the bond with your one true love (yes, that would be your embroidery machine), this fun embroidered “Celebrate Table Runner” is the perfect option for you. In each class, we’ll cover various embroidery tech- niques and answer common questions that you’ll encounter as you complete your table runner. All machine formats are included and .svg cutwork files will be provided. Our first class is an orientation where Laura will discuss the class format, kits, bonus projects, and overall learning objectives. Sign up today and find out how your embroidery machine can transform how you think about quilting. Space is limited. Laura Reardon, 1 session every other month, $89.99 for the year Orientation Class (FREE), Saturday, February 11, 10:30 am-Noon (as space allows - if you are already registered and paid, your spot is guaranteed but please still plan to come to this session) Classes 1-5: Saturdays, March 11, May 13, July 8, September 12, & November 11, 10:30 am-Noon Companion Classes Using Your Silhouette Cameo Saturday, March 11, 1-4 pm $40 ($15 if you purchased your Cameo from us) Fun, easy, hands-on, and project based! We’ll walk through how to use your Silhouette Cameo as you discover how effortless it is to use with mate- rials like fabric and vinyl. This beginner class walks you through the whole process - no experience necessary! Kit required. Multi-Hooping Saturday, May 13, 1-4 pm $45 ($20 if you purchased your embroidery machine from us) Have you feared multi-hooping designs? Fear no more as we teach you how to mark, hoop and place the letters for your Celebrate Runner in this hands-on class. No experience necessary, all machines welcome that can accommodate a hoop (required) with an embroidery field of at least 145mm x 255mm (5.7” x 10”). Larger hoops are always welcome! Dear Friends, It’s probably safe to say that even the most intrepid among us is ready for winter to be gone! The upside of the foul weather is that most of us have been sewing like crazy - thank goodness for fabric stashes. You knew you were collecting fabrics and projects for a good reason - Snow Days! We still have a few spots left in Janet Nesbitt February classes. She’ll teach us all about her Crazy Piecing technique and how she hand appliqués all her wonderful designs. Her designs are so fun to stitch and, since you square up the blocks after they are sewn, each block is always the right size - yay! Several new Block-of-the-Month programs are beginning soon and offer a variety of techniques, from hand piecing and hand appliqué to stitching everything in an embroidery module. Styles range from funky to old-fashioned, modern to vintage - truly something for everyone. We’re excited to offer our “UFO PhD Program” (page 4) which is in- tended to motivate you to finish up Projects half Done. Not that any of us have any of those . There is a financial reward for completing the projects you’ve committed to finishing, but for most of us, the satis- faction of crossing off the item on our list is reward enough. The 2017 Treasure Shop Hop is April 20-29 this year. We’ve added a shop (Dinah’s Fabrics & Totes in Cambridge), bringing the total num- ber of participating stores to Lucky Thirteen. We’re changing up sev- eral things so be sure to plan to hop around the valley. It’s really fun, regardless of which side of the counter you stand! Mark your calendars now for Sue Spargo’s return to Boise. She’ll be here November 14-18, 2018. We won’t start taking signups until the next newsletter, but you’ll definitely want to save the date. Arriving in March, And lots more! See you soon and thanks for your continued support! The Sew & Sews at The Quilt Crossing Reserve Yours Today! • Meet the Artist: the Triplett Sisters and the Poos Collection Story
Our mission is to promote, teach, and encourage the love of ALL types of appliqué in quilting. November / December— Volume 25 - Number 6 Meet the Artist: The Triplett Sisters and the Poos Collection story ** Would you please tell us about Martha Poos and the Poos Collection and how you became in- volved with Martha and the collection? Martha Poos is our grandmother and the collection was named to honor her because she taught us to quilt. Martha is who instilled the love of the art form in Kay as a child (I took a little longer to be per- suaded.) Kay is actually the creator of the collection and she is the one who got me involved in the col- lection by asking for help with the first book Red & Green Quilts from the Poos Collection. **How many quilts are in the Poos Collection? How many Applique Albums in the collection? For several reasons, we never address how many quilts are in the collection. Just as I don't know any- one willing to count and announce how many pieces of fabric are in their stash :-) We simply say it is one of the largest privately held collections. **Where is the Poos Collection housed? The Poos Collection is housed in 2 different locations in different states. **What do you think is the reason this collection is so special? It is special because of the quality of the quilts in the collection, the amount of research available about the collection, and because of the artistic value of the quilts which are all one of a kind.
