Willie Hayes saw his second year end with an 11-20 record, a win over and SEC opponent for the first time in school history, his first post season win and first for A&M since the 2005-2006 season. The Bull- dogs advanced to the semifinal round of the SWAC tournament and fell 72-59 to Southern. He completed his first season as a head coach with a 7-21 overall record and a 5-13 conference mark in 2011-2012. His club advanced to the first round of the SWAC tournament and fell 75-62 to Texas Southern. He has completed 16 seasons as Vann Pettaway’s top assistant. The Bulldogs have won over 250 games since Hayes joined the Bulldog staff. One of the best point guards to ever play for A&M, Hayes thrilled Bulldog fans with his pinpoint passing and deadly shooting. He held the school record for career assists with 669 until Craig Lottie surpassed the mark in 1997, by just four.

Still, Hayes will always be known for his fantastic performances on the court. In 116 games as a player in the Bulldog program, Hayes averaged 14.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He shot 47.4 percent from the floor, 35.3 percent from three-point range and 62.2 percent from the free throw line for his career. During his senior season, Hayes averaged 24 points, seven assists, and five rebounds per outing. Total, he tallied 1,688 points in the Maroon & White.

His collegiate coach during his freshman season was Ben Jobe in 1985-86. From 1986-89 L. Vann Pettaway was Hayes mentor and leader on and off the court.

He earned All-SIAC and All-American honors in 1988 and 1989. He was a member of the SIAC All-Tournament team in 1989. Hayes was also named SIAC Player of the Year in 1989. During that year, Hayes was named A&M Male Athlete of the Year. He was the 1989 Mayor’s Cup Classic MVP and he was a member of the 1989 Extra Point Club All-American Team. For his efforts and accomplishments on the floor, Hayes was inducted into the Alabama A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

Hayes played his high school ball for coach Willie Ford at Abrams High. After his adventures at A&M, Hayes signed as free agent with the New Jersey Nets of the NBA. He participated as a member of the Nets summer league team. He was drafted in 1989 by Sioux Falls of the Continental Basketball League. From that point Hayes continued his relationship with basketball working the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament from 1990- 1995 with CBS and Fox Sports.

Then before the 1995-96 season was set to begin, Hayes former coach called him to ask if he was interested in a position that was open on the Bulldog coaching staff. Now after 16 years assisting the longest tenured leader in A&M men’s basketball history the student becomes the teacher with Hayes be- ing named the next head coach of the Maroon & White.

Hayes is a member of the National Association Basketball Coaches and also a member of the NABC Assistant Coaches board representing the SWAC.

Born in Bessemer, Ala., on July 12, 1967, Hayes is the youngest of Queen E. Hayes’ 11 children, including nine sons.

He received his degree in physical education from Alabama A&M in 1990. Hayes and his wife Preanza have two children, daughter, Aamirah, and a step- daughter, Chrystal.

Former head coach Vann Pettaway

“I believe that Willie is a perfect fit for Alabama A&M basketball. He fits all the intangibles, he’s a competitor, a communinator, and he is an A&M alum. I know he will be successful without a doubt.”

Bulldogs fall in Missouri Blazers outmuscle Bulldogs 69-57

SPRINGFIELD – If this was a baseball game then you could say they played small ball in the first WHY UAB WON: UAB didn't shoot well, but outrebounded Alabama A&M 51-37 half with a score like 26-21. But it was basketball and A&M came out and made the Bears of Mis- souri State play a half-court game and right into their hands taking a 68-47 victory. and got to the line (17-of-22) more than the Bulldogs (7-of-11). The Blazers had a key stretch in the first half of about seven minutes where it turned a close game into Both teams shot under 30 percent as in the first as A&M went seven of 27 for 26% and MSU was 8 of a 15-point lead. 32 for 25%. The game began at a slow pace with the home team holding double digit leads twice but the visiting Bulldogs close in on both occasions. WHY AAMU LOSS: A&M did not hist their shots like they needed to in the first

Missouri State opened the scoring with a jumper by Emmanuel Addo. From there MSU held the half and gave up to many offensive rebounds (23). lead and was able to maintain the advantage. The Maroon & White would continue to fight but two of 11 from the three-point line would be the Achilles heel that saw Alabama A&M down by five at KEY MOMENT: Alabama A&M cut the lead to 57-50 and it looked like AAMU's half-time. Demarquelle Tabb swatted a Jordan Swing shot with 4:15 left, but Ted Valentine called a foul. Swing hit two free throws. Rob Williams hit two free throws at 3:31 The second half would not get any better for the visiting team as they went over four minutes at one point without a basket. While A&M was trying to hit a shot Missouri State found their niche and and AAMU turned it over on an offensive foul on the next possession. Tabb fouled connected on 50 percent from the field and took advantage of the 26 to 17 fouls in favor of the Bears. out at the 3:02 mark. UAB did go on a 17-3 run early in the game to turn an 9-8 lead into a 26-11 lead and maintained around a 10-point lead for most of the game. The second straight week of seven days between games would finally catch up with the Bulldogs as they were not in rhythm as for the first time this year no A&M player scored in double figures. TOP UAB PLAYER: C.J. Washington led UAB with 19 points and six rebounds.
