By: Holly Wiemers The collective equine world turns its attention to Lexington for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and its first ever appearance outside of Europe from Sept. 25 to Oct. 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park. In ways big and small, the College of Agriculture has contrib- uted to the preparations being made. Here’s how the College will be involved, and ways we need your help. Endurance race The Maine Chance Equine Campus, UK’s research and teaching horse farm in north Lexington, will host sev- eral legs of the endurance event. The race, which covers 100 total miles in one day, is expected to cross over the farm several times as horses complete loops across Central Kentucky horse farms then travel back to the Kentucky Horse Park for mandated vet checks. UK Village (volunteers needed – read more below!) UK HealthCare is the official medical provider of the Games, and with that designation, UK is considered a major partner and the Equine Initiative the official equine university program of the Games. Part of this spon- sorship includes a presence in the “UK Village,” a 3,229-square-foot tent that will be located in the trade fair area. The University of Kentucky Equine Science and Management undergraduate degree program kicked off the fall semester with its annual Welcome Back BBQ at the E.S. Good Barn on Monday, Sept. 15. More than 175 students, faculty and staff attended 6 the event and student organization Block and Bridle Club provided the food. ESMA Program Reception held Sept. 2 UK Ag Equine Programs hosted its annual Equine Science and Management Pro- gram Reception Sept. 2 at Spindletop Hall in Lexington, Ky. The event recognizes the importance of members of the equine industry who serve as intern hosts. In the past year, UK placed more than 70 internships for credit and coordinated more than 100 7 noncredit hands-on internships, volunteer, and employment opportunities. Student Professionalism Series People often tell students to enjoy college because they are the “best years of your life.” I am not sure that I agree with that statement. Some of my best years have come after college as my career started to unfold and I stopped having to eat potatoes and Mc- Donald’s just to stay within my budget. (I still eat McDonald’s by the way, only now it’s by choice as I am a firm believer that there are few things in life that a Big Mac meal 9 can’t cure.) Horseplayer gets a break, but that=s exactly what happened last week when it was revealed that NYRA was no longer accepting bets from the so- called computer-assisted wagering (CAW) players on its Empire Six wager. The Empire Six wager joined the Cross Country Pick 5 and the late Pick 5 as NYRA wagers that are no longer available to the CAW players. The computer players use algorithms that predict the probability of a particular outcome. If their programs tell them that a horse has a 50-50 chance of winning and is 3-1 they will bet accordingly. They use the same methods for most pools and bet huge amounts of money.
