The Mouth of Hell with Tormented Souls (detail fig. 2), MS M.945, f.168v iv Introduction Since its beginning the admonition of Christianity to humanity has been a call for a pressing concern for the eternal destination of the human soul. Ever increasingly during the late Middle Ages this imperative was being answered by the faithful in the form of purposeful personal devotion characterized by regularized daily meditations. In the northern Lowlands the writings of the Devotio Moderna stressed the importance of developing a profound interiority by reflecting on biblical subjects.1 As the most popular book of the Middle Ages, books of hours were essential in effecting this program of prayer and contemplation for the cultivation of the interior spiritual life of the faithful and assisting them in the consideration of last things. Time spent with these books facilitated the devout in following the Biblical exhortation to “make an end of your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12).2 The miniatures and borders adorning the folios of the Hours of Catherine of Cleves (MSS M.917/945) in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York have long been widely accepted as the most imaginative and beautiful of any book of hours produced in the Netherlands up until their creation by their unknown master in 1440.3 Befitting their setting, the Hellmouths of Catherine’s book are innovative in their conception and fantastic in their execution of the “third last thing”. The triple Hellmouth in the Office of the Dead presents a horrific scene of human souls suffering the torture of devils as punishment for their earthly sins (Figure 1). MS M.917 is paginated while MS M.945 is foliated. 1 Smaller and less graphic in detail but arguably no less ghastly, are the three images of the Hell (Purgatory) mouth with souls writhing amidst the flames of its fiery interior in the Monday Hours of the Dead (Figure 2). Disturbing as they are, these miniatures assisted the meditative viewer in obtaining the necessary ingredient—fear—for creating what the Devotio Moderna writer, Gerard Zerbolt of Zutphen, called an elixir of “remorse arising from fear”.4 Gerard asserted that meditating on fear would produce hope; hope ultimately leading to redemption. This paper will demonstrate that Catherine’s book of hours was more than a mere devotional aid filled with prayers and pretty pictures, but rather an effective tool of meditative contemplation—one that engendered deep emotional connections with which she negotiated the path of her soul’s redemption. While my primary focus will be directed towards the miniatures of the Hellmouths, consideration will be given to various aspects of books of hours in general, such as their status as beloved objects and their devotional use, and Catherine’s more specifically. I will also attend to the various formal and iconographic elements of its borders and miniatures to highlight their innovative quality. This examination will show how parchment, images, and text became a sort of virtual portal of access to another realm. From the comfort and safety of her temporal world Catherine could visually anchor herself in the liminal space of the borders of her book of hours, peer into its “windows” (miniatures) to the world of the spiritual, and engage in a contemplative and sober self-examination of “last things”.

    98 3 The riddles of the Franks Casket: Enigmas, agency and assemblage Since its recovery from Auzon, France, in 1859 by English anti- quary Sir Augustus Franks, the whalebone chest known as the Franks or Auzon Casket has been a ‘fascinating enigma’ to those who have studied it and among the most ‘intriguing and irritat- ing’ of Anglo- Saxon artefacts to have survived.1 Now held in the British Museum, it has been dated to the early eighth century and is likely to be of Northumbrian craftsmanship, though more exact details of its original context are unknown. The casket has tra- ditionally been assigned to a highly learned milieu and to a syn- cretistic era, as its imagery draws on diverse sources, including Germanic and Roman legends, as well as Jewish and Christian stories. The images work in tandem with texts that are mostly dis- played in Anglo- Saxon runes and written in the Old English lan- guage, but which also make use of Latin and the Roman alphabet. Not only do these inscriptions shift between different types of let- tering and languages; they also run backwards, read upside down and even use cryptic runes. The verbal play represented by these complex inscriptions is reinforced by the visual riddles of the casket. The rectangular, lidded box features intricate yet deeply puzzling carvings on each of its five panels. The lid appears to show the archer Egil from Germanic legend defending a fortress from attack. The back panel, meanwhile, shows the Romans, led by Titus, sacking Jerusalem. The left end panel presents us with the Roman legend of Romulus and Remus, while the right end panel displays an unidenti- fied Germanic legend.

Another leviathan stalks the waters of Thomas Lodge and Robert Greene’s biblical drama A Looking Glass for London and England (c. 1589).[2] Along with George Peele’s David and Bethsabe (c. 1593-4), A Looking Glass constitutes one of the final attempts to revive the tradition of biblical drama in England. The play dramatises the Prophet Jonah’s struggle to encourage the inhabitants of Nineveh to repent their sins.     'He Descended into Hell': Creed, Article and Scripture Part 1 JOHN YATES 1. Introduction The 'descent into hell' is an expression of Christian truth to which members of the Anglican Communion are immediately committed in three places: The Apostles' Creed, The Athanasian Creed and Article 3. 1 Despite this it is probably true that of all the credal statements (at least of those in The Apostles' Creed) it is the one which is the most poorly understood. One major aim of this article is to remedy this deficiency in a public forum, and to do so in a manner which self-consciously remains faithful to the classical Anglican emphasis on the essential interrelatedness of scripture, tradition and reason in all matters of theological endeavour. To adopt such an approach is to deny both that appeal to tradition alone can be determinative for doctrine (as in Roman Catholicism), or, that one must necessarily be able to point directly to passages of scripture to authenticate a theological position (as in the claims of various forms of modern Fundamentalism). Article 8 puts the matter at hand clearly. 'The Three Creeds, Nicene Creed, Athanasius's Creed, and that which is commonly called the Apostles' Creed, ought thoroughly to be received and believed: for they may be proved by most certain warrants of Holy Scripture'. Cole A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the School of English in the University of St Andrews 17 December 2013 i ABSTRACT My thesis, ‘Fairy in Middle English romance’, aims to contribute to the recent resurgence of interest in the literary medieval supernatural by studying the concept of ‘fairy’ as it is presented in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English romances. This thesis is particularly interested in how the use of ‘fairy’ in Middle English romances serves as an arena in which to play out ‘thought-experiments’ that test anxieties about faith, gender, power, and death. My first chapter considers the concept of fairy in its medieval Christian context by using the romance Melusine as a case study to examine fairies alongside medieval theological explorations of the nature of demons. I then examine the power dynamic of fairy/human relationships and the extent to which having one partner be a fairy affects these explorations of medieval attitudes toward gender relations and hierarchy. The third chapter investigates ‘fairy-like’ women enchantresses in romance and the extent to which fairy is ‘performed’ in romance.
