Hello Members;

I find that I have been motivated to finish up on my sewing projects. Hopefully, that will continue. Meanwhile my cats have been keeping me company. Why do cats love so much? Be sure to read the article in the Chatter regarding the International Quilt Museum website. They are offering all the guilds a portal so you can see exhibits. FUN! Chapter Leadership meeting is on March 13 via Zoom. Be sure to sign up on the website under events. Our education continues. Penny Hulse has done a marvelous job of setting up our education lectures and workshops. We have a few in person classes - Ray Steeves in March, Terry Pyland in April, Joyce Holley in April, and Patti Pearce in May. I’m looking forward to actually seeing people in person and not via Zoom. Keep an eye out for AQG Fun Day. We are trying to plan it for the 1st week in December. We hope to have a few lectures, vendors and door prizes along with Raffle baskets. Keep on Quilting,

www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 5 Dear Aunt Quiltie,

When I first started sewing/quilting, I was building up a stash of fabric. But now years later, as I look over my bookcases full of fabric that I purchased, was given, was part of a bundle that I didn’t care for, was a color I no longer love or I am no longer in love with the print— I realize that I have ugly fabric. What can I do?

Dear Quilter, Well, as I spend hours looking at U Tube videos, I came across Karen Brown from “Just Get It Done Quilts” with a wonderful video on how to use ugly fabric. She has a number of great ideas and I added a few of mine own. 1. Make something less precious—Face masks, shoe or grocery bags. 2. Practice pieces—Use it to make sample blocks sandwich with batting pieces to practice free hand quilting or decorative stitches. 3. Hide it—Use it for a quilt backing. What about a lining for a bag? What about a dog bed for your near- by dog pound (You might want to call them first to see if there are in need or what dimensions they would like?) 4. Cut it smaller— Bonnie Hunter once said it you don’t like the fabric, you haven’t cut it small enough. Cut it into five inch strips. Still don’t like it, cut it into 2 1/2 inch strips. Still don’t like it, cut it into 2 1/2 inch squares. 5. Make an ugly quilt—Use it as a picnic table cover, use it outside, or even a dog blanket. Karen Brown made one, that when a family member goes to the hospital, it become a hospital quilt. Over the years, the ugly quilt will have a history of where it has been. Sincerely, Aunt Quiltie

AQG currently has 31 Chapters throughout the state. Of those chapters only around eight or ten have a reporter that sends in a report and photos every month of their Chapter’s activities. We would love to hear from all of you. It doesn’t take much time.

All a reporter has to do is to send in an email to [email protected] by the 12th of the month (sometimes even later) with the report and photos attached in separate files. Do not embed photos into the Word file. The chapter report should be in Word (or able to open in Word) in Calibri font at 12 font size. We don’t penalize you for spelling or not having the best photos.

Usually around the 10th of the month, we open up your emails and start saving your latest creation. After saving all of your files, we try to send a email back confirming your submittal. We would love to hear what creative work your Chapter is up to!!!! Other chapters might find ideas for there own chapter from your submittal. If you have any questions or comments, please let us know. www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 6

We’ve been busy, busy, busy since the first of the year. Our new officers have been sworn in during a recent meeting and we had a delightful time sharing our favorite new quilting tools which included a broach-like magnetic pin for parking your hand needles, a terrific magnifying glass, a standing needle threader, and a finger-mounted seam ripper that really works well. Plans are in the works for our charity sewing day via Zoom and our virtual 2-day retreat. The President’s Challenge for 2021 is Hope for the Future. We are asked to create a project that depicts hope and includes yellow with an option to add a symbol of hope. The big reveal is set for our business meeting in November. We are also in the midst of trading quilted fabric postcards with the Phoenix Modern. At a very recent meeting following a class by Diane B., we revealed our “Quilty Quotes” projects. Diane certainly knows how to keep things fun and interesting during a virtual class!

Paradise Valley Piecers of Phoenix submitted by Celeste Johnson

We meet at the Paradise Valley Senior Center on Wednesdays and have continued to meet during these trying Covid 19 times. As soon as the Center closed for inside meetings, we moved outside to the parking lot. We had lots of space as no one else was visiting the center. When the weather was cool, we met in the sun and when summer arrived, we still met just in the shadow of the building.

You can’t see all our smiling faces behind our masks but it is so wonderful to see our friends. We brought our lawn chairs and sat and stood socially distanced to show our completions to the group.

We also created a new quilted club roster made with Friendship Stars blocks.

Many quilts have been completed over the months from our Block of the Month Challenges.

Our Christmas gathering was postponed until later this year when we can safely meet again.

www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 9 Daisy Mountain Quilters of Anthem submitted by Janet Schrey

President Susan Thomas called the February 2021 meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. at the Anthem Civic Building. She welcomed 26 members and 3 guests. There were two members with February birthdays; each got to pick a Birthday Fat Quarter.

January block of the month was an Exploding Pineapple. 51 Blocks were turned in. Volunteers offered to make 9 more blocks so 2 quilts could be made from 60 total blocks. The two quilt tops would be assembled by Joy and Terri. Quilt kits were made available for members to take and make charity quilts for Veteran’s First. Also offered were kits to make Walker Bags. Janet Schrey reported that 20 quilts and 4 nursing covers were donated to Veteran’s First.

DMQ has added a Fat Quarter Bonanza drawing which we will have every month. Each month everyone who wants to participate will bring a fat quarter corresponding with that month’s birthstone. Robin Wheat won 37 Purple Fat Quarters. Jennifer Cain was our guest via Zoom and demonstrated Geometric Piecing. It was a very fun and informative demonstration. Lots of ladies shared their projects during Show and Tell.

Nimble Thimbles of Chandler submitted by Penny Boese

Nimble Thimbles watched an amazing presentation by Lyric Kinard at our Feb. 2 meeting. Lyric began her career as a traditional quilter, but has moved into art quilting, specifically working with portraits. Her presentation focused on quilt portraits, showing pieces by artists like Karol Kusmaul, Wendy Butler Berns, Dierdre Scherer and Bisa Butler, among many others. Though the artists use different means to achieve their portraits -- some wholly realistic and others using less realistic colors that still convey a portrait – Lyric noted the use of color value is key. Realistic eyes also draw the viewer to an image. In other NT news, we are exchanging homemade pin cushions! Any NT member who wants to participate can make a pin cushion, leaving it unstuffed and mailing it to Melissa Bickham by March 2 with two 3”x5” cards with your name and address on them. Melissa will mail another participant’s pin cushion to you and you will have time to stuff it, with the reveal for all the pin cushions at our March 16 meeting. If you have questions, please reach out to Melissa. In other announcements: NT is planning a virtual spring camp! Details and dates will be announced soon. NT is seeking people for upcoming board positions, including president and vice president. Pictures shown are from NT’s virtual show and tell with members Joanne Reiter, Kathy O’Brien, Stephanie McCormick, Patsy Waters, Debbie Ament and Heather Nothum sharing projects. www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 11 Nimble Thimbles continued

Kathy OBrien Heather Nothum www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 12 Busy Bees of NW Phoenix submitted by Patty Woodford, Reporter The Busy Bees held their first Business Meeting of 2021 on January 20. Betsy Schallmo, Program Chair, presented the 2021 Program Schedule to the attending members. This schedule resulted from the Planning Meeting held on January 6 and the virtual Busy Bee Board Meeting on January 14. All members were asked to be at the Planning Meeting in order to get input from the entire chapter as to all the desired activities for the year.

The Busy Bees theme for 2021 is “Stay Connected”. The Program Schedule has been designed to accommodate all members whether in attendance or from home. All those participating from home are asked to share their projects via texts, emails or telephone. In turn, Louise Grant, Chapter Chair, posts all pictures, activities, and minutes from the Business Meeting to our online Shutterfly website. To further our commitment to our theme “Stay Connected”, the board has adopted a Buddy System to keep the members unable to attend informed of the happenings, and to also check on their well being.

At the conclusion of the routine business at the meeting, Louise Grant demonstrated alternative ways to make the Snowflake Block, January’s BOM. She also presented the February BOM, Cupid’s Arrow and variations. The Busy Bee Chapter meets 2 times a month at the Westown Baptist Church, 11415 N, 35th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85029. Our Sew Days are held on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 9:00 am; and our Business Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 9:00 am. Our chapter welcomes visitors at our Business Meetings and we love new members. For more information, please visit our website at http://busybeequilters.shutterfly.com.

www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 13 Desert Threads of Sun Lakes submitted by Pat Sinclair

Members of Desert Threads are looking forward to again meeting in person. We are hoping to begin meeting together in the fall and are considering several options of where to meet. Currently there is a board meeting and a monthly meeting on Zoom and both are well attended.

After the February meeting on Zoom, break-out rooms were set up so small groups could chat and get to know each other. After the small group visits, the members Post Card returned to the main screen and continued visiting. Also at the February meeting, three members received prizes for answering Jeopardy questions in the newsletter. President Diana Jones and Program Chair Blanca Sanchez have been working hard to keep our meetings, interesting and fun, and our members involved.

We continue to sew charity quilts and look for places that need them. We’re also continuing our post card exchange in February and for Spring. In the chapter newsletter our president presented a challenge. As if this past year has not been challenging enough, I have another challenge for you. Hopefully this will be a fun challenge. I am proposing that members create a Mini Quilt, 36 X Post Card 36 (maximum size), using only your stash. You cannot purchase any fabric for the backing or binding, etc. AND you must use a technique that you have never used before.

REMEMBERING GLENNA REEVES Glenna passed away on January 18 and we will miss her commitment and willingness to help. Glenna was a founding member of the Desert Threads and Glenna Reeves her determination was crucial to the success of the new chapter of AQG, Desert Threads. She also applied for a grant and the chapter received $2,100.00 from the Greater Sun Lakes Foundation. In addition she donated our opportunity quilt kit that was completed by many loving hands. This raised almost $3,000.00 for the chapter. She always welcomed you with a smile and kind words. We will miss her.

www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 14 Delightful Quilters of Scottsdale submitted by Jane Wilcox

We Zoomed into the New Year with our January 28th meeting. 54 of our members were present. We were saddened by the news, that after years of actively participating on our Planning Board, Wanda Seale has handed in her retirement from the board, but will continue to be a very active contributor and participant to DQ. We selected our charities for 2021. They are Devereux Arizona, For the Love of Kids Ministry, Habitat for Humanity, Quilt for a Cause, The KnitWits, and Phoenix Family Advocacy Center.

Jo Kilgroe introduced this year’s Challenge quilt: “The Initial Challenge”. An overview of the challenge and specifics were included in an email. We look forward to posting pictures in May.

Our program was a video by Karen Brown and her “Just Get it Done Quilts”. The topic focused on the use of striped fabrics. It was an eye opener for many with the amazing things that can be done with stripes. The YouTube video is available – search for “Just Get it Done Quilts”. To add some fun, Pam Green did a “hot spot” give-away. The lucky winner was Hilary Ascani!

Concluding the meeting we had 25 ladies share their awesome creations. We look forward to our next meeting featuring Melissa Marginet. She will be talking about sparking creativity in our quilting and in our challenge projects. Delightful Quilters meet the last Thursday of the month. If you are interested please email [email protected].

www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 15 Strawberry Patchers of Pine, Payson, Strawberry, Happy Jack submitted by Jackie Smith Strawberry Patchers Annual Quilt Show There is finally an end in sight for the pandemic and hope for getting back to normal, or something close to it. Many Patchers have received vaccinations and are beginning to make plans for future events. However, we must regretfully announce that our annual June quilt show is canceled for the second year in a row due to the virus. It would have been our 25th year if not for Covid. As most AQG members already know, it takes months of planning and a good deal of expense to assure a successful quilt show. Moreover, success requires crowds of healthy people willing to attend, which we can’t confidently hope for as early as June 2021.

No Brainer Charitable Funding and Comfort Quilts While the Patchers are still unable to meet in person, Community Service Chair Kris Lovetro continues her efforts to raise money for Charitable Funding with masks, table runners made from orphan blocks, zipper bags and other crafty items. In addition, several members individually continue to put together Comfort Quilt kits and quilt tops for Community Service, with Kathy Hunt doing most of the longarm quilting. Quilt tops pictured here are made from kits created specifically for Community Service Comfort Quilts. Kris reports that we have already given away 12 Comfort Quilts in this young year. Being able to give tangible love and comfort to others is one of the greatest joys for all quilters throughout AQG. While we all look forward to the day we can again gather safely to “sew-cialize,” can you imagine what this quarantine would have been like without quilting?

Cactus Patchers of Tempe submitted by Annette Gelfi The Cactus Patchers (Tempe) chapter remains active with monthly online guild meetings on the second Tuesday of each month and social sewing online get-togethers on the fourth Tuesday monthly.

At the February 9th guild meeting, a fun UFO (Unfinished Objects) challenge was kicked off, wherein members who wished to participate presented three as-yet unfinished quilting projects and shared a brief story about each one. The members present voted on which one the member should aim to complete in the coming year, with the goal of sharing the completed project at the February 2022 guild meeting. If you'd like to take part, the challenge is still open to any members. All who complete their selected UFO will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card from a local quilt shop. Please contact any board member for more details.

The Show and Share segment of the meeting included some truly beautiful quilting by several members.

A couple of important board positions will soon become vacant as the members currently holding them need to step down after their years of dedicated service. The guild is in need of a Program Chair and Treasurer. If you would like more information about what is involved in these positions or to volunteer to serve please contact our chapter President Laura May. www.azquiltersguild.org March 2021—The Patchwork Chatter 17 Cactus Patchers continued

The mission of Quilt For a Cause is to organize donations and offer for sale, hand crafted quilts and quilt related products, and raise and distribute funds to organizations in Arizona that provide treatment, support services and research for breast and gynecologic cancers.

There are currently about 285 quilts in stock as part of our three-year 2022 cycle, and they are selling well during the pandemic with 112 quilts sold! There are quilts hanging in locations around Tucson: radiation treatment clinics, imaging clinics, a Pilates Studio and the Community Foundation Campus. They also sell quilt patterns, designed by local and national quilt designers, online.

If you happen to be purchasing anything from Amazon.com, we participate in the Amazon Smile program. Please select Quilt For a Cause as your charity, and they will receive a small portion of the sale from Amazon at no cost to you! The total amount of funds raised by Quilt For a Cause is greater than $1,000,000 since the first quilt auction in 2003!

The current Quilt For a Cause raffle quilt is "Forever and a Day." From deepest purples to brightest yellows, this gorgeous quilt shows the colors of a fantastical garden from morning to night. Expert applique and creative sashing make this a very special piece. Made by Jude Martin, Nancy Whitten and Marilyn Maiwald. Quilted by JoAnn Rice. Size 74" x 100".
