Yes, are well understood by the faithful and were visible in indeed. The humanity assumed by the Son of God in the this world, the mystery of Holy Saturday is obscure to Annunciation in the womb of the Blessed Virgin is forever the faithful today, and was itself invisible to our world His. The hypostatic union was not disrupted by death. -

Marginalia, October 2010 28 Holy Shit: Bosch’s Bluebird and the Junction of the Scatological and the Eschatological in Late Medieval Art Marisa Mandabach Harvard University* In the ‗Hell‘ panel of the Garden of Earthly Delights (ca. 1500), a devil with the head of a bird and a humanoid body with glowing blue skin devours one naked soul and drops two more, in a transparent blue bubble, into a cesspool (Figure 1). Its black eye conveys no hint of consciousness; glinting with two white highlights, it is all surface and all abyss. Another victim follows him headfirst. Their tormentor is an eating and defecating machine. Moreover, the half-eaten victim in its raised claw has been infected with the latter of these modes, releasing (no doubt in terror, as in a literal ‗fight or flight‘ response) a smoky cloud of black- birds from his or her anus. -

98 3 The riddles of the Franks Casket: Enigmas, agency and assemblage Since its recovery from Auzon, France, in 1859 by English anti- quary Sir Augustus Franks, the whalebone chest known as the Franks or Auzon Casket has been a ‘fascinating enigma’ to those who have studied it and among the most ‘intriguing and irritat- ing’ of Anglo- Saxon artefacts to have survived.1 Now held in the British Museum, it has been dated to the early eighth century and is likely to be of Northumbrian craftsmanship, though more exact details of its original context are unknown. The casket has tra- ditionally been assigned to a highly learned milieu and to a syn- cretistic era, as its imagery draws on diverse sources, including Germanic and Roman legends, as well as Jewish and Christian stories. The images work in tandem with texts that are mostly dis- played in Anglo- Saxon runes and written in the Old English lan- guage, but which also make use of Latin and the Roman alphabet. Not only do these inscriptions shift between different types of let- tering and languages; they also run backwards, read upside down and even use cryptic runes. The verbal play represented by these complex inscriptions is reinforced by the visual riddles of the casket. The rectangular, lidded box features intricate yet deeply puzzling carvings on each of its five panels. The lid appears to show the archer Egil from Germanic legend defending a fortress from attack. The back panel, meanwhile, shows the Romans, led by Titus, sacking Jerusalem. The left end panel presents us with the Roman legend of Romulus and Remus, while the right end panel displays an unidenti- fied Germanic legend. -

How can we unravel the apparent incongruity between God’s loving character and the existence of hell? Christian Reflection Prayer† A Series in Faith and Ethics For neither death nor life, nor angels, nor princes, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to sepa- rate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 3:13—4:6 Focus Article: Reflection The Gates of Hell Shall One of the church’s most ancient claims is that God’s love, Not Prevail expressed in the death of Jesus Christ, conquers hell itself. Jewitt, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2014 Landscape painting assumed a new prominence in Venetian painting between the late fifteenth to early sixteenth century: this study aims to understand why and how this happened. It begins by redefining the conception of landscape in Renaissance Italy and then examines several ambitious easel paintings produced by major Venetian painters, beginning with Giovanni Bellini’s (c.1431- 36-1516) St. Francis in the Desert (c.1475), that give landscape a far more significant role than previously seen in comparable commissions by their peers, or even in their own work. After an introductory chapter reconsidering all previous hypotheses regarding Venetian painters’ reputations as accomplished landscape painters, it is divided into four chronologically arranged case study chapters. -

Another leviathan stalks the waters of Thomas Lodge and Robert Greene’s biblical drama A Looking Glass for London and England (c. 1589).[2] Along with George Peele’s David and Bethsabe (c. 1593-4), A Looking Glass constitutes one of the final attempts to revive the tradition of biblical drama in England. The play dramatises the Prophet Jonah’s struggle to encourage the inhabitants of Nineveh to repent their sins. Half way through the play a hell mouth stage property is used to represent a whale when the Prophet Jonah is swallowed by ‘[t]he proud Leviathan that scours the seas’ and then ‘cast out of the [w]hales belly upon the Stage’ (LG. -

'He Descended into Hell': Creed, Article and Scripture Part 1 JOHN YATES 1. Introduction The 'descent into hell' is an expression of Christian truth to which members of the Anglican Communion are immediately committed in three places: The Apostles' Creed, The Athanasian Creed and Article 3. 1 Despite this it is probably true that of all the credal statements (at least of those in The Apostles' Creed) it is the one which is the most poorly understood. One major aim of this article is to remedy this deficiency in a public forum, and to do so in a manner which self-consciously remains faithful to the classical Anglican emphasis on the essential interrelatedness of scripture, tradition and reason in all matters of theological endeavour. To adopt such an approach is to deny both that appeal to tradition alone can be determinative for doctrine (as in Roman Catholicism), or, that one must necessarily be able to point directly to passages of scripture to authenticate a theological position (as in the claims of various forms of modern Fundamentalism). Article 8 puts the matter at hand clearly. 'The Three Creeds, Nicene Creed, Athanasius's Creed, and that which is commonly called the Apostles' Creed, ought thoroughly to be received and believed: for they may be proved by most certain warrants of Holy Scripture'. This Article does not claim that the form of a credal statement must be scriptural, but rather that because the content of the specifically named creeds are biblical they are to be accepted. 2 The authority of the creeds in matters of faith and conduct rests upon their background in the Bible, and never vice-versa. -

Cole A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the School of English in the University of St Andrews 17 December 2013 i ABSTRACT My thesis, ‘Fairy in Middle English romance’, aims to contribute to the recent resurgence of interest in the literary medieval supernatural by studying the concept of ‘fairy’ as it is presented in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English romances. This thesis is particularly interested in how the use of ‘fairy’ in Middle English romances serves as an arena in which to play out ‘thought-experiments’ that test anxieties about faith, gender, power, and death. My first chapter considers the concept of fairy in its medieval Christian context by using the romance Melusine as a case study to examine fairies alongside medieval theological explorations of the nature of demons. I then examine the power dynamic of fairy/human relationships and the extent to which having one partner be a fairy affects these explorations of medieval attitudes toward gender relations and hierarchy. The third chapter investigates ‘fairy-like’ women enchantresses in romance and the extent to which fairy is ‘performed’ in romance. -

Introduction The aim of this work is to consider to what extent, if any, the English poet John Milton may have been influenced by the medieval English poem known Genesis B in composing Paradise Lost with particular attention to the characterisation of Satan. The study will explore the similarities and differences in the depiction of Satan in both poems and will begin with the premise that this topic is extremely problematic. -
