Is a small fertile township on the southern bank of the R~bbl~ three miles S, from Preston, containing 684 acres, and the population m 1801 was 106 ; 1821, 166 ; 1831, 159 ; 1841, 170 ; 1851, 80 ; 1861, 56 ; 1871, 60; 1881, 58; 1891, 60; and 1901, 51 ; 1911, 58. Rateable value, £1,092 5s. Od. It forms a portion of the parish of Samlesbury, and is ~n the parliamentary divi~ion of Darwen. Cuerden Hall was erected m 1700 by. \Villiam Assheton, Esq., whose descendant, Ralph Ass~eton, Esq., is the present proprietor; but the house has not been occupied ~y the family for many year~. In 1840 as workmen were engaged m digging the earth to replace the ~oil which had been wasJ:ed away from behind a wall erected to protect the mansion from the mundatwns of the Ribble, a leaden chest was discovered, containing 10,000 pieces of silver ingots of various sizes, silver armlets, &c., amounting ~o more than 1 000 ozs., exclusive of 8,000 coins, chiefly Anglo-Saxon pieces, of the vaiue of 2d. each. The treasure was supposed to have been deposi ted about the year 910 and the ornaments such as were worn in the time of Alfred the Great. They were adjudged as treasure trove to the Queen.
